The city was dying, and so was Emily Carter.

Blood soaked through her jacket, warm and sticky against the cold night air. She staggered through the alley behind what used to be a grocery store, her hand pressed hard against the gash on her side. Somewhere behind her, the moans of the infected rose and fell like a tide that never stopped coming in.

Three months. That was how long the world had been like this. Three months since the virus tore through every city on earth and turned neighbors into monsters. Three months of scavenging, hiding, running. Three months of believing that if she just held on, if she just stayed close to Jason, they would make it through together.

She had been wrong.

"Jason!" Her voice cracked as she rounded the corner, praying he was still where she'd left him, guarding the truck loaded with everything they had gathered. Canned food. Medicine. Two crates of ammunition she had bled for, literally, prying them out of a collapsed pharmacy while a horde clawed at the barricade behind her.

The truck was gone.

Emily stopped dead in the middle of the street, chest heaving, and stared at the empty space where it had been parked an hour ago. For a moment her mind refused to accept it. Then she saw the tire tracks, fresh in the ash and grime, leading away toward the highway.

He wouldn't. He couldn't.

But he had.

A groan sounded behind her, low and wet, and she spun around with the kitchen knife that was her only remaining weapon. A woman in a torn cardigan lurched out of the shadows, skin gray, eyes clouded white. Emily backed away, her boots slipping on broken glass, and that was when she heard it — the low rumble of an engine, growing louder instead of fading.

Relief hit her like a wave. He came back. He came back for me.

The truck rolled into view, headlights cutting through the dark. Emily ran toward it, waving her free arm, screaming his name. Then she saw who was sitting beside him in the passenger seat.

Vanessa.

Her honey-blond hair was pulled into a neat ponytail, untouched by three months of hell, her nails still painted a soft pink. She looked at Emily through the windshield with something close to amusement.

"Jason!" Emily pounded on the driver's door as he slowed, not stopped, just slowed enough to roll the window down a crack. "What are you doing? We have to go, there's a horde two blocks back—"

"I'm sorry, Em." He wouldn't look at her. His hands stayed locked on the wheel, knuckles white. "I can't keep splitting our supplies between two people when Vanessa needs them more."

"Needs them more?" The words didn't make sense. Nothing made sense. "I'm the one who got these supplies. I nearly died getting that medicine—"

"She's pregnant." Vanessa leaned across him, her voice sickly sweet. "With Jason's baby. So you understand why he has to take care of us first."

The knife slipped from Emily's fingers.

For a moment, the world went silent — no moans, no wind, nothing but the roaring in her own ears. Two years. Two years of loving this man, of believing every promise he whispered in the dark when the world felt like it was ending. Two years, erased in a single sentence.

"You're lying," she whispered. "Jason, tell her she's lying."

He finally looked at her, and what she saw in his eyes wasn't love. It was pity. The kind you gave something you were about to throw away.

"Take care of yourself, Em." He hit the gas.

The truck lurched forward, and Emily barely threw herself out of the way before the tires would have caught her legs. She hit the pavement hard, pain exploding through her shoulder, and watched the taillights shrink into the darkness, carrying away three months of blood, sweat, and everything she owned.

Carrying away the man she had trusted with her life.

The moan came again, closer this time. Emily rolled onto her back and saw them — not one infected, but a dozen, spilling out of the ruined storefronts on both sides of the street, drawn by the noise of the engine and her own screaming. She scrambled for the knife, fingers closing around the handle just as the nearest one lunged.

She fought. God, she fought. She drove the blade into skulls until her arm went numb, until the knife slipped from her blood-slicked grip and she had nothing left but her fists and her fury. But there were too many, and she was bleeding, and the strength that had carried her through three months of horror finally ran out.

Teeth sank into her shoulder. She screamed and twisted away, but more hands grabbed her, more mouths found purchase, and the pain became a single white wall that swallowed everything else.

As her vision darkened, she thought of the truck, of Vanessa's smug little smile, of Jason's cowardly refusal to meet her eyes as he drove away. She thought of every sacrifice she had made for a man who threw her to the monsters the moment someone easier came along.

If I get another chance, she thought, feeling her heartbeat stutter and slow, I will never be so foolish again.

I will never let anyone use my love as a weapon against me.

I will survive. Whatever it takes. I will survive, and I will never need a man like him to do it.

The last thing she felt was the cold concrete beneath her, and the strange, distant sound of a voice that didn't belong to any of the monsters around her — calm, mechanical, almost gentle.

"Host detected. Rebirth protocol... initializing."

Then there was nothing at all.

Emily's eyes snapped open.

Sunlight. Warm, golden, ordinary morning sunlight streamed through a window she recognized instantly — the small apartment she'd lived in before the world ended. Her heart slammed against her ribs as she shot upright, hands flying to her shoulder, to her side, searching for wounds that weren't there.

No blood. No bite marks. No pain.

On the nightstand, her phone lit up with the date, and Emily stared at it until her vision blurred.

One month before the outbreak.

She was alive. She was young again, unbitten, unbroken — and she remembered everything. Every death, every betrayal, every horrifying lesson the apocalypse had taught her.

