"What does a billionaire want with a broken woman who has nothing left to offer?" Maren whispered while staring at the heavy silver pen in her trembling hand. She refused to sign a document that handed her entire existence over to a complete stranger without understanding the ultimate catch. The paper felt like a death warrant and a salvation all rolled into one terrifying package.

Gideon observed the fierce defiance burning in her hazel eyes and felt a sudden spark of genuine respect for her resilience. He gestured for Colm to guide them toward a secluded stone alcove away from the prying eyes of the courthouse lobby. Maren clutched the contract against her chest and followed them while keeping a wary gaze on Desmond who stood frozen in shock across the room.

"You have something I need to secure my grandfather's estate before the board of directors strips me of my inheritance," Gideon explained in a calm measured voice. "I require a wife and a child to prove I am a stable family man capable of running a global empire. You need endless capital and ruthless legal power to obliterate the man trying to steal your nephew."

Maren searched his slate gray eyes looking for a shred of empathy but found only cold calculating ambition. She realized in that exact moment she was standing in front of an apex predator who viewed human lives as chess pieces. He was offering her a cage made of gold to replace the iron cage Desmond had built around her.

"You are just using an orphaned infant to launch a corporate takeover," Maren accused while a fresh wave of anger tightened her chest. "You do not care about my nephew or the danger Desmond poses to us." She shoved the contract back toward him unwilling to trade her sister's child to another heartless monster.

Colm adjusted his grip on his leather briefcase and watched the exchange with a distinct sense of unease. He knew Gideon possessed a volatile temper when challenged but his boss maintained complete composure. Gideon took a step closer and invaded her personal space with an intense gravitational pull that made Maren lose her breath.

"I care about winning and I care about destroying Desmond because his family has been a plague on mine for three generations," Gideon stated while towering over her small frame. "I will provide a fortress of absolute security for you and the boy because what belongs to me is protected without fail. You will never have to beg a corrupt judge or fear a monster like him ever again."

Maren felt the sheer weight of his conviction wrap around her shattered nerves like a protective shield against the coming storm. She knew she was out of options and out of time because the forty eight hour clock was ticking down to zero. The thought of losing the infant to the man who orchestrated her sister's demise caused a visceral ache of panic to rip through her soul.

"What happens when the board signs over your inheritance and you no longer need a fake family to parade in front of the cameras?" Maren demanded to know while her voice cracked with suppressed emotion under the immense pressure. "Do you just toss us back onto the street when the ink dries on your trust fund documents?" She needed ironclad guarantees before she traded her soul and her future to the devil standing in front of her.

"The contract stipulates you receive a massive financial settlement and permanent legal guardianship of the boy should we dissolve the union," Colm interjected in a smooth professional tone. "We have anticipated every variable to ensure you retain total leverage over the custody battle. Desmond will have zero legal standing to ever approach you again."

Maren traced the embossed lettering on the heavy bond paper and felt the last remaining shreds of her resistance crumble into dust. She looked past Gideon's broad shoulders and saw Desmond pacing across the marble floor with unhinged fury twisting his features. He realized they were plotting a counterstrike and his practiced mask of arrogance was slipping away into raw panic.

"You are a predator Gideon," Maren said while meeting his intense stare with a renewed fire burning in her own eyes. "You are buying a wife to win a war and you are using my desperation to seal the deal in your favor." She gripped the silver pen tighter until her knuckles turned white under the incredible physical strain of her decision.

"I am the only predator capable of keeping you alive Maren," Gideon replied without a single ounce of hesitation or remorse in his deep voice. He watched the realization settle over her features knowing she understood the brutal truth of their inescapable situation. He felt an inexplicable possessive urge to shield her from the horrors of the world outside his massive corporate empire.

Heavy footsteps echoed like gunshots against the stone floor as Desmond broke away from his lawyers and charged toward their secluded alcove. His face was flushed with violent rage as he realized the ultimate prize was slipping through his fingers. He could not fathom a reality where a broke barista managed to outsmart a billionaire titan.

