“Why is she here, Rafael?” Polly asked after pulling me aside during lunch with Narra. “I married her. She’s my wife. That’s why she’s here.” “Your wife? Are you crazy? After what her father did to our family, you married her daughter? Why?” She frowned. “I know what I’m doing, and I have a plan. You must trust me, Polly.” “God, no. You must get rid of her before I do something to her because I won’t tolerate this. Her father took everything from us. He ruined our lives.” “Narra Colombo is our key.” Polly looked at me and scoffed. “You better not sleep with her, or I will kill her while you watch,” she snarled before she walked away. I shook my head and went to the dining room, and found Narra clearing the table. She stopped and turned around when she heard me approaching behind her. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend your sister. Is she mad at me?” She asked. “No, she’s okay. Next time I invite you for lunch with her, keep your mouth shut and remember your place.” She nodded before she took the plates and left the room. My sister Polly was stubborn and wouldn’t listen to anything I would say about my marriage to Narra. She wouldn’t even understand why I married Narra. My cell phone rang when I got to my home office. I sat in the chair behind my desk and leaned back. “Sir, we’ve received the stock from Montelli, and he will expect to see you at his club. Tonight at 8 PM.” I hung up the call and informed my men to be ready at 8 PM. I didn’t want to be unprepared for the meeting when Montelli might have planned something against me. *** “Are you going to show me off to your business associates so they will laugh at me?” She asked when the car drove to a stop outside Montelli’s nightclub. “You’re here because Montelli knows we got married a few days ago, and I want him to meet you.” “Your sister told me I don’t belong in your home because of what my father did. Is it the money that he owed you?” I looked at her and scoffed. “Let’s go inside. I hate being late to my meetings.” I hopped out of the car and opened the door for her. When we walked in, a bouncer directed us to Montelli’s VIP room. There were strippers, waiters, and drinks inside. Narra asked to use the bathroom while I sat with Montelli and concluded our business. My bodyguard placed the briefcase of cash on the counter, and Montelli’s men counted the money. When they were done and confirmed it was all there, Montelli and I stood up from our chairs and shook hands. “You are a good businessman, Sterling. Hopefully, we will work on more projects together. I am particularly interested in the new logistics business you’ve established. Think about it, and I might chip in a good amount of investment.” “We will talk, Montelli,” I smirked before I turned around and walked down the stairs to the ground floor, and that’s when I saw her. “Let me go, Chris. Let me go,” she mumbled as I approached them and grabbed the guy by his shirt. “You heard her, boy. Leave her alone unless you want me to break your legs,” I threatened him, pissed that he dared to approach her while she was with me. “You will break my legs?” He laughed. “Did she tell you she was moaning my name two weeks ago? Aneira is mine.” ‘Aneira?’ I thought as I looked at her, confused because Narra’s mother told me that Aneira died a week before Narra and I got married. “He’s mistaking me for my late sister. I don’t know him, Rafael. Please, let’s leave this place.” She looked at me, and I turned and looked at the guy before I let him go with a warning. When we got inside the car, I pressed my hand on my thigh, fighting the urge to call Jaxson to sort out the guy at the club. For his sake, I hoped I would never bump into him ever again, or he would be a dead man. When we got home, I closed the door behind Narra before I pushed her against the wall and placed my hand on her neck. “Were you involved with him before?” “No, Rafael. I don’t — I don’t know him.” She was panting, her forehead sweating as she looked at me in horror. “He called you Aneira." “Aneira’s my late twin sister. We looked alike, and the guy thought I was her. He doesn’t know that my sister had died. You must believe me.” “Fine,” I released my grip on her neck. “You’re my wife, and I don’t want to see another man speaking to you or even looking at you. Do you understand?” She nodded before she hurried past me and went to her room down the hallway. She was sniffling when she disappeared into the hallway. *** Later that evening, after dinner, I headed upstairs to my room when I heard a commotion down the hallway. “You’re clumsy and ugly. My brother can never be your husband, even in your grave. Do you hear me? This whole charade will be over soon when I make him see he can’t be married to the daughter of our enemy.” “Why do you hate me? What have I done to you and your brother?” “You shouldn’t be here, bastard!” “Polly, ahh!” Narra screamed after I heard a slap. I rushed to them and got shocked when I found Polly cornering Narra, who had her hand on her cheek. “Polly, what’s going on here?” “This thing shouldn’t be here, Rafael. When is she leaving?” I grabbed Narra’s hand and stood in front of her. “Don’t lay your hand on her again, little sister. Do you hear me? Narra is my wife, and I will handle my marriage with her the way I want.” “I see,” she scoffed. “If she doesn’t raise our parents from the dead, she will join them,” she huffed before she walked away.•ANEIRA•I shook my head as I looked at my mother and couldn’t believe what she had just said to Rafael. I knew if I told him the truth about my identity to get back at her, it would backfire.“How could you say something like that to me? I loved my sister and wouldn’t have done anything to risk her life. She was as important to me as she was to you. How could I have killed my twin sister?”“That’s not what I called you here for, Emma. The deal was to give me your daughter to spare your life, and that was done. Doctor Xander will be here tomorrow morning, so I want you to be here as well, to see the consequences of your daughter’s deceit,” Rafael answered before he walked to the door and left.My mother and I looked at each other for a few seconds before she broke the silence. She closed the gap between us and chuckled.“My goodness, Aneira,” she shook her head. “If I had known Rafael had turned you into his maid, I would’ve laughed all the way from home to see you. You weren’t joking
