The deeper they walked, the less the Forbidden Forest resembled anything Selena had known.

Silver Claw territory had been ordered, marked trails, cleared hunting grounds, the careful management of an Alpha who wanted every inch of land to reflect strength. Here the trees grew as they pleased. Massive trunks rose like the pillars of a ruined temple, their bark nearly black and scored with age. Roots twisted across the ground in thick, knotted ridges that forced careful footing. The canopy overhead was so dense that daylight arrived only as a soft, green-filtered gloom. Sound behaved strangely. Her own footsteps seemed swallowed within a few paces, yet the occasional distant crack of a branch carried with unnatural clarity.

Kael moved through it as though the forest itself adjusted around him.

Selena kept close, the borrowed cloak drawn tight against the deepening chill. The boots he had given her protected her feet far better than her own bare skin had, but every step still reminded her of the cuts beneath the bandages. The rejection wound in her chest had settled into a steady, grinding ache, no longer the sharp tear of the first night, but a constant pressure that made deep breaths difficult. Her wolf remained quiet, curled inward, offering neither strength nor comfort. Shifting still felt impossible.

They did not speak for a long while. Kael set a pace that challenged her without openly leaving her behind. When the terrain grew steeper he slowed by a fraction, never commenting on the adjustment. When a narrow stream cut across their path he crossed first, then waited on the far bank until she reached him. The small considerations accumulated like stones in a pocket, unremarkable alone, heavier together.

Near what she guessed was mid-afternoon, Kael halted so suddenly that Selena nearly walked into his back.

He stood motionless, head slightly tilted, crimson eyes narrowed toward a stand of darker trees to their left. One hand lifted, palm open, a silent command to stop and stay silent. Selena froze. Her heart began to hammer. She strained her senses the way she had been taught as a pup, but the forest gave her nothing useful. Only the usual layered scents of moss, wet stone, and old growth.

Kael's voice came low, barely more than breath. "Do not run. Whatever happens, stay behind me."

Before she could ask what he meant, the undergrowth shifted.

Three shapes emerged from the shadows between the trees, wolves, but wrong. Their coats were patchy and dull, their bodies too thin, their eyes a sickly, pale yellow instead of the healthy gold or amber of normal wolves. Foam flecked their jaws. The scent that reached her was rank, edged with rot and something chemical she could not name. These were not wild wolves. They were not pack wolves either. They were corrupted.

The largest of the three fixed its gaze on Selena and snarled.

Kael moved.

He did not shift fully, not the way southern wolves did, but something in his posture changed. Power rolled off him in a visible shimmer of heat. When the first corrupted wolf lunged, Kael met it with a single, devastating strike of his forearm that sent the creature slamming into a tree trunk with a wet crack. The second came from the side. Kael pivoted, caught it by the throat, and drove it into the ground hard enough that the earth itself seemed to shudder. The third tried to circle toward Selena.

She stumbled backward, cloak catching on a root. Her wolf finally surged, too late, too weak, but the impulse to protect herself flared hot and useless. She had no claws, no speed, no strength left after the rejection.

Kael was already there.

He placed himself between her and the remaining creature with a speed that blurred. One moment he stood several paces away; the next he was a wall of dark clothing and contained violence. The corrupted wolf leapt. Kael's hand closed around its muzzle mid-air and twisted. A sharp, final sound. The body dropped.

Silence rushed back into the clearing, broken only by Selena's ragged breathing.

Kael stood over the three corpses for a moment longer, shoulders rising and falling once. When he turned, the crimson of his eyes had brightened to a sharper glow. Blood, dark and wrong-smelling, stained the sleeve of his tunic.

"Are you hurt?" he asked.

Selena shook her head. Words would not come immediately. She stared at the nearest body. The fur along its spine had begun to blacken and flake even in death, as though whatever had poisoned it continued to work.

"What were they?" she managed.

"Corrupted." Kael's voice was flat. "The blight that has been spreading in the southern territories has begun to touch the borderlands as well. These were once ordinary wolves. Something darker got into their blood." He wiped his sleeve against a clean patch of moss, though the stain remained. "They should not have been this far north."

Selena wrapped her arms around herself. The sight of the bodies, the speed of the violence, the casual power Kael had displayed, all of it pressed against the fragile sense of safety she had begun to build. Yet he had placed himself between her and the threat without hesitation. That fact sat beside the fear and refused to leave.

"Will there be more?" she asked.

"Possibly." He scanned the trees again. "We move faster now. There is an outpost half a day's walk from here. We reach it before nightfall."

He did not wait for agreement. He simply started walking, and Selena followed because the alternative was remaining alone with the dead things and the knowledge that the forest contained worse than ordinary predators.

They traveled hard for the next several hours. The terrain grew rockier. The air turned colder. Selena's legs burned and her bandaged feet protested every uneven step, but she kept pace through sheer stubbornness. The rejection ache flared whenever her heart rate climbed too high, as though the broken bond itself resented the effort of survival. She clenched her jaw and endured it.

Kael glanced back at her more often now. He did not offer to carry her, she would have refused, but he adjusted their route to avoid the steepest climbs and the densest thickets. Once, when she stumbled hard enough that her knee struck stone, he stopped and waited in silence until she regained her feet. No mockery. No impatience. Only the steady expectation that she would rise and continue.

Near dusk the trees finally began to thin.

A narrow ridge rose ahead, crowned by a low stone structure that looked more deliberate than the waystation where she had spent the previous night. Watchtowers flanked a heavy wooden gate. Torches already burned in iron brackets, their light pushing back the advancing gloom. Figures moved along the wall, taller than ordinary wolves, broader in the shoulder. Lycans.

Kael slowed as they approached the final stretch of open ground. "Stay close. Say little until I speak for you."

