LOGINThe property I wanted was right outside the city. It was far enough from the crowds, but close enough that I would be able to access more supplies just in case something went wrong.
But far more importantly, the property was completely surrounded on all sides by a river. It was, in short, a small island.
The only way to get there was via a boat. That meant the base would be easily defensible.
In my previous life, Harris had told me about the place, and how much he hated buying the property because it was so far from the city.
But I knew it was about to become one of the safest settlements in just a week, because not once had I met a zombie who was able to swim, they were far too aggressive for waddling through water.
Besides, the land around the house was large enough for farming. It had a deep well for freshwater, and even a barn filled with some farm animals.
I had no idea why Harris had put in those things for a vacation home, but I was very happy that they were there.
It had everything I needed. The only problem though, was that Harris was not desperate for money. He was a lonely, billionaire bachelor. My only hope was that he would be willing to sell the property to me as quickly as possible.
I just needed to convince him to sell it to me.
Throughout my drive to his home, my phone kept ringing and buzzing. Both Ethan and Sarah had left me more messages than I could count.
Finally, after half an hour of driving, and a couple of minutes at the guard gate lying that I had an appointment, I pulled up outside his house and looked down at my watch. It was not yet nine am, and that meant it was a little bit earlier than I would have liked.
I took a deep breath, got out of my car, walked towards his front door and rang the bell.
I waited a couple of seconds, nothing.
So, I rang again.
This time, I finally heard his approaching footsteps.
The door opened, and suddenly, Harris was right in front of me.
He was shirtless, and his blonde hair was messy, as though I had dragged him out of bed. His eyebrows shot up the moment he saw me,
"Kara?" he gasped, smiling warmly as he leaned against his door frame, “This is such a pleasant surprise. How are you?”
“I’m fine,” I answered, flashing him a smile, “Good morning,”
"Did something happen?” he asked, a note of concern slipping into his tone, “What are you doing here this early?"
I lifted my head up just to meet his incredibly high gaze, "I want to buy your house."
He blinked, clearly shocked, "What?"
"The property you just put up for sale," I answered, “I want to buy it.”
His expression was still confused, "You came here at this hour to tell me you want to buy my house?"
"Yes," I answered while keeping my tone as firm as possible.
Harris just stared at me with a little bit of shock in his eyes. He even glanced around, as though checking if this was a prank. Finally, he looked back at me, "Kara, are you serious?"
"Yes, I am,” I answered,
His eyes narrowed. "You already have one, why do you need a summer home?”
"Because I want it." I shrugged,
He actually laughed. "You know how much that place costs, right?"
"Tell me," I answered, still keeping my tone firm.
He stared at me for a couple more seconds before letting out a sigh, “You really are serious, aren’t you?”
"Very." I nodded.
He shrugged, pushed open his door wider and took a step to the side. "Well, come in then. Let’s talk.”
I flashed him a smile and walked in.
By the time I walked to his living room, Harris had grabbed a shirt from somewhere and pulled it on.
I sighed for a moment, it was nice looking at those chiseled abs. I quickly shook my head, I did not have time to care about his muscles, my mind was already spinning, thinking of exactly the things I needed to get when I got the lottery money.
I was definitely going to reinforce the wall, and set up a self-sustaining solar system. Then, I was going to stock up the house.
Seven days wasn't much, and I needed to make sure I was spending every day before the apocalypse as productively as I could.
It took a couple of minutes before Harris returned to the living room.
"You've worked for me long enough to know that's not a property I planned on giving away for free," he said as he walked up to me.
"I'm not asking you to give it away." I answered,
He crossed his arms. "I still don’t understand. Even if you have the money, I know you, Kara, you don't even like taking vacations on beaches. Why would you want the house?”
I paused for a moment and debated telling him the truth.
I knew I needed allies, and while I couldn’t quite say I trusted Harris, I knew he was honest, and that was a quality I needed in an ally.
Eventually, I decided that there was too much risk, at least, not until I had gotten enough power to protect myself.
"I need a break," I answered, spinning the truth in a way I never thought I could before. “I caught Ethan cheating, and I am divorcing him. So, right now, I need a break from everything, including work.”
His expression immediately changed. "What?" he gasped, “I’m so sorry, Kara, that must-”
“It’s okay,” I said, shaking my head, “I’m over it.”
Harris stared at me with concern in his eyes for a couple more seconds before nodding. I let out a sigh of relief when I realized that he was dropping the questions.
"The house is listed for two million." he finally whispered,
He paused for a moment and searched my reaction. When he noticed I wasn’t flinching, he let out a sigh, and continued, "But if you're actually serious, I can let you have it for one point five."
"Deal." I answered so fast, his mouth fell open.
"You didn't even think about it?" he asked,
"I already thought about it before I came here," I answered, “I need a home. How soon can I move in? I would need to get the keys tomorrow, because I want to do some renovations?”