•ANEIRA•“Leave her, Amari.” Rafael stepped closer, and I felt a sense of relief washing over me.Amari would’ve slapped and beaten me up if he hadn’t shown up.“What do you mean I should leave her, babe?” She snarled. “Did you hear the things she said to me? She insulted me, and I won’t take that.”“Leave her, and I will take care of it. She’s working for me and will answer to me. I don’t want you near her, Amari. Do you understand?”My heart skipped a beat when Rafael protected me from her. Even with his hardened heart, I couldn’t believe Rafael didn’t want anyone to harm me.“She’s nothing but a slave. I must discipline her as your woman!” she shot back. “Do you want her to continue talking shit to my face?”“Don’t make me chase you out of my house.”Amari looked at me and scoffed. While I stood there with my head lowered, waiting for Rafael to move me to another post because of her.“She can’t stay here, Rafael. If she stays, it means I leave. So, you decide.” Amari gave him an ul
•AMARI•“I want you to find Narra’s mother and bring her to the house. Make sure that she gets here alive, Finn.” Rafael hung up the call and paced in his home office, making another call.I walked in and closed the door behind me.I leaned toward him and wrapped my arms around his waist, and he didn’t even flinch as he lifted the phone to his ear.“I want Doctor Xander to come to my house tomorrow morning. Tell him to be here before 10:00 in the morning. Yes, good.” He hung up the call before he slipped my hands from him and went to his desk.“Is everything?” I cleared my throat and leaned toward him. “You were not in bed when I woke up this morning. And also, you never came to bed last night, Rafael. What’s going on?”I was worried because I thought Rafael and I were getting somewhere. He brought me back to his house and was treating me like his woman again, and I feared losing that.“Can I be left alone? I have things that need my attention, and I don’t want to be disturbed,” he re
•ANEIRA•“Let her go, Rafael!” I snapped. “Let her go!”“Who is the father of your baby?” he asked, and my stomach twisted.‘Damn Amari.’ She was bent on ruining things for me and had convinced Rafael that I was pregnant. He probably believed it when she told him I ran to the bathroom to vomit. If Rafael found out I was carrying his child, he wouldn’t let me go since I had proposed to bear him a child for my freedom, which he made clear he wouldn’t grant. So, I didn’t want to have his child when he would keep me in the house and never let me go.“I told you and Amari that I’m not pregnant. What more do you want from me?” I shot back. “Sandra did nothing to you, so let her go.”“I’m sorry, Narra,” Sandra chimed in. “I told him about the pregnancy test,” she confessed, and my heart sank. Shit.“I’m not—”Rafael leaned toward me, his eyes locked into mine as I slammed my back against the wall and gasped. “Then prove it,” he cut in. “I’m taking you to a doctor, and if you’re pregnant, she
•NARRA•“Oh, Judith. You have such a kind heart to call and check on me. The death of my dearest Aneira has been so heavy in my heart. My life has no meaning anymore, and as if the world couldn’t be cruel enough, they took my only daughter, Narra, and married her off to that beastly man, Rafael Sterling.” My mother sobbed over the phone, and I rolled my eyes as I sat beside her on the couch.“Good heavens,” Judith gasped on the other end of the line. “Rafael would tear her apart. He won’t let her go until she’s dead. You should get your daughter back, Emma. What about your husband? Is he well? I noticed you haven’t been home for two weeks now. Your house is as quiet as a grave.”I saw my mother roll her eyes before she continued her performance. “My poor husband is late, Judith. Rafael has refused to give me his body, and I’ll never know where he was buried. My life is a melody of sadness and grief.”“Don’t worry, Emma. God will see you through and will bring your daughter back to saf
•ANEIRA•“Are you pregnant, Narra?” Rafael’s voice was calm, but his stare could’ve split me open. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. The man standing before me, the one who made me his maid after he got me pregnant, was now asking if I was pregnant.“I’m not,” I answered. “Miss Amari assumed I was because I ran to the bathroom to vomit. I must have eaten something bad.”I prayed he would believe me. That they would both just let me go before I would say things that would get me in trouble.“Are you calling me a liar?” Amari’s voice cut through the room, sharp and venomous.I flinched. My cheek still stung from the last time she’d raised her hand on me.“I’m not pregnant,” I repeated, forcing myself to meet her eyes. “My mother wouldn’t have allowed me to marry Rafael if I were.”“She’s lying,” Amari snapped, pointing her finger at me. “You should move her to one of your clubs, Rafael. Let her scrub floors where she belongs because if your sister finds out she’s pregnant, she’ll think
