"Ahhhh" Ria sprang up from the bed, her face lighting up with a smile.
"What's going on? Emily hurried into the room, her eyes wide with curiosity. She had been in the middle of an online meeting in the sitting room when she suddenly heard Ria shout. "They called me in for an interview on Monday!" Ria's voice was bursting with excitement. "That's good news." Emily's eyes sparkled with excitement as she grabbed Ria's hands. "But... wait, which company is that?" "The Williams Group!" Emily's jaw dropped. "Shut up! You mean The Williams Group?" She nodded enthusiastically. "Yes the one and only Williams Group in this city." "oh Ria, I'm so happy for you!, I knew you were going to get the job," Her smile faltered for a moment. "But how did they even get my contact? I never submitted any details for an interview?" "What do you mean by how?" Emily frowned. "You went there last week, right? "And caused chaos? Yeah..." her voice dropped and she sat down on the edge of the bed. "What do you mean 'chaos'?" Emily asked with concern creeping into her tone. "Well... I ran into Nathan there and he found out about my plan" her voice trailed. "Oh that's not good. What happened next?" Emily eyes narrowed. "He'd already signed the contract before I arrived and he thought I was only trying to get back at him because we broke up" "He's not wrong" Emily smirked. Ria laughed softly, shaking her head. "I know. But after all that, I thought my chances at the Williams Group were over." "But they are not," Emily grinned widely. "No matter how it all went down, it all worked out at last and first thing tomorrow morning, we're going shopping!. We're going to find the perfect dress for the interview. Then she went back to the sitting room, leaving Ria alone with her thoughts. Her mind wondered back to that day— she'd walked out of Williams Group, when she heard Nathan call after her. "Ria can we talk?" She didn't stop. She kept walking until she reached the roadside, standing by the spot where cabs usually lined up. She ignored him hoping silence would be enough to drive him away. "Can you just... listen to me? She didn't turn, but something in her heart cracked. She hated that a tiny part of her wanted to know why. "Go on," she said, her voice was flat. "I never wanted to hurt you," he started, his voice pleading. "I love you. But... you know how Kelly is. She's fragile. Soft. She seduced me and after the first time, I couldn't resist her again." Ria blinked. She was stunned. That was it? That was his excuse? He was trying to pin it on her— Kelly's softness. God. He made it sound like she had tricked him with a whisper. She used to hide her fear and insecurities behind a strong front, always standing in tall beside him while he found his footing at his father's company. She never let herself look weak, not because she didn't feel things but because she thought he needed someone steady. And now she was being punished for not being soft enough? Kelly played the helpless girl and he fell right into it. He knew the history. He knew what her relationship with Kelly and her parents was like. And he still did it anyway. Love? She had loved him. Once. But not anymore. Never again. "Can you come back to me, Ria?" he inched closer. "I'll fix everything, this time around I'll give you an official status— let the whole world know that we're together. She stared at him like he'd lost his damn mind. Was this a joke? "An official status" She repeated and laughed. It was the kind of laugh that was drawn from disbelief. "Are you serious right now? He didn't answer. "You think that's what I wanted all this time? Do you think I'm still the naive girl who clung to your every word and would come running back because you're suddenly ready to parade me around like a trophy?" She took a step closer. "Give that 'status' to Kelly, I'm sure she would appreciate it more" And then she narrowed her eyes. "Or did you change your mind because you got the contract and need me to keep designing?" He hesitated. Just for a second. But that was enough. That pause told her everything. "You really are something else," Ria muttered. Nathan looked at her with unease. Almost like he didn't recognize the girl in front of him. Like she wasn't the same girl who used to swallow her voice just to keep peace— who'd jump through the hoops to make him feel important. He'd made sure to drag her name through the mud when he found out she was looking for jobs, he called in favors and whispered poison into the ears across the industry. All to make sure that she had nowhere to go and she would come back to him. He miscalculated. He didn't expect her to fight. "Ria, please, just..." "Save it," she cut him off. "Next time we meet... Pretend we're strangers." Then she stepped into the street and waved down a cab, like she was done carrying his shadow, she got in without looking back. Well— almost. In the side mirror, she caught a glimpse of him walking back into the company like nothing had happened. Like she hadn't just crushed whatever was left between them. She thought she had lost her last chance. But maybe somehow the universe decided to smile in her and give her the opportunity even though she didn't apply for it. That was her fear. Who applied for her? She pressed a hand to her chest, her heart was racing, she was going to ask them when she gets there. It was the weekend. And Monday? Just two days away. She wasn't going to lose this opportunity.Ria walked into the house and as surprised at the sweet aroma that hit her immediately she walked in. Someone was cooking in the kitchen, the noise in there confirmed it and there was no way it was the house help, she must have left by this time. It has been two weeks after the betrayal saga and her relationship with Alex was back to square one—no talking and before she wakes up in the morning, he was already gone from work. It was evident that something happened with his father that dinner night but he refused to tell her. “I made dinner,” Alex appeared at the doorway with two plates in his hand, halting her stop from entering the kitchen. He’d seen her car drive into the garage from the balcony and quickly rushed back to set the table. The past two weeks he had been a dickhead, even though the news about Alicia threw him off guard, he wasn’t supposed to sideline the one woman he wanted to be with. He was fighting very hard and pulling the shareholders to his side but in the pro
