Anita's heart rose as Alexander held her by the hand and took her away from the reporters. His hand firmed on her hand protectively.
She was sweating profusely and anxious at the same time, and she was sure that the lovely make-up that Angie had taken her time to do that evening before she left home would have been ruined by now. Her mind was raised with questions and scenarios, fearing what could happen next. Just after they had successfully escaped from the watchful eyes of the reporters, Alexander suddenly let go of her like he had been holding a plague and was relieved to finally have to let it go. And without saying a word to Anita, he walked away from her. Anita felt relief and confusion. Anita, who was still in shock, first looked at her hand and then looked up at his retreating as he walked toward his car. Determined that she would not let him go that night without a word, she followed immediately behind him and suddenly called his name just as he was about to enter his car, but then she almost regretted it immediately as he turned to face her once again, his brows raised. Anita stood stunned in one place when she finally got to look into his face once again. She could not deny the fact that this man was not only arrogant but also had an intimidating presence. Unable to find her voice, a whirlwind of thoughts raced through her mind, and she stared into the face of the man with whom she had had a one-night stand five years ago. Did he recognize her? What did he want? Would he demand custody of Austin? She needed answers, and fast. That and many more questions went through Anita's mind as she and Alexander stood face to face, just a few inches apart. The two stared into each other's eyes without saying a word, and she started to think it was a bad idea to approach him after saving her, but suddenly Alexander spoke up. "You called me," he said in the meanest and coldest voice Anita had ever heard. In her life, she was never used to being spoken to like that, but of course, she would have to endure it since she would have to spend a lot of time with this arrogant man in front of her, at least till she got what she wanted. Anita cleared her throat and straightened herself up for the task that was in front of her. "Uhhmm.... Actually.... I just wanted to thank you for helping me out there. I really wonder what would have happened if you did not get me out of there." She let out a nervous laugh and scratched her neck. Alexander just nodded his head and turned toward his car again. Anita, who was already nervous seeing that he was about to leave, knew that she needed to do something fast before he left—something that could get her closer to her goal. "No. Uhmm," she said hurriedly, and he stopped and turned to face her again, his facial expression, and Anita's heart skipped a beat. "Sorry… I mean, could you maybe drop me at my house?" She asked, demonstrating nervousness with her hands. Alexander had a blank expression on his face, and Anita could hardly tell if he was considering her request or if he was about to deny her blatantly. Anita had her eyes fixated on his lips and face, waiting for his response. He was about to say something when Anita suddenly heard her name being called from behind. She recognized the voice as that of Lawrence and her bodyguard. Anita slowly turned around with her eyes and fists tightly shut. "Fuck!" she mumbled to herself, her fixes clenched. Lawrence, who did not even notice how uncomfortable she was with his arrival, walked towards her and hugged her tightly. "Are you okay, Anita?" He asked when he disengaged from the hug and pushed a few strands of her hair backward with the tip of his index finger. Anita stood still as he went on and on with his annoying drama, not moving an inch. Why now of all times? Why would he choose to spoil the little chance she had of Alexander dropping her home? Anita had reasons to believe that if Lawrence had not shown up, Alex would have agreed to drop her home, and with that, she might even succeed in seducing him, and they might even end up in the hotel room on the way. But now this annoying guy has ended up ruining it. Anita knew that she needed to act fast with Alex because, with the way Sandra acted tonight, she did not have much time to achieve her goal. The atmosphere got a bit tense for Anita as she looked from Alexander to Lawrence, who did not even look like he noticed the inconvenience he had caused her. Alexander, who had a blank expression on his face all along, finally spoke. "My friend is here now; he will drop you." He said simply, and with that, he got into his car and drove off without sparing Anita another glance. Anita stared back at Lawrence, who was letting out a sheepish smile scornfully. She picked offense in the way he had hugged her in front of Alexander; now he would think she was in some sort of relationship with him. She hated Lawrence even more because she believed that his closeness to her would do nothing but ruin her chances with Alexander since they were close friends. "Don't bother yourself; my personal guard will drop me," Anita said angrily and walked out on him, her hills making clicking sounds on the ground as she walked away, her manicured fingers rugged into her palm. Scarlet, who was standing in a corner watching them, saw Anita walking away from Lawrence, and she quickly saw that as an opportunity. After all, it has always been her dream to be the girlfriend of a billionaire, and Lawrence would not be a bad catch. She quickly went to Lawrence, hoping to get close to him. "Hi Lawrence, how are you?" She smiled, biting her lower lip, and Lawrence scoffed. "I'm sorry, I'm not in the mood to talk to you now," Lawrence replied angrily and walked away. Scarlet stood there motionless, her hand covering her face, looking down. All her anger was not directed at Lawrence, who just embarrassed her; instead, it was directed at Anita. "Who does she think she is? That hoe?" "First it was the director, and now it was Lawrence, " she said with gritted teeth. "Why was she getting all the men to herself?" "Why did that woman choose to constantly irritate me?" She stomped her feet. She could not help but think that if Lawrence was interested in Anita, it was quite obvious by the way he was sticking to her all night. She had had high hopes all night that she would get the chance to get in touch with Lawrence that night since the director had earlier told her that he had sent invites to their company. Scarlet was