Elara

The first day of peace was strange.

I woke to sunlight streaming through the window, warm and golden and soft. No frost. No darkness. No screaming. Just sunlight, and the quiet sound of birds singing in the courtyard below.

For a moment, I did not know where I was. I did not know what had happened. I did not know if the Devourer was still out there, still hunting us, still waiting.

And then I remembered.

She was gone. The darkness was destroyed. The war was over.

ElaraThe first day of peace was strange.I woke to sunlight streaming through the window, warm and golden and soft. The war was over.I lay there for a long moment, staring at the ceiling, letting the realization wash over me. We had won. We had actually won.Riven stirred beside me, his arm tightening around my waist."You're awake," he murmured."I am."He propped himself up on one elbow, looking down at me. His amber eyes were soft in the morning light, his scarred face relaxed in a way I had not seen in months."How do you feel?" he asked.I considered the question. "Strange," I admitted. "I keep waiting for something to happen. For the darkness t

  • REJECTED LUNA, CLAIMED BY THE ROGUE KING    Chapter 79: The Honoring of the Fallen

ElaraThe funeral rites began at dawn.We gathered in the great courtyard every wolf in the kingdom, from the oldest warrior to the youngest pup. The northerners stood with the westerners. The southerners stood with the Shadow Territory wolves. There were no divisions anymore, no separate groups, no lingering suspicion. We had fought together. We had bled together. We had lost together. And now, we would grieve together. The bodies of the fallen had been laid out in neat rows, each one wrapped in white linen, each one surrounded by wildflowers that had been gathered from the frozen fields. There were four hundred and thirty-seven of them. Four hundred and thirty-seven wolves who had given their lives so that the rest of us could live.I stood at the front of the gathering with Riven at my side, the Flame blazing softly in my hands. Kaelen stood beside me, his small hand in mine. Lyanna stood beside him, her binding rune glowing steadily. Naia stood behind them, her face pale but stead

  • REJECTED LUNA, CLAIMED BY THE ROGUE KING    Chapter 78: The Aftermath of War

ElaraThe journey home took three days.Three days of riding through frozen forests and across frozen rivers. Three days of tending to the wounded, of burying the dead, of counting the cost of our victory. Three days of watching the wolves around me exhausted, bloodied, but alive and wondering if we would ever truly recover from what we had done.We had won. The Devourer was destroyed. The darkness was gone. But the price had been high.I rode at the front of the column with Riven at my side, our horses moving slowly through the snow. Behind us, the army stretched back for miles thousands of wolves, their silver fire dimmed, their faces drawn. They had fought bravely. They had fought fiercely. They had fought until their bodies gave out.And now, they were coming home."Four hundred and thirty-seven," Soren reported quietly, riding up beside us. "That's the count so far. We're still finding bodies."I felt my heart clench."So many.""More than we lost against the Pale Mother. More th

  • REJECTED LUNA, CLAIMED BY THE ROGUE KING    Chapter 77: The Battle of the Pass

RivenThe Devourer came through the pass like a storm of shadow. Not in a body. Not in a vessel. She came as darkness itself—a living, breathing wall of black that consumed everything in its path. The frost spread before her, thick and glistening, turning the ground to glass. The air grew so cold it burned. The silver fire in my blood flickered, struggling against the cold."Hold the line!" I roared. My wolves answered. They always answered. We fought like demons. We fought like wolves who had nothing left to lose. We cut down vessels, we tore through dead-flesh, we burned the old Council's souls with silver fire. The pass ran red with blood. The snow turned black with frost. The cliffs echoed with screams and howls and the clash of claws against bone. But the Devourer kept coming. She did not stop. She did not slow. She simply... advanced. And everywhere she touched, the darkness spread."Elara!" I shouted, searching for her in the chaos."I'm here!" Her voice cut through the noise,

ElaraWe left for the mountain pass at dawn. The fortress was quiet as we rode out not the heavy silence of fear, but the steady silence of a pack preparing for war. The wolves who remained behind stood in the courtyard, their silver fire blazing, their faces lifted. They were not running. They were not hiding. They were waiting.Naia stood at the gate with the children. Kaelen was pale, his small hands fisted at his sides. Lyanna was crying silently, her binding rune glowing steadily. They did not speak. They simply watched us go.I dismounted and crossed to them."Stay safe," I said, kneeling in front of Kaelen. "Stay strong. And protect each other."He nodded, his jaw tight."I will."I pulled him into my arms, holding him close. Then I pulled Lyanna in too, and I held them both for a long moment."We'll be back," I whispered. "I promise.""Promise?" Lyanna echoed."Promise."I stood and looked at Naia."Keep them safe.""With my life," she said.I nodded, and then I mounted my hor

ElaraThe scouts returned on the twenty-first day.I was in the war room when they arrived, studying the maps of the northern wastes with Riven and the other leaders. The room was thick with tension the kind that comes before a storm, when the air is heavy and the sky is dark and every wolf knows that something terrible is coming. The door burst open, and three wolves stumbled in. They were frozen, exhausted, their silver fire dimmed to almost nothing. One of them a young tracker named Erik was bleeding from a wound on his side, the blood frozen to his skin."She's moving," he gasped. "The Devourer. She's marching south."I felt my blood run cold."How many?" Riven demanded."Thousands. Tens of thousands. Vessels, dead-flesh, the old Council's souls—all of them. They're moving through the frozen forest, heading for the mountain pass.""How long until they reach us?"Erik shook his head."Three days. Maybe four. She's not stopping. She's not resting. She's just... marching."I looked a