Harris just kept silent. He stared at me in shock for a while before shaking his head, "Kara,” he gasped, “That’s one and a half million dollars.”
"I know," I answered, “And I can send you the full amount tomorrow,”
His eyebrows rose again. "Tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow." I nodded,
Harris was silent for a couple of seconds before nodding. "Fine. I'll call my lawyer later today and have him start preparing everything. I assume you need it as fast as possible?”
“I do,” I answered, “Thank you so much.”
“Well, now that you are here, at least have some coffee.”
I hesitated for a moment, I really didn’t have time. I needed to start shopping, and I needed to buy the lottery tickets before twelve pm. There were still a couple of hours, but I didn’t want to leave any room for error.
But eventually, I took a deep breath and nodded, “Okay,” I said, smiling, “I’ll have a coffee.”
He smiled and led me right to his kitchen, where he poured me a cup of already boiling coffee, before turning around and preparing another cup for himself.
I mumbled thanks as I began to reach for my cup. But just before I could reach for it, my phone buzzed, and my elbow hit the cup. It immediately tipped over the edge of the table.
My eyes widened as I watched the glass begin to fall.
"No—" I gasped, and reached out for it, trying to catch it before it fell.
And to my shocked eyes, the glass stopped midair.
It froze, and for the next second, my brain refused to process what I was seeing and feeling.
Somehow, there was a feeling in my mind that I had never felt before, and that feeling was growing hotter.
The wine inside it remained perfectly still. I watched, shocked and transfixed, as I shifted my outstretched hand, and the glass followed after.
The floating glass.
My heart began to slam hard against my ribs. I slowly lowered my hand, and the glass still kept on floating.
"What the…" I whispered. My mind immediately went to the day of apocalypse. I had heard of people awakening abilities, but I had always thought it was a myth. That was until the moment Ethan had burned me with fire.
But even then, even if I had an ability, wasn’t it supposed to come on the day the apocalypse started?
Why now?
I didn't know how I was doing this, or even why. I thought of one word. Come. And the glass shot towards my now outstretched hands, where I quickly caught it.
I stared at my hand for a moment, as my mind brought out a word.
Telekinesis.
I had freaking telekinesis.
"Is something wrong?" Harris' voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

I spent the next few minutes completely confused. No matter how hard I tried, I still was not able to figure out just how I had managed to be reborn just before the apocalypse. There had been no warming, no strange voice coming to tell me I had gotten another chance, nothing. One moment, I was burning alive on the floor with Ethan standing over me. The next, I was seven days before the apocalypse, awake and fine.I spent the next few minutes looking right at the date on my phone. I checked it so many times, just to be sure that I was not hallucinating. I checked the news, the time, and even my bank account.Everything was exactly as I remembered it. The world around me was still normal, the dead still stayed dead, and people were not going around with fucking superpowers.I spent the next few minutes googling for any reports of unprovoked attacks around the world, and no matter what I checked, I found nothing. No matter how hard I tried, or how many websites I read through, I found no
My brows furrowed as I looked down at the plates, both of them contained crumbs, as though two people were just done eating. My gaze moved around the room and that was when I noticed that something else had changed. There was a second backpack, a smaller one, at the side of the wall. And it wasn’t Ethan's.My heart sank, I stood up and immediately called out, “Who’s there?” `Ethan stopped drinking. My hand instinctively moved toward the knife tucked inside my waistband.“If you don’t come out now,” I started to shout, “I am going to start shooting. I am not bluffing, I have a gun.” I lied through gritted teeth. The moment those words left my lips, the bathroom door opened and Sarah – my best friend — walked out.My blood went cold, and it wasn’t because of her presence. No, it was because she was holding the hand of a young boy.Years ago, Sarah had gotten pregnant, and she had refused to ever tell me who the father was. I had not bothered to focus on it ever since then, not until th
Run, Kara, Run.My lungs burned, my chest ached, and my body cried out in pain as I sprinted down the mangled, broken and completely ruined street. No matter how scared I was, or how much pain I was in, I made sure to keep one hand tightly wrapped around the strap of my backpack, while also using the other hand to grip the small plastic bag of food that I had managed to scavenge.Behind me, I heard something snarl. I didn’t look back, I didn’t need to, not when I already knew what it was; a zombie."Come on, Kara,” I hissed under my breath, trying to push past all the pain I was feeling, “Come on!”My boots slammed hard against broken pavement as I ran past the now familiar stretch of road. A car blocked the path I was on, I jumped and veered around the car, and almost slipped when my feet landed on a pool of blood.I paused for a moment, using the time to catch my breath. This blood wasn’t here yesterday, right? Who?The zombie slammed into the vehicle behind me and the sound of the
