Chapter 1

Molly stared at me like I'd lost it.

"Daphne, don't buy her act. Those cuts were made with a craft knife. She did it on purpose—"

Before she could finish, a bridal shop employee stepped out.

Molly looked at the bridesmaid dress in her hands, her eyes going red. "The wedding dress is already wrecked. What's even the point of trying this on now...?"

I squeezed her shoulder. "It's fine. Go try it on. The wedding's still happening."

The second Molly walked away, Gigi spoke up.

"But a new dress will take at least a month. Your wedding with Mr. Jablon is next week, right?

"This is all my fault. I should've been more careful..."

Mason gave her a small smile.

"It's not a big deal. Don't blame yourself."

Not a big deal.

Don't blame yourself.

The words echoed in my head as I looked at him.

He wasn't standing next to me.

Gigi was.

He never took his eyes off her. There was even a hint of a smile on his face.

As for my wedding dress—the one slashed to pieces—he hadn't looked at it once since we walked into the bridal shop.

Molly walked out in the dress.

The sight of her finally made me smile.

"Molly, you look gorgeous.

"When I get married, you have to wear the hairpiece I gave you with that."

She let out a quiet huff. One look at Mason and Gigi, and the words died on her lips.

The sales associate rolled over a rack of wedding dresses for me to try on.

Mason walked over, automatically reaching for my purse.

I pulled it away and set it on the floor instead.

He stopped short.

Not long after I pulled the fitting room curtain closed, Mason spoke from outside.

"The first dress you picked didn't really suit you.

"It showed off all the wrong places. A mermaid style would look way better.

"So one dress got ruined. Is it really that big of a deal?"

I didn't answer.

A second later, he pulled the curtain open and stepped inside.

He zipped up the back of my dress and let out a quiet sigh.

"It's just a dress.

"Try to be a little more understanding. Don't make such a big deal out of it."

Be more understanding.

There it was again.

When Gigi screwed up the guest list for our engagement party.

When she got drunk at the party and hung all over Mason.

When she showed up at my mom's hospital room without asking and brought mangoes that triggered her allergy.

Every single time, Mason brushed it off with that same detached tone.

"Gigi's new. She doesn't have much experience. Be more understanding."

I shrugged off the arms he tried to wrap around me and let out a slow breath.

"Can you leave?"

Mason watched me for a few seconds.

Then he nodded and walked out.

"Take a minute to calm down.

"I'm driving Gigi back. The office is far, and getting there on her own would be a hassle."

After he left, I sank onto the fitting room couch. The strapless bodice was so tight I could barely breathe.

Molly broke the silence.

"What's going on with you two? You've spent a whole year planning this wedding.

"What is he even thinking?"

I looked down, running my fingers over the stiff fabric as my mind drifted back to the hospital a month ago.

The doctors had said Mom probably wouldn't make it.

She lay in the hospital bed with tears in her eyes.

Kurt and I had always been close. But there was never anything romantic between us.After he became Mason's business rival, he came to see me once.He tossed a file onto the table."There's a corporate war coming. When it's over, only one of us will still be standing."Leave him. He's going to lose."I stared at him. "And you're so sure because...?"Kurt gave a faint smile."Because I'll do what he won't. He's a spoiled rich kid."He can't beat me."After a beat, I pushed the file—and the lucrative offer inside it—back across the table."No."I'm not leaving him just because he might lose."Back then, I could still smile. I could still joke with Kurt."Unless he cheats, stops loving me, or we just fall out of love someday."Kurt clicked his tongue."I'll never understand people in love."After that day, we stopped seeing each other.I didn't know if that conversation meant I'd chosen a side—or ended our friendship. All I knew was that whenever Kurt visited Mom, he ma

"Honey, why are you looking at another guy on our wedding day?"I froze. Then I quickly whispered, "Sorry."I looked up and slipped my arm back through Kurt's.My eyes drifted to the audience.Mom sat there with tears streaming down her face. She looked at me with nothing but relief and warmth.I gave her the biggest smile I could. At the same time, I quietly exhaled.Thank goodness.Thank goodness I'd asked Kurt to play the groom. He was the only reason Mom had accepted the last-minute change of groom so easily. What I never expected......was that the second I asked him, he said yes.***After the wedding, I took Mom back to the hospital. My phone had been buzzing nonstop. I didn't check it until she was settled and I stepped into the hallway.A flood of messages popped up.Most were congratulations.A few weren't.I opened Molly's first.[Molly: Is it really okay for us to do this? Colorful streamers fluttered outside the hotel. "Mason, come on. You were together for eight years. Are you really going to let Daphne show up at the wedding by herself?""Seriously. Enough already. What if she actually marries someone else?"The more they talked, the more annoyed Mason got."Marry who?" he snapped. "She's taking this way too far."I'd like to see how she plans to pull this off."Mason stormed out, the nightclub door slamming behind him.The second he stepped outside, he ran into Gigi."Mr. Jablon! Why didn't you tell me you were here? I've been looking all over for you."Mason frowned but didn't answer.Gigi followed him to his car and slipped into the passenger seat like she belonged there. Her voice turned soft and sugary. "Even if Ms. Devlin's getting married, you don't have to drink over her."Besides, someone like Ms. Devlin... if she's gone, maybe that's for the best—""Maybe what?"Mason cut her off.His voice was low, edged with unmistakable irritation.Gigi froze, then hurriedly softened her

Mason's face went rigid.Almost on instinct, he grabbed the invitation from my hand and read it over again and again. Then he tossed it onto the table with a cold laugh."Enough."This is just another stunt to make me give in, isn't it?"I'll admit it."For a second, you almost had me fooled."I didn't say a word. The doctors and nurses rushed in.I helped them lift my mom back onto the bed, then followed the doctor out of the room.As I passed him, Mason grabbed my arm on instinct."Daphne..."I pulled free.Without looking back, I walked away.My mom was out of danger, but after examining her, the doctor let out a quiet sigh."At most, she has two months."My hand shook around the medical report.Mom gently patted it."Daphne, don't be sad."I'm not in pain.