A notification chimed somewhere inside her own skull, and a voice she had never heard before, calm and clinical, spoke directly into her mind.

"Congratulations, Host. The SSS-Level Survival System has been successfully activated."

Emily sat frozen in her bed, staring at nothing, as the weight of a second chance settled over her like armor.

This time, she thought, her hands curling into fists, I won't die for anyone.

Six weeks after the outbreak began, the settlement on Miller Road had become something Emily barely recognized from the empty warehouse she'd first stood inside, a lifetime of preparation ago.Nearly forty survivors now called it home, spread across the main warehouse and two adjacent buildings Marcus and David had spent the past weeks fortifying, connected by covered walkways that let people move safely between shelter, medical bay, and the growing garden Maria had organized in what used to be a loading yard. Solar panels lined the roof, humming with the quiet promise of power that didn't depend on scavenged fuel. A watchtower, built from salvaged scaffolding, gave Marcus's growing security team clear sightlines in every direction. It wasn't paradise. The world outside remained as dangerous and broken as ever, and the shadow of what Emily now knew about Praxis Group and Project Chimera hung over every plan she made for the future. But it was, undeniably, a home — the kind she'd once

The footsteps grew louder, shaking dust from the ceiling tiles with every impact, and Emily's Tactical Overview painted a picture that made her stomach drop — something massive, moving with deliberate, almost intelligent purpose, converging on their exact position through corridors it seemed to know better than they did."Move," Daniel snapped, already herding his team toward the reinforced door they'd entered through. "Now."They ran, boots pounding against tile, flashlight beams bouncing wildly against walls lined with abandoned equipment. Behind them, the footsteps accelerated into something closer to a charge, and the entire hallway trembled as whatever pursued them crashed through a doorway that had clearly not been built to withstand it.Emily risked a glance backward and immediately wished she hadn't.It had once been human, the way the mutant in the alley had once been human, but scaled up into something far worse — nearly nine feet tall, its body a grotesque architecture of e

The Halloway Research Campus sat behind three layers of chain-link fencing on the northern edge of the city, close enough to the original outbreak site that even a month later, the ground around it seemed wrong somehow — too quiet, birds refusing to nest in the skeletal trees that lined the access road.Emily hadn't planned to come here so soon. But the system's persistent notification, and her own growing unease about mutations appearing weeks ahead of the timeline she remembered, had made the decision for her."You're sure about this?" Marcus asked, crouched beside her in the tree line overlooking the facility's outer fence. "Whatever caused all this started here. Doesn't exactly scream 'safe place to go looking around.'""I'm not sure of anything anymore," Emily admitted. "That's the problem. Everything I remember about how this was supposed to go is starting to fall apart. Mutants three weeks early. A virus that's evolving faster than it should. I need to know why."They weren't a

They came three nights later, under cover of darkness, exactly as Emily had known they would. Her Threat Sense had been humming a low, steady warning since sundown, sharpening with every passing hour until, just past midnight, it spiked hard enough to jolt her upright on her cot. She was on her feet and moving before she'd fully processed the alert, waking Marcus with a hand on his shoulder."They're here."The defenses they'd spent three days preparing snapped into motion with practiced precision. David killed the visible lights, plunging the warehouse into strategic darkness while keeping their own night-vision advantage intact — a scavenged set of goggles Emily had specifically prioritized after her tactical awareness flagged how badly they'd need them. Marcus took position at the reinforced door with two of the survivors he'd been training, rifles ready. Sarah moved the noncombatants — Maria, Lily, and the others too young or too injured to fight — into the fortified back room Dav

Two weeks after the outbreak, the warehouse on Miller Road had stopped looking like an abandoned building and started looking like something else entirely — a fortress, small but growing, humming with the quiet industry of people who had decided, together, that they were going to live.David had rigged the solar panels within his promised week, giving them power that didn't depend on a generator's dwindling fuel supply. Sarah had converted a side office into a functioning medical bay, sparse but clean, and had already treated two survivors Emily brought in from the wreckage of the city beyond their walls. Maria organized the growing supply stores with an efficiency that made even Marcus raise his eyebrows, and Lily, resilient in the particular way only children seemed able to manage, had started drawing pictures of the warehouse on scraps of cardboard, labeling it HOME in careful six-year-old letters.Fourteen people now called the warehouse home, each one someone Emily remembered los

By the fourth day, the city Emily had grown up in no longer resembled anything human. She stood at the edge of the loading bay, dressed in salvaged tactical gear that Marcus had scrounged from an army surplus store before the roads became impassable, and studied the map spread across a supply crate. Red circles marked the locations of the people she remembered — survivors who, in her old life, hadn't found safety until it was almost too late, if they found it at all."You want to go out there." Marcus didn't phrase it as a question. "Into that.""There's a woman two miles from here with a six-year-old daughter, trapped in an apartment building surrounded by infected," Emily said, not looking up from the map. "There's an engineer holed up in a hardware store who's going to run out of food in two days. I'm not leaving them to die because it's inconvenient.""It's not inconvenient. It's suicide.""Not for me." Emily rolled the map and tucked it into her jacket. "I have advantages you don