Selena nodded, throat tight. The gate loomed larger with every step. She could feel eyes on her from the walls, curious, assessing, not yet hostile. Her fingers curled into the fabric of the borrowed cloak, seeking the small comfort of something that belonged, however temporarily, to the male walking beside her.

They were twenty paces from the gate when the wind shifted.

Kael stopped dead.

His entire body went rigid. The crimson of his eyes flared bright enough that Selena saw the glow against the darkening air. He turned his head sharply toward the tree line they had just left, nostrils flaring.

"What is it?" she whispered.

He did not answer at once. When he did, his voice had dropped into something colder and far more dangerous than she had yet heard from him.

"Not corrupted wolves."

A new scent reached her then, faint, carried on the evening wind. It was nothing like the rank rot of the creatures they had fought. This smell was cleaner, sharper, and laced with a bitter herbal note she recognized from the rare times Silver Claw's healers had handled forbidden plants.

Witchcraft.

Kael's hand closed around her upper arm, not hard enough to hurt, but firm enough that she could not step away. His gaze remained fixed on the dark wall of trees behind them.

"Someone is tracking you," he said quietly. "And they are no longer content to watch from a distance."

A single figure stepped out of the shadows at the edge of the forest.

Cloaked. Hooded. Face hidden. One hand raised, fingers already curling around a sickly green light that pulsed like a living thing.

The figure's voice carried across the open ground, soft and almost pleasant.

"There you are, little rejected Luna. Vanessa sends her regards."

The green light flared.

Kael shoved Selena behind him so hard she staggered, and the world exploded into motion and violence as the first bolt of corrupted magic tore through the air toward them both.

Sleep did not come easily.Selena lay on the narrow but clean bed in the commander's quarters, staring at the low wooden ceiling while the outpost settled into night sounds around her. Distant footsteps on stone. The soft clink of armor as the watch changed. A low murmur of voices speaking in the deeper, more guttural cadence of the Lycan tongue. None of it was familiar. All of it felt safer than the silence of the forest or the false warmth of Silver Claw. Her body ached. The cuts on her feet throbbed beneath fresh bandages a silent healer had applied without comment or judgment. The rejection wound in her chest pulsed in slow, stubborn waves. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the hooded woman's yellow gaze and heard the words that had followed her across the border.Fat little orphan.Vanessa had not even needed to come herself. She had simply pointed, and someone had obeyed.Selena turned onto her side and pressed her palm flat against the hollow place behind her ribs. The moo

The first bolt of corrupted magic screamed through the air like a living thing.Kael moved faster than Selena's eyes could follow. One moment his hand was still locked around her arm; the next he had spun, shoving her hard enough that she stumbled several paces toward the gate while his body took the place where hers had been. The green light struck him squarely in the chest with a sound like wet cloth tearing. The impact forced him back a step, boots carving shallow grooves in the dirt, but he did not fall.A low, resonant growl rolled out of him, deeper and more primal than any sound she had heard from a southern wolf. The hooded figure raised both hands. More of the sickly green energy gathered between their palms, swirling and spitting sparks that smelled of burnt herbs and spoiled blood. Vanessa's messenger. Or the Dark Witch's. The distinction no longer mattered. Someone from her old life had followed her into the one place she had begun to believe might be safe.Selena's wolf f

Selena woke to the smell of woodsmoke and something warm cooking. For a moment she did not remember where she was. The narrow cot beneath her was harder than the thin mattress she had shared in the Silver Claw living quarters, and the air carried none of the familiar scents of pack, no lingering grease from the kitchens, no perfume Vanessa favored, no damp wool of warriors' cloaks. Instead there was cedar, clean stone, and the faint metallic edge of the forest itself. Then the hollow place in her chest pulsed, and everything returned. The ceremony. The silver light. Ryker's voice cutting the bond with six cold words. The long walk into darkness. Crimson eyes. A Lycan named Kael who had cleaned her feet and given her a tunic that still smelled faintly of him.She opened her eyes.Daylight filtered through the small, high window of the stone shelter in thin gray shafts. The fire had been rebuilt and burned steadily. Kael sat on a low stool near the hearth, sleeves rolled to the elbows,

Kael returned sooner than Selena expected. The wooden door opened without sound, and the cool night air swept in behind him, carrying the scent of damp moss and distant water. He carried a shallow stone bowl in one hand and a small leather satchel in the other. The firelight caught the edges of his face as he stepped inside, turning the crimson of his eyes momentarily brighter before they settled again into that banked-ember glow. Selena remained on the edge of the cot, arms still wrapped around her middle. She had not moved since he left. Part of her had expected him not to return at all. Another part had expected something worse, some test, some demand, some reminder that she was a soft southern wolf bleeding on land that did not belong to her. Instead he set the bowl on the small table and opened the satchel with practiced efficiency. "Drink first," he said. The water was cold and clean, tasting of stone and deep springs. Selena drank carefully, afraid that greed would make he

The Forbidden Northern Forest did not welcome her.Selena's bare feet sank into cold, damp earth the moment she crossed the invisible boundary. The trees here were older, their trunks thicker and blacker, their branches knitted so tightly overhead that the moonlight struggled to reach the ground. What little silver light managed to filter through fell in broken shards, never enough to fully illuminate the path. The air smelled different, sharper, older, laced with something metallic and wild that made the fine hairs on her arms rise. She kept walking anyway.Every step sent a fresh pulse of pain through the empty place where the mate bond had briefly lived. The rejection still burned like a brand behind her ribs. She could feel the exact shape of the absence, the place where Ryker's presence had flooded her for those few luminous seconds before he cut it away with six cold words. I reject the bond. The memory replayed without mercy. The way his eyes had hardened. The way the pack's co
