•ANEIRA•

I opened the closet and took my jacket before slamming it closed.

“I don’t want to marry Rafael Sterling, Mother. Chris asked me to marry him, and I agreed. I’ve been with him for two years, and I won’t throw that away.”

"I am not asking you to throw anything away, but this is the only way for us to survive, Aneira," my mother answered as she closed the door behind her. "Your father's medical bills are increasing every day, and he needs to go for surgery."

I shook my head. She knew we had money in the family savings account to pay for my father’s medical bills.

"We've been surviving just fine," I scoffed. "If I marry Rafael, I'll have to forget about all the dreams I have for my life."

"Your sister's marriage to him was supposed to clear all our debts, but with her gone and your father in the hospital, we won't be able to pay off what we owe him. You know we've been struggling ever since your father was laid off from his job. Rafael is the only person who will pay your college fees, and you will study whatever you want. Isn't that what you want?"

"It doesn’t matter what I want, but I won't marry Rafael!" I sneered, putting on my jacket.

My mother leaned forward. “You will marry him in honor of your late sister, Aneira. Or do I need to remind you that her death was your fault?”

I froze. Even in death, she favored Narra. I had always been the shadow twin, the one dismissed as ordinary while Narra shone.

“The accident wasn’t my fault! Narra missed the stop sign because—”

“Because of you,” my mother snapped. “Your carelessness killed her. If you weren’t my daughter, I would have had you arrested for taking my only daughter from me.”

The words crushed me. My own mother, my supposed protector, had labeled me a killer.

“You’ve made it clear my whole life,” I replied, my hands trembling as I gripped my phone. “Narra was always your favorite. But I won’t marry Rafael—not for her, not for anyone.”

A predator’s smile tugged at her lips. “If you refuse, I will tell the police you killed Narra. You were jealous, plotting, and then you took her life.”

Tears burned my eyes. “I loved her. She was my sister. You know I would never harm her.”

Her voice dropped, cold and deliberate. “You will be arrested, Aneira. Only Rafael can save your father. Only Rafael can pay for his surgery. If you care about your father, you will do what is necessary.”

"Don't bring my father into this, Mom," I sneered. "You know we have money to pay for his medical bills. And besides, I have a job and will buy us groceries and electricity."

"Your father has liver cancer, and we've been managing the symptoms with the little money we had in our savings," she answered. "Do you think we could've managed everything in the house and the medical bills with fifty thousand dollars? The surgery will cost us half a million. Will your job be able to pay the bills?"

The air pressed in around me.

My chest tightened. "He has liver cancer?" Tears blurred my vision. "Why didn’t you tell me?"

"Your sister knew, and that's why she was marrying Rafael," she answered. "She wanted to do everything she could to save him. But if you don't want to marry Rafael in her place, your father will die, and his death will be on your hands as well."

I swallowed hard, and before the tears in my eyes could fall, I turned to the door and left.

I wiped my tears as I drove to the bar.

Chris had always been my anchor, the one person who truly saw me. Our plan to leave California and start over had been my only hope.

“Hey, Cobra. Is Chris in today?” I asked when I entered the bar.

“Yeah, he’s in his office. Looking fine for your papa, mamacita,” the bartender teased.

I forced a laugh, trying to ignore the lump in my throat.

I reached his office door and paused. Laughter and a woman’s giggle spilled into the hallway. My stomach twisted.

I opened the door and froze. Chris was on top of her, pulling away only to smirk at me.

“What is going on?” My voice shook.

He straightened casually. “You should have joined us instead of ruining the fun. Anyway, what do you want?”

I could barely breathe. “We've been together for two years, and you asked me to marry you a week ago. How could you do this to me?" My voice broke. "We had plans, Chris!"

He cut me off, his smile cruel. “Plans? Sweetheart, I planned nothing with you. You were convenient. And her? She’s worth every penny.”

My chest tightened, my heart hammering. Betrayal and heartbreak collided, leaving me hollow.

Every promise, every dream, every hope I had placed in him vanished in an instant.

Without thinking, I yanked off my engagement ring and hurled it at him. It clinked against the desk.

"You should've kept it and traded it for a few bucks, love!" Chris chuckled.

I turned and fled. Tears streaked my face, but I refused to look back.

Cobra called after me, but I couldn’t stop. My chest ached. I didn't expect that Chris, the man who had professed his love for me for two years, would turn on me when I needed him the most.

***

When I got home, my mother was on the phone, her expression unreadable. I wiped my tears, took a deep breath, and faced her.

