THIRD PERSON'S POV

Danielle blinked rapidly and a thought slipped into her mind.

She wondered if she should tell mommy that she was still sick.

It sounded like a good idea that would make mommy want to stay with her.

The thought was very tempting but Danielle eventually didn't act on it. Because she remembered that mommy had once told her that 'good girls don't lie.'

She didn't want to be a bad girl, and she didn't want to lie to mommy so she nodded her head, "Yes mommy, I feel better now but my throat hurts and my eyes too."

Sara knew those were all still lingering effects of the fever but was glad to hear Danielle say that it had subsided.

Against herself, she reached over and patted Danielle's head down, mumbling, "That's good."

Whoever Danielle fell sick, it always became an additional source of worry for her and she hated how anxious it always made her feel. It was a habit that had come into being over time and even now that she had changed with regards to a lot of things, she st

SARA’S POVMy fingers toyed with the fabric of my cloth. I was nervous and try as much as I could to hide it, it still showed.“I wasn’t trying,” I said quietly without glancing at Alaric. “I was just trying to avoid making a scene.”“Sara.” He muttered, eyes digging into me gently.“When someone makes you uncomfortable, that’s not the time to act politely towards them. You either make it known that their presence makes you uncomfortable or you walk away.He wasn’t reprimanding me, he didn’t even sound chiding but I looked away. The chandelier above us blurred for a second, not from tears, just from the sudden tightness behind my eyes.“Right,” I whispered and pressed my lips together. “You do have a point.”“I make more than a point Sara, you should listen to me.” He didn’t touch me but he drew closer. “If that bastard ever approaches you again, call for me immediately. If I’m not there, place a call.”My brows lifted and even my eyes widened in surprise. It was my first time hearin

SARA’S POVI didn't think getting ready for some gala could get me so damn nervous. It wasn't like it was the first time I had been to one.But as I stood in front of the mirror, smoothing the satin of the navy-blue dress on my body, I felt the unease in my chest that had been growing since morning. The dress wasn't over the top. Alaric had talked to the team about presenting ourselves "professional, elegant, appropriate," but on my body it looked soft and feminine.I even looked beautiful, too, and that was a feeling I hadn't experienced in quite some time. Not because I didn't think I was beautiful, but it had been rather long since I got dolled up that well. The necklace resting at my throat was a small pendant I'd bought years ago when Danielle was born. It had been just a cheap roadside necklace, but one of my favorites because of the year I'd gotten it.It caught the light as I inhaled deeply, and my mind wandered to when Daneille was younger. Then she tugged on it, laughing, an

THIRD PERSON’S POV The conference day had sapped far more of her energy than Sara expected. The whole event was more than she expected. She stepped out of the hotel lobby and thrust her hands into her pockets, inhaling the crisp evening air. The city lights glittered against the water, reflections swaying with every ripple. It wasn’t home, and yet… It felt freeing to walk without anyone expecting something from her.Derek couldn’t be found here.Neither could Alyssa. There wasn’t total peace but there wasn’t tension either and she didn’t have to watch her steps at every turn. There was air, and then there was space to breathe easily. She exhaled slowly, going with the flow while letting the muscles that had bunched up in her shoulders loosen for the first time that day.Her presentation had gone better than she imagined, way better than she hoped. Alaric said she did well. She didn’t believe him at first and thought he was just sugar coating his words to put her at ease but colleag

SARA’S POVThe morning light filtered through the thin curtains of the Grand Savoy’s conference hall, casting a soft glow over rows of polished chairs and the glass podium at the front. Sara adjusted the folder in her hands for the third time, forcing her fingers to stop trembling. It wasn’t fear, not exactly. It was the weight of being here… in Vienna, in a place she’d never imagined she’d stand as a representative and speaker. The low hum of conversations built around her. Executives, researchers, CEOs, government delegates, all mingling, shaking hands, settling into their seats. Sara inhaled and released a steady breath. You can do this.Alaric stood a few feet away, reading through the materials for the session. He didn’t look tense. He rarely did. His presence alone had a grounding effect on her. When he glanced up at her, his eyes softened.“You’re ready,” he said with quiet certainty.Sara’s lips pulled into a small, nervous smile. “If you say so.”“I do,” he returned, tone fi

THIRD PERSON’S POVDanielle pressed the green crayon a little harder than she meant to. It broke on the paper she had spread out in front of her.Startled, she tried to remedy her actions by wiping her hands over it but ended up smudging the color even more, messing up her drawing.A huff of frustration left her lips and she crumpled the paper and tossed it angrily, watching as it fell next to the bin. She shouldn’t litter, she knew that, but she was too angry and sad to care. Her lips pulled into a pout and she lowered her head, thinking to herself that she would just endure it if Mrs Williams yelled at her for littering.Reaching foward, she grabbed another crayon from her box, a pink one this time, because she knew mommy liked it better when she colored in pink.Mommy had never told her that directly but she had noticed it on her own and she was sure she was right. She put her all into coloring, biting her lips as she did so while the classroom buzzed around her. Her classmates p

SARA’S POVAlaric stood with one hand draped in his pocket, leaning casually against the wall outside my room with a paper bag in his other untucked hand. “Alaric?” I called, stepping out without fully opening the door.“You’re awake,” he muttered. “I wasn’t sure if I’d disturb you.”“You didn’t.” I said, stepping back. “Is something wrong?”“No.” His gaze softened. “You seemed tense earlier. I remembered you didn’t really eat anything on the flight, so I had room service send up pastries. I figured you might be hungry before bed.”“You got me pastries?” I echoed in surprise.“Yes. They’re just downstairs and they take orders until late at night.” He responded then smiled at me. “I wasn’t sure about what you’d like, so I brought a little of everything.”It was a gesture I wasn’t expecting and warmth bloomed in my chest.“Thank you,” I whispered. It was an act so thoughtful and I appreciated it.He gave me another smile . “I’ll take my leave now and you should get some rest. It will b
