Chapter 6: A glimmer of hope

Anita sat in the back seat of the car as her personal security drove her home. She kept fidgeting and looking through the window all through the journey. Alexander's face and the scene that played out a few moments ago kept replaying in her head over and over again. She was still in a place of uncertainty about whether Alexander had recognized her as the woman he had a one-night stand with or not. But then, if he did, why did he not say anything about it? Or if he didn't, why was he that way toward her?

The second question was not a topic of continuous reflection since Anita had come to notice that he was like that towards every other person.

But then what if he knew and was waiting for the right time to say it? Or what if he eventually found out in the course of her trying to seduce him?

Anita was torn between her desire to seduce him and her fear of him discovering her true identity.

And then Lawrence seemed to be another stumbling block to her chances of getting close to Alex and getting what she wanted from him.

His showing interest in her would only do more harm to her mission by sending Alex even farther from her, thereby making it even more difficult to achieve her aim. What was she going to do about him if he continued showing interest in her?

How would she handle him?

Anita was so carried away by her thoughts that she did not realize when the car pulled into her driver until it stopped.

"We are here, ma'am." The perturbed security man, who was watching her face through the front mirror all through the drive, announced

Only then did Anita realize how long she had been absent mentally from the physical world.

"Thank you." She spoke as she stepped out of the car and walked into the luxurious apartment.

Angie was working on her laptop when Anita walked into the house. She slightly looked up from her laptop and shook her head to acknowledge her arrival, to which the latter responded by equally nodding her head.

Angie did not need to ask anything, or even how Anita's day went, because the news of Anita being Sandra Warren's sister was already flying all over the internet. Anita's fans had been expecting her to say something about the situation.

Angie saw it on the internet a while ago.

Anita, on the other hand, did not bother saying a word to Angie; instead, she walked straight to Austin's bedroom to check on him. The young lad was already fast asleep and properly tucked into bed.

Anita sat on the bed for a while staring at her son. Knowing that he was the reason she was here, she drew more determination than ever before that she was going to save her son no matter what.

"I'm going to get you a sibling and save your life, okay?" She whispered and bent down to kiss his forehead, then adjusted his duvet, even though it clearly needed no adjustment.

She walked back to the sitting room, straight to the fridge, intending to get herself a bottle of water.

She was filling her glass with water when her phone, which she had earlier dropped on the table, started to ring.

It was quite late, but Anita was not new to receiving calls at that time of the day as a result of her profession.

She dropped the class and walked over to the table to pick up the phone.

"Hello." She quipped into the phone when she discovered it was her doctor's.

She was about to explain to him that she was already on it and that she needed more time to be able to get the job done.

But Doctor Sam beat her to it.

Out of his lips came the most joyful words Anita had ever heard in a very long time.

"We found a potential bone marrow match; it's not yet really a relief since we need to find out first if he can donate to your son."

The once solemn look Anita had worn on her face and had been carrying around since she came home gradually transformed into a smile as her lips spread out beyond control.

"Are you for real?" She blurted out, not minding that her voice was so loud that it could wake up the whole estate.

Her shout attracted Angie's attention, who stopped what she was doing and looked up to see what was wrong with her friend.

"If the tests come out positive tomorrow, then it would really be a great cause for celebration."

Doctor Sam said happily before the call ended.

The moment the call ended, Anita jumped up, screaming, forgetting that she was holding her phone, which immediately succumbed to gravity the moment she let go of it. Her only saving grace was the soft rug on which she had been standing.

"May I know what has brought this much joy to you?" Angie inquired, finally closing her laptop and walking towards Anita.

"You won't believe that they found a donor for Austin." Anita cheered.

Angie joined her in the celebration as they both hopped about the living room.

Anita insisted on spending the night close to her son. That night, she was grinning from ear to ear as she put herself under the fluffy white duvet and took her son in her arms.

Who knows, she might not even need to seduce Alexander anymore; at least she would be saved from having to deal with that arrogant man just to get sperm from him.

But then she was grateful he saved her from those reporters.

***

Leo's car pulled up in front of Warren's mansion; the lights were all out since it was quite late, except for one window, which seemed to be Mr. Warren's window. He was probably up reading again.

Sandra, whom Leo expected to get out of the car, sat still in the passenger's seat, accessing his face with scorn on her face, which Leo noticed but chose to be quiet about; he just couldn't wait for her to get off so that he could enjoy the peace of his home.

"Why do you look unhappy?" Sandra asked after what seemed like a long moment of silence.

Leo let out a breath.

"Why did you call Anita your sister back there?" He demanded under his breath, his face furrowed.

Sandra crossed her arms and tilted her head backward.

"Well, is she not my sister? Can't I greet my sister again? In case you have forgotten, I think I need to remind you that the family name she tried to destroy, I am the one who fixed it, and that is the reason I'm engaged to you in the first place." She snapped, her voice raised.

"And you are trying to ruin the name you suffered to fix by reminding everyone of the long-forgotten event?" Leo hammered while making gestures in the air with his hands.

Sandra's face flushed. "Wait, are you supporting her? Do you still have feelings for her? After she slept with another man, Is that the reason you have been quiet about our wedding all this time?" Her face contorted, and she started to cry.

Leo rolled his eyes; he had no choice but to console her. He pulled her to himself and placed her head on his chest while rubbing her back.

Leo drove away the moment Sandra came down from the car and walked into the house.

Sandra was walking hurriedly to her room without turning on the lights; she was already quite used to the house, even in the darkness. The house was expectedly quite safe for the click sound her heels made on the hard floor.

Just as Sandra was about to make it to her room, she felt a hand pull her forcefully. She was struggling when she was pulled into a room and the lights were turned on. That was when she realized that it was her mother, Margaret Warren, who had pulled her into her room.

Sandra was about to open her mouth to demand why she was being dragged, but she was beaten to it by her mother.

"Why did you call her sister?" Margaret demanded with one of her hands on her waist while the other rested on the wall.

Sandra fidgeted, trying to think of what to say in self-defense, but her mother continued talking.

"Why can't you just let the sleeping dog lie? We have succeeded in kicking her out; what you should do is stay put until you get the company."

Margaret Warren pointed a finger at her daughter.

"Don't annoy Anita; don't even make your father think in her direction. Because if you end up ruining everything I worked hard to build," She waved her hand to shut her daughter away.

Sandra's mind was occupied by the thoughts of Anita as she walked back to her room. The coming back of that woman had caused a lot of problems in her life.

She was especially afraid of losing Leo to her.

She needed to act fast; she needed to blackmail Leo into marrying her quickly.

"What if I get pregnant? She bit her finger.

But Leo has always been very careful.