"What kind of illegal backdoor deal are you brokering with my family Gideon?" Desmond roared while spit flew from his lips in a fit of unhinged anger. "She is broke and she is insane and you will never convince a judge to overturn my legal custody ruling!" He reached out to grab Maren by the arm to drag her away from the table.

Gideon moved faster than a strike of lightning and intercepted the attack before Desmond could even brush against her sleeve. He shoved Desmond backward with immense physical force that sent the man stumbling into the stone wall. The air in the alcove cracked with lethal tension as Gideon prepared to break every bone in his rival's body.

Maren watched the explosion of violence and realized the sheer power she now held in her hands. She turned her attention away from the chaos and placed the heavy contract down on the marble ledge. She felt a bizarre sense of liberation wash over her spirit as she pressed the silver pen against the dotted line.

"I am not your family anymore Desmond," Maren declared with a voice that rang crystal clear over the commotion in the room. She stared dead into his panicked eyes and signed her full name with aggressive finality. The war had officially begun and she was ready to watch him burn.

How does a person prepare to sell their soul to the world before the sun even breaches the horizon? Maren wondered as loud footsteps echoed down the marble hallway outside the master suite. The mahogany door swung open to reveal Colm leading a squad of stern professionals wielding garment bags and makeup kits, while Gideon stood in the threshold projecting a presence that demanded obedience from everyone in the room. "We have twenty minutes to transform your appearance into a flawless billionaire wife before the morning news cycles pick up the court filings Desmond submitted," Colm stated with professional detachment. He gestured for the stylist team to descend on Maren like a pack of wolves evaluating fresh meat. Maren clutched her cotton pajamas and took a hesitant step backward, a surge of raw vulnerability washing over her. "Do not fight them, Maren. We need the public to believe you are accustomed to this level of wealth and privilege," Gideon ordered while pouring himself a cu

Maren threw the silk blanket aside and scrambled back against the tufted headboard, her heart hammering in her chest. She refused to cower before the silhouette standing over the wooden crib like a predator in the dark. "Are you out of your mind, standing over us like some sort of sociopath?" she demanded, her voice trembling from the lingering terror of her nightmare.Gideon did not flinch at the accusation, nor did he step into the light spilling from the massive windows. He stood rigid, shoulders squared, a glowing phone in his right hand. "You were screaming in your sleep and fighting invisible ghosts while I was dealing with a genuine crisis," he countered in a low, measured tone that carried no warmth.Maren slid off the mattress and planted her bare feet on the cold hardwood floor to ground her spinning thoughts. She marched toward him, protective instinct overriding common sense, and stood between his towering frame and the sleeping infant. "I do not care what corporate crisis

"We survived the board but I will sleep on the cold hardwood floor before I let you touch me again Gideon," Maren declared the moment the heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind them. She clutched the sleeping infant tighter against her chest while backing away from the towering billionaire.Gideon stood near the entrance and unbuttoned his suit jacket with a deliberate grace that made her breath catch in her throat. He felt the residual heat of their forced embrace still burning into his skin but he masked his biological reaction behind a wall of pure ice. "Remember to breathe deep and let me handle the interrogation when those doors open," Gideon advised in a low voice that resonated through the confined space of the ascending elevator. He watched Maren clutch the sleeping infant against her chest while her knuckles turned stark white from the immense pressure. She nodded in absolute silence as the polished metal doors slid apart with a soft chime to reveal a sprawling penthouse living room.Five older men in dark bespoke suits sat around a massive glass table with expressions of profound skepticism carved into their faces. They represented the generational wealth of his grandfather and they held the power to strip Gideon of his entire empire with a single vote. Maren stepped out of the elevator and felt the hostile weight of their stares attempting to crush her spirit into dust."You expect us to believe you eloped with a destitute woman hours before a major corporate transition Gideon?" the lead executor demanded without offering a b

Two security operatives materialized and grabbed Desmond by his tailored shoulders with incredible physical force.