“Yes, it wasn’t me, the one who called me said, they were from the Cooper’s Group and they had the designs, she said that I only need to give up the materials. That was the only thing did, I never leaked out the designs, please spare me.” Anna begged profusely. Getting fired from Williams Group was something she couldn’t afford; it was like an automatic ban from the industry. No other company would dare hire her. Ria stood up from her seat and went closer to where Anna was, she crouched down to where she knelt, “You said ‘she’, are you talking about Kelly Hartley.” “No… No,” it was definitely not her. She had talked to Miss Hartley several times on the phone for business matter, the voice on the phone wasn’t her. “it wasn’t her but from the way she sounded, she must be very young. The voice was very unfamiliar, so I don’t think it’s anyone from the team.” So now who was it? Ria thought that this was just a jealousy scheme from Kelly, but now there was another person and there was no
The ride back home was a quiet one, a big contrast of their coming to this place. Ria peered at Alex face, it obvious that the ‘talk’ between him and his dad did not go well. He’d come out of the study grim and without even bidding his goodbye to his mom only going to kiss Evelyn’s cheek and mumbled some words to Mrs. Williams, it was clear that he was angry. Ria decided not to ask and wait until they get back home. Immediately they got back, Alex walked straight upstairs, took his things and went into the bathroom, he came out and went downstairs without saying anything to her. Ria contemplated whether to follow him or not and then decided to go take her bath first. She came down and met him drinking, it was the first time since they got married that he drank, he never drank in front of her. “What is the matter, Alex? You’ve been this way since the ‘talk’ with your father. What did he say that made you this way?” Alex did not say a thing and kept drinking. What was he supposed to
“You look so beautiful” the woman pulled back from the hug. “Forgive my manners, I’m Katherine Williams, Alex’s mother. I’m so glad you could join us tonight; I’ve been asking Alex to bring you over for dinner but he kept making excuses.” Really? He made excuses for her? He never told her. “Mom, we’re here now,” Alex said quickly avoiding Ria’s eyes. “That’s what matter, right?” ‘Yeah, that’s true,” she replied, waving them inside. “Do come in quickly, it’s cold outside.” She took Ria’s hand and brought her inside leaving Alex standing outside. Ria looked back at Alex as she was taken. This was a typical ‘my mother-in-law thinks I’m cold situation. Where was the cold woman Alex told her about, all she saw was a loving mother. The inside of the mansion was on par with the outside, there was a chandelier above the sitting room with an elegant staircase curved up to the second floor. The table was already filled with variety of dishes, it was indeed ‘just a dinner’ “Make you
"My grandparents raised me, actually my grandmother. My grandfather died when i was four," Alex leaned his head back against the pillow as he started. He rarely shares his story with anyone but with her he felt safe and he wanted her to know everything about him. Ria remained quiet and listened, she knew how important this moment was for him, knowing that it wasn't easy for him to open up. "My dad was always too busy running the company," he continued, his voice was a little shaky now and filled with emotion; all the pent-up frustration were in it. "And my mom... she's a professor of medicine now." "After she had me, she went abroad to further her education, she was determined to reach the highest level and she did. Now she works at Central City hospital, only on appointments though... and my dad is now retired, the heart diseases from five years ago made him draw back from the business while i take over. Someone may argue that i had the best of life while growing up and indeed i
I didn’t hear you come in.” Ria said, startled when she finally turned around.Alex grinned “That’s because you were too busy looking good in that apron.”She blushed very hard, biting her bottom lip. He always had a way with words.“Dinner will be ready in a minute. I just need to dish it.”Alex moved closer to her with a teasing glint in his eyes. “I was thinking of eating something else before dinner,” he smirked.“Alex…” she breathed. He reached for her waist and drew her close to him and his touch sent a tremble to her spine. She wouldn’t lie, she had been thinking about him all day long, wanting him and craving his touch. He leaned down, brushing her collarbone with his lips, he sucked on gently and a soft moan escaped her lips-gosh, that sound. It drove him wild hearing it and knowing that it was because of him.“You smell like heaven,” his lips were still pressed against her skin. “And I’m starving.”Her knees felt weak and her neck leaned back in permission. “Alex…” This time
