The heavy wooden gavel struck the sounding block with a sickening crack that echoed through the freezing courtroom. Maren felt all the air vanish from her lungs as the crushing reality of the ruling settled over her trembling shoulders. The magistrate had just handed her infant nephew over to a monster pending a final forty eight hour review.

Desmond sat two tables away and allowed a smug smile to spread across his handsome face. He felt a deep surge of vindication knowing he had finally crushed the defiant woman who dared to challenge his authority. He did not care about the infant but he relished the absolute power he now held over the entire situation.

The judge shuffled his papers and dismissed the court without offering a single glance of sympathy toward the defense table. Maren stared at the empty wooden chair next to her where her sister should have been sitting. A profound sense of grief twisted inside her stomach as she realized she had failed the only promise she ever made.

She shoved her chair back and practically ran into the sprawling marble lobby to escape the suffocating atmosphere. Maren clutched her worn canvas tote bag against her chest while struggling to draw a single complete breath. Her vision blurred as tears of pure rage and profound failure threatened to spill over her eyelashes.

Footsteps echoed against the polished marble floor before a tall imposing shadow blocked her path to the exit doors. Desmond stood there adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke suit with an air of total arrogant superiority. He looked down at her small frame and felt a twisted sense of pleasure at the raw terror swimming in her hazel eyes.

"You should have taken the cash settlement when I offered it last month Maren," Desmond said with a cruel laugh. "Now you walk away with nothing and I take my rightful heir home." He stepped closer until Maren was forced to back up against the cold stone pillar of the courthouse lobby.

Maren tightened her grip on her bag and forced herself to meet his dark calculating gaze. "You do not even want him," Maren whispered while her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. "You are just doing this to punish me because my sister tried to leave you."

Desmond chuckled and the sound sent a sharp shiver of absolute disgust down her spine. He knew she was right but admitting the truth would ruin the flawless public image he spent years building. He wanted the boy solely to secure his position within his generational family trust.

"I am going to send the boy to an exclusive academy overseas the moment the final papers are signed," Desmond threatened in a dark menacing pitch. "You and your sister will be nothing more than a forgotten memory in his mind before he learns to talk." He leaned closer to ensure every single word inflicted maximum psychological damage.

A sob ripped through Maren's throat as she realized the true depth of his cruelty. She had spent every dime and every ounce of her energy fighting him but the justice system favored billionaires over broken families. She was out of money and out of time to save the baby from a lifetime of emotional torment.

Desmond reached out to touch her face just to prove he could cross any boundary he desired. Maren squeezed her eyes shut and braced for the contact while a wave of sheer helplessness washed over her spirit. The contact never came because the heavy brass doors of the courthouse swung open with explosive force.

A sudden chill swept through the massive lobby that made even Desmond pause and take a step back. Gideon walked into the room radiating a suffocating aura of lethal authority and absolute command. He moved with the predatory grace of a man who owned the world and dismantled his enemies for sport.

Colm walked a step behind Gideon carrying a heavy leather briefcase that held enough legal ammunition to destroy empires. Gideon did not even glance at Desmond as he closed the distance between them. His sharp gray eyes locked onto Maren and pinned her in place with a gaze that burned right through her panic.

Desmond straightened his posture and tried to mask the sudden spike of genuine fear tightening his chest. "Gideon," Desmond sneered while trying to sound far more confident than he actually felt. "To what do I owe the displeasure of seeing my biggest corporate rival in a family courthouse?"

Gideon ignored the man completely and stopped mere inches away from where Maren stood trembling against the marble pillar. He felt a strange spark of intense focus ignite in his chest as he studied the defiant fire still burning in her tearful eyes. Colm stepped forward in complete silence and opened the briefcase to retrieve a thick stack of legal bond paper.

"You have forty eight hours before the final decree is signed and the child is lost forever," Gideon said in a deep commanding voice. "You have no financial assets and no legal representation capable of fighting his holding company." He took the thick document from Colm and held it out toward her shaking hands.

Maren stared at the paper and then looked up at the towering stranger who had just shattered the standoff. She felt an overwhelming sense of confusion mixing with a dangerous flicker of blind hope. Desmond stepped forward with a loud angry demand to know exactly what was happening in his presence.

"Sign your name on the dotted line right now Maren," Gideon instructed while his gaze remained unbroken and intense. "You will take my last name and my protection in exchange for the survival of the child." He pulled a silver pen from his pocket and held it out to her like a lifeline suspended over a blazing fire.

Maren reached out with trembling fingers and took the heavy document to read the bold print across the top page. It was a binding marriage contract drafted to merge their lives together in total irrevocable matrimony. She realized instantly that Gideon was offering her a permanent war against the man who destroyed her family.