“I’ll marry Rafael Sterling,” I said, my voice steady and cold. “On one condition.”

Her brow arched, curiosity flickering in her eyes. “And what is that?”

“It’s a contract. Five years. After that, I am free of him.”

•ANEIRA•"What are you talking about, Polly?" Rafael scoffed, looking at me and then back to her. "This is Narra Colombo. Do you think I would marry someone and not know who they are?""Oh, is she truly Narra?" She laughed, leaning closer while Amari stood beside my mother so that she could stop her from running. "Perhaps you should ask her what her name is.""Her name is Narra, Polly," he growled. "What are you doing here with Amari?""That should be the least of your worries, brother," Polly answered as she crossed her arms across her chest. "Instead of asking me what I am doing here with Amari, you must ask your wife why her mother moved to a different location after your wedding."Rafael slowly turned to me, and I could see the anger that was brewing behind his eyes. He didn't want to believe her, but he knew she was right."Who are you?" he asked, taking a step back from me."What do you mean, Rafael?" I gasped. "I am Narra Colombo. Why would I lie about my identity to you?""Oh,

•ANEIRA•"Narra," Rafael's voice called behind me in the hallway when I was heading to my room, and I stopped walking.I kept my head down with my hands clasped in front of my stomach. My heart pounded in my chest, thinking he was about to question me about the things he had heard from my mother."The doctor is here, and he's waiting with your mother in the guest room upstairs," he informed me when he reached my side."Oh," I breathed, realizing that he meant every word he had said to me before. He didn't want this baby, and I couldn't believe that it hadn't crossed his mind that he was the father."Of course, Mr. Sterling," I answered, nodding. "I will get ready right away." I turned to walk away when he grabbed my wrist and held me back."Once this procedure is done, there will be no going back," he muttered. "So it will be wise for you to tell me if I am the father of the child."I looked at him, realizing that he thought the baby was his, but my mind was already made up. He had ta

•AMARI•"Stop slamming the door!" My mother shouted as soon as I walked inside the house. "If Kaven wakes up, you will put him back to sleep!"I rolled my eyes and headed upstairs to my room. •RAFAEL•I woke up with my pillow drenched that morning. I sat up on the bed and breathed, trying to remind myself that it was only a dream, just as it had been for the past twenty years. It was always the same dream, and with the same outcome. My parents always ended up dying. They died horrible deaths every time the dream returned each night. It felt like a shadow that wouldn't leave me alone. No matter what I did, or wherever I was, the dream always returned, and each time it did, my vengeance for my parents intensified.Narra and her mother were still alive. Her mother was still alive, while mine wasn't."Baby, are you okay?" Amari asked when she woke up and found me sitting on the bed.I looked at her and rolled my eyes. I didn't know how many times I had told her to go home, but she still insisted on staying, even though I wanted nothing to do with her anymore.Whatever happened between us was supposed to last one night. To make Narra jealous, but she wouldn't leave anymore."I'

•POLLY•"Have you talked to your brother about the business contract we talked about?" Allen asked as he collapsed on the bed next to me.He had just fucked me and the last thing I wanted was to talk about business, or my brother who seemed adamant to make Narra pay for her father’s crimes. She was the constant living reminder of what my brother and I lost when Ethan killed our parents in cold blood.I was still plotting a way to make her pay since Antonio was hesitating, probably enjoying cumming inside her pussy."Ugh, Allen," I groaned as I turned and faced the other direction. "Can we not talk about my brother?""You and your brother made plans that—""That's the thing, Allen," I groaned as I turned and looked at him. "You made business plans with him and not me. I can't talk with my father about something that's between the two of you."I turned and looked at the clock near my pedestal counter and got off the bed."I think you should leave and figure out a plan about how you'll a

•ANEIRA•I shook my head as I looked at my mother and couldn’t believe what she had just said to Rafael. I knew if I told him the truth about my identity to get back at her, it would backfire.“How could you say something like that to me? I loved my sister and wouldn’t have done anything to risk her life. She was as important to me as she was to you. How could I have killed my twin sister?”“That’s not what I called you here for, Emma. The deal was to give me your daughter to spare your life, and that was done. Doctor Xander will be here tomorrow morning, so I want you to be here as well, to see the consequences of your daughter’s deceit,” Rafael answered before he walked to the door and left.My mother and I looked at each other for a few seconds before she broke the silence. She closed the gap between us and chuckled.“My goodness, Aneira,” she shook her head. “If I had known Rafael had turned you into his maid, I would’ve laughed all the way from home to see you. You weren’t joking
