Chapter 4: The Oath Shattered

last update publish date: 2026-10-06 23:14:57

POV: Lyra Mooncrest

Alaric stood on the high stone platform with Thalia clinging to his arm, waiting for me to walk up and beg for his forgiveness.

The Great Assembly Hall was silent. Hundreds of pack members lined the wide stone floor, their eyes moving back and forth between Alaric on the high platform and me standing at the back doors. The air in the room felt tight, heavy with confusion and rising anger.

Alaric didn't wait for me to take another step. He rested his hands on the carved wooden railing, leaning forward so his loud, commanding voice echoed off every high stone wall.

"Members of Sun Valley!" Alaric shouted, his tone harsh, ruthless, and absolute. "We gather here today because an officer of this pack has chosen open defiance over duty. Lyra Mooncrest, head of logistics, has refused direct orders from her Alpha. She has hoarded critical storage keys, refused to maintain our living quarters, and shown complete disrespect to the leadership that keeps this village safe!"

Gasps rippled through the crowd. People began whispering behind their hands, turning to look at me with shocked expressions.

"Is that true?" a woman near the front asked in a hushed voice. "Lyra refused to do her job?"

"She has managed our food and shelter for years," an older man replied, shaking his head. "Why would she suddenly stop?"

Thalia stepped forward, resting her small hand gently on Alaric’s upper arm. She was wearing a delicate white dress that looked far too thin for the chilly autumn air. She let out a soft, trembling sigh, her eyes wide and watery as she looked down at the crowd.

"Please, Alaric, don't be too hard on her," Thalia said, her voice soft and full of sorrow, carrying clearly across the quiet room. "I know Lyra is upset with me. She thinks I am taking up too much of your time. She even refused to let the workers fix the heating pipes for my birthday gathering today. I told her I didn't mind being cold, but she was so angry..."

She lowered her head, wiping a fake tear from her cheek with the edge of her sleeve.

The crowd reacted immediately.

"How could Lyra be so petty?" a guard’s wife murmured loudly. "Thalia has a weak chest! Everyone knows she gets sick in the cold!"

"To deny heat to a sick girl just out of jealousy? That's terrible," another voice added from the middle row.

Alaric placed a protective arm around Thalia's shoulders, glaring down at me with cold triumph in his eyes. He thought he had set the perfect stage. He had turned the pack against me before I even had a chance to open my mouth.

"Lyra Mooncrest!" Alaric’s voice boomed across the hall, slicing through the whispers. "Walk down to the center circle right now, hand over the master keys to the logistics vault, and apologize publicly to Thalia for your insubordination. Do it now, or I will strip you of your rank and place you in the holding cells for three days!"

I looked at him. I looked at Thalia clinging to his coat, looking like a helpless victim.

For six long years, I would have panicked at those words. I would have run down that aisle with my heart in my throat, desperate to explain myself, desperate to make Alaric see that I was good, loyal, and worthy of his love.

Now, looking at them from across the stone floor, I felt nothing. No hurt. No anger. Just a sharp, clean silence inside my mind.

I didn't run. I didn't cry.

I took a step forward. My boots hit the stone floor with a steady, unhurried rhythm.

Step. Step. Step.

The pack members parted to give me a wide path. Their whispers slowly died down as they saw the expression on my face. There was no fear in my eyes. There was no shame in my posture. My chin was lifted high, my shoulders straight, my Mother's silver teardrop pendant resting quietly against my collarbone.

Alaric frowned, his brow pulling together as I approached. He expected me to stumble. He expected me to look at the ground.

Instead, I walked straight into the smooth, white stone circle carved into the middle of the assembly floor—the ancient binding circle used only for high council trials, legal oaths, and pack bonds.

I stopped right in the center.

"Alaric," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but in the total silence of the hall, every single person heard it clearly.

"You will address me as Alpha Alaric!" he barked, stepping closer to the edge of the platform. "And you will bow your head when you stand in the binding circle!"

"I will not," I replied calmly.

Thalia gasped softly, putting her hand over her mouth. "Lyra, please... just hand over the keys and say you're sorry. Alaric will forgive you if you just apologize!"

I didn't even turn my head to look at her. Thalia was nothing. A shadow in a story that had already ended for me.

I raised my right hand into the air, palm facing open toward the high ceiling.

Alaric’s eyes widened slightly. "What are you doing?"

"You called me here to punish me for insubordination," I said, my voice echoing off the stone walls like a ringing bell. "You stand up there with your arm around another woman, calling me petty, calling me selfish, while I have spent every waking hour of the last six years keeping this pack fed, clothed, and alive."

"That is your duty as my promised mate!" Alaric shouted, his jaw tight with growing annoyance. "You owe your service to this pack, and you owe your loyalty to me!"

"I owed you my loyalty because of our mate bond," I said, looking straight into his eyes. "A bond built on mutual respect, honor, and protection. But you severed that bond the moment you traded my hard work for your own pride."

"Stop talking nonsense!" Alaric snapped, taking a quick step down the wooden stairs toward the floor. "Hand over the logistics keys right now!"

"Elder Garrick!" I called out, turning my head toward the council table on the left side of the room. "Under Section Four of the Ancient Pack Charter, does a female wolf have the absolute legal right to sever a mate bond if she declares it before the full assembly?"

The entire room went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop on the stone floor.

Elder Garrick stood up slowly from his seat at the high council table. He adjusted his glasses, his stern face grim and unreadable. He looked at Alaric, then looked down at me standing in the white circle.