"Sign it," Gideon whispered while the air around them crackled with an undeniable physical tension. "Sign it and I promise you will watch me tear his entire world apart piece by piece.”

Never build a fortress around a wounded heart unless you are prepared to watch the walls trap you inside with a predator. The sprawling penthouse became a tense battleground of avoided glances and unspoken desire over the next twenty four hours. Maren navigated the pristine rooms with deliberate caution to avoid the magnetic pull of the billionaire tracking her every movement. The memory of his dark confession hung heavy in the air and made every shared space feel dangerously small. Gideon remained inside the secure wing working on his corporate strategies while giving her the physical distance she demanded. He did not issue any new commands or attempt to close the gap between them after their explosive confrontation. The quiet atmosphere felt less like a truce and more like a predator waiting in the shadows for the perfect moment to strike. Maren found herself looking for his towering frame every time she entered a room despite her fierce desire to maintain her independence. She ha

  • RUTHLESS   Chapter 34

The sharp sound of the slap echoed through the quiet glass castle like a sudden clap of thunder. Maren pulled her hand back while her fingers burned from the fierce impact against his hard jaw. Gideon did not blink or turn his head away from the strike. He accepted the physical blow with a chilling stillness that made her racing heart skip a vital beat. The tall billionaire stood his ground and absorbed her fury without displaying a single ounce of retaliation. A faint red mark bloomed across his tanned skin to mirror the intense violence of her fractured emotions. "You have every right to strike me for making a unilateral decision regarding your body and your public image," Gideon murmured in a dangerously calm tone. He took a slow step forward and closed the tiny gap she had tried to create between them. "I will stand here and let you break your hands against my chest if it helps you process the anger you feel right now." "I do not want to strike you again because physical violen

"You stripped away my dignity and broadcast my deepest vulnerability to millions of strangers without asking for a single ounce of my consent," Maren shouted the exact moment the heavy metallic doors of the private elevator slid open. Gideon stepped into the pristine foyer wearing the tailored suit he wore during the televised broadcast, though the dark confidence radiating from his broad shoulders felt far heavier now. He walked toward the center of the spacious living room with slow predatory strides while his slate gray eyes locked onto her flushed face. "I secured the permanent safety of your family and destroyed the man who tortured your sister for years," Gideon countered with a booming voice that vibrated through the high ceilings of the penthouse. "I used the exact weapon required to dismantle his public narrative before a judge could issue a warrant to remove the boy from this home. You get to keep your nephew because I made a tactical decision on that courthouse plaza." "Y

A profound silence fell over the crowded concrete plaza as hundreds of journalists opened the digital file delivered straight to their mobile devices. The chaotic shouting faded into a dense quiet while the glowing screens reflected against their stunned faces. Maren watched the television broadcast with her pulse roaring in her ears as the media digested the secret weapon Gideon had just unleashed. "What kind of forged document did you just send to these reporters to save your failing reputation," Desmond demanded while trying to look over the shoulder of a nearby cameraman. "You cannot distract the public from a sworn witness testimony with more corporate lies and fabricated paperwork." "I did not send them paperwork because reading legal clauses will never convince a room full of skeptics," Gideon replied with a dark satisfaction resonating in his chest. "I sent them undeniable visual evidence of what happens when my wife and I are alone behind closed doors." Maren leaned closer

How much money does it take to buy the silence of a man who swore an oath to protect your family? Maren watched the television screen in total disbelief as the disgraced guard adjusted the microphone and glared at the billionaire standing mere feet away. The man she had tried to protect from termination just days ago was now the very weapon Desmond planned to use to sever her from her nephew forever. "I worked inside that penthouse and I saw the truth behind closed doors," the former guard declared to the sea of flashing cameras and shouting journalists. "They pretend to be a loving couple for the cameras but they sleep in separate bedrooms and barely speak to each other when the public is not watching. Mister Cole fired me because I knew too much about their fraudulent arrangement and he wanted to silence my testimony." The press corps erupted into a frenzy of hostile questions and accusations that drowned out the ambient noise of the city plaza. Journalists who had praised Gideon

  • RUTHLESS   Chapter 30

"Turn the volume up right now before he destroys everything we fought so hard to protect," Maren demanded with a trembling voice while her eyes remained glued to the glowing television screen. She clutched the edge of the velvet sofa as Desmond approached the wooden podium with a triumphant smirk plastered across his handsome face. Gwen scrambled to grab the remote control and amplified the sound just as the corrupt billionaire tapped the microphone to command the attention of the swarming journalists. "Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I stand before you today to expose a massive fraud perpetrated against the family court system and the general public," Desmond announced in a booming voice that echoed across the municipal steps. He held a thick stack of papers high in the air for the flashing cameras to capture the bold legal text printed on the front page. "Gideon Cole claims to be a devoted husband, but I possess the physical contract proving his sudden marriage is nothing more t