"She does," Garrick announced, his loud, deep voice carrying across the entire hall. "The protocol of rejection is ancient and immutable. If both parties have reached the age of adulthood, any wolf may reject a mate bond in the binding circle. No Alpha has the authority to stop it."

Alaric froze on the bottom stair. His face flushed a dark, angry red. "Lyra, do not do this! If you break our bond over a childish argument about storage keys, I will make sure you have nothing in this pack! You will be a nobody!"

"I was already a nobody to you, Alaric," I said softly, my voice filled with a deep, quiet sadness that made several older pack members in the crowd wince. "You just didn't realize I was watching."

I took a deep breath. I closed my eyes for one second, feeling the warm thread of the soul bond sitting deep inside my chest—the golden, invisible chain that had tied my spirit to his since we were eighteen years old.

I reached inside my soul and grabbed that chain.

I opened my eyes, looking directly into Alaric's shocked face.

"I, Lyra Mooncrest," I spoke, every single word crisp, loud, and crystal clear, "hereby reject you, Alaric, as my mate and my future Alpha. I sever the bond between our souls. I break the oath of protection, and I reclaim my life as my own."

A sharp, brilliant flare of white light burst from the center of the binding circle. It flared out like a sudden spark, blinding the front rows for a split second before vanishing into the air.

"AAAAGH!"

Alaric suddenly doubled over, clutching his chest with both hands. A loud, agonizing scream tore out of his throat as he dropped hard onto his knees on the stone floor. His breath came out in violent, ragged gasps, his entire body trembling as the spiritual connection between us was forcefully torn apart.

When a rejection happens, both wolves feel the tear, but the one who broke the oath out of selfishness bears the full weight of the spiritual shock.

I felt a light, cool breeze sweep through my chest as the golden chain snapped into dust. The heavy, aching weight that had pressed against my heart for six years vanished instantly. I felt light. I felt clean. I felt completely free.

"Alaric!" Thalia shrieked, rushing down the stairs and throwing her arms around his shaking shoulders. "Alaric! Oh my god, are you okay? Lyra, what did you do to him?!"

The crowd erupted into absolute chaos.

"She rejected the Alpha!" a guard yelled.

"Look at him! He's in pain!" a woman cried out.

"How could she break a mate bond in public?!" another voice shouted from the back.

Alaric slowly raised his head, his face pale, sweat dripping down his forehead, his eyes red and filled with wild, raw fury. He pushed Thalia’s hands away and forced himself to stand up, his chest heaving as he stared at me like he wanted to tear me apart with his bare hands.

"You... you stupid bitch," Alaric growled through his teeth, his voice shaking with pure hatred. "You think you're clever? You think you can stand in my hall and humiliate me like this?"

"I didn't humiliate you, Alaric," I said, standing completely unbothered in the center of the circle. "You humiliated yourself the moment you forgot how to be a leader."

"You are nothing without me!" Alaric roared, taking two ragged steps toward the edge of the circle. "Who do you think you are?! You have no family left! You have no mate! Without pack protection, you won't survive a single month out in the wild! You will come crawling back to this door on your knees, begging me to take you back!"

The crowd watched in breathless terror. Thalia stood behind him, her face pale, completely forgotten as Alaric’s rage filled the entire room.

I didn't back away. I didn't flinch.

Instead, I slowly reached inside my coat.

I pulled out the thick leather binder containing the certified audit copies and held it high above my head, turning in a full circle so every single person, every elder, and every guard in the grand hall could see the bold red wax seal stamped across the cover.

"I won't be crawling anywhere, Alaric," I said, my voice cutting through his anger like a cold blade. "Because before this sun sets today, you are the one who will be answering to the council for where fifty thousand dollars of our emergency winter medical fund went!”

I threw a dark tarp over the boxes and pulled the straps tight, securing everything before the frost could ruin it.The courtyard was in total confusion. Row after row of tall wooden shelves stood in the dim light, filled with box after box of old papers, tax logs, and trade receipts. For six years, I was the only person who came down here. I knew where every single piece of paper was stored. I knew which boards squeaked, which keys belonged to which locks, and where Alaric hid his secrets when he thought no one was watching.I pulled out my brass master key ring. The meta

He didn't ask permission. He didn't even look at me when he took a slow sip from the ceramic cup, letting the steam rise up between us. The warm, sweet scent of cinnamon filled the air, a cruel reminder of how many early mornings I had spent standing by the stove, perfecting that exact recipe just to see him smile for two seconds. He didn't care about the tea. He never had. It was just something he expected me to provide."You're making a scene outside, Lyra," Alaric said, his tone cold and sharp. He set the steaming mug down on my bedside table, right on top of my clean paperwork, leaving a round wet ring on the wood. "The guards are listening. The neighbors are watching. My chest felt like someone had driven an iron spike straight through my ribs, pinning me to the floor. I remembered the cold. God, I remembered the screaming wind, the ice cracking under my skin, and the way the freeze settled into my bones until my heart stopped beating.I waited for the dark. I waited for the total silence of dying alone in a blizzard outside a locked door.Instead, warm sunlight hit my face.I gasped, sitting up so fast my head spun. My knees hit a blanket. A real, soft blanket. I pulled my hands away from my throat and stared down at them. No frostbite. No black, dead skin. No cracked fingernails bleeding into the snow. My skin was smooth, warm, and completely unblemished.I looked around the room. It was tiny. The small wooden bed, the narrow wardrobe, the desk piled high with ledger papers a