thinking that she would finally get the chance to catch his attention, only for that bitch to ruin it for her. "What is so special about Anita? Is she that good in bed?" She stomped her feet once again and walked back inside the hall angrily while looking around to make sure no one saw what just happened.Anita sat in the back seat of the car as her personal security drove her home. She kept fidgeting and looking through the window all through the journey. Alexander's face and the scene that played out a few moments ago kept replaying in her head over and over again. She was still in a place of uncertainty about whether Alexander had recognized her as the woman he had a one-night stand with or not. But then, if he did, why did he not say anything about it? Or if he didn't, why was he that way toward her?The second question was not a topic of continuous reflection since Anita had come to notice that he was like that towards every other person. But then what if he knew and was waiting for the right time to say it? Or what if he eventually found out in the course of her trying to seduce him?Anita was torn between her desire to seduce him and her fear of him discovering her true identity. And then Lawrence seemed to be another stumbling block to her chances of getting close to Alex and g
CHAPTER 7Anita woke to a pair of small arms wrapped tightly around her. A smile spread across her lips because she already knew who the hands belonged to. She slowly opened her eyes to come face-to-face with her son, who was lying right in front of her and hugging her. He had a bright smile on his face."Are you okay, mom?" You weren't home when I went to bed last night.""I'm okay, baby." She smiled and nodded, running her hand on Austin's head.It wasn't like it wasn't a usual occurrence for her son to go to bed sometimes without his mom being around anyway. She just hoped he would understand that she was just trying to find a way to save him, and Anita was glad Austin always understood her, just like an adult."Guess what, Austin." She had a bright smile on her face as she teased his jaw."What mummy? What are you up to this time around?" He demanded, with one of his brows raised, and Anita smiled."I got a call from the doctor last night, and it seems like there is little hope fo
Hello, Doctor Sam." Anita spoke into the phone the moment she pressed the answer button with shaky hands, her ear eager to hear the next word, that would either change everything and leave Los Angeles for good, or the other way round."Are you there, Anita?" The doctor questioned, his voice thick and low.Anita tried to read the doctor's tone to deduce if she could get a hint of the kind of news he had brought her. But the tone of his voice did not give out any hint; it was neutral. Just as neutral as it was when she sat in front of him the day Austin's doctor in London broke the news of Austin's condition to her.Anita could not help but wonder if they had been trained to properly hide their emotions from showing in their voices."Yes, doctor." She cleared her throat and tightened her fists. "Any good news?""I'm so sorry, Ms. Fredrick; unfortunately, the potential donor cannot help your son due to unforeseen circumstances." The doctor declared in the same neutral voice that he had n
CHAPTER NINEAnita moved close to Angie, her hand dancing on her laptop keyboard and Anita's eyes tracing what she was typing on the screen."So I've been keeping tabs on Lawrence for a while now, and I found out that there is a club he likes to go to." She said, her slender finger tapping on the enter key."Does Alexander also go there?" Anita inquired, perplexed as to how this would be useful."Once in a while, I guess," she said, standing up from the tiled floor."Know what, honey? Lawrence has actually made your job easier by trying to get close to you. As you know, Alexander is kind of a difficult and unapproachable person. I'm not sure it would be easy for you to get close to him without using a tool like Lawrence, you know." Angie said as she fumbled about the living room, sorting Austin's robot toys. Anita's mouth formed a smile, and she exhaled. It was unclear to her where her best friend was attempting to get her attention, but she shook her head in agreement, and she joined
"Thank you." Anita mouthed at the waiter who served her a drink, then she turned to Lawrence. "Thanks for the drink; you just saved me some dollar notes." Anita maintained a bright smile, and Lawrence could hardly tell if she was being sarcastic or not, no matter how hard he tried to read the puzzled expression on her face.He suddenly thought that was the perfect opportunity to clear things up with her because he believed she must have seen the video. Of course, it went viral.Lawrence cleared his throat and tightened his grip on his glass."And about the rumor flying around lately about me and Scarlet, I'm sure you've seen the video," Lawrence said, his eyes focused on Anita.Anita pulsed her lips but maintained a straight face. "I'm not sure which video you are talking about." She brought her glass to her mouth and took another sip from it."Come on, Anita, the video was everywhere on the internet; it was all over the place. Well, I just wanted to tell you that nothing is actually
Anita rubbed her eyes sleepily and looked around the room. That was when she noticed that she had been too tired to take off her outing clothes last night.Anita stood up from the bed and walked over to the mirror on the other side of her room. She laughed at her own reflection in the mirror. She looked like someone who had just been scooped out of a pool of water. On the table beside her mirror, where she had her make-up kits and skin products, was a framed picture of herself and her son with Angie. She picked it up and ran her fingers gently over it. A small smile appeared on her face. She immediately changed into casual outfits, put on her flip-flops, and went to the sitting room to find Angie sitting on the couch and working on her computer."You are awake," Angie remarked without looking up from her computer."You were all asleep when I came back last night." She went over to sit on the couch close to Angie."I came to your room earlier this morning; you were still deeply asleep.
Anita walked back to Lawrence and quickly excused herself, letting him know she needed to use the restroom. Lawrence nodded with a smile, feeling worthy when he noticed she had been giving their relationship more value.Without wasting time, she strode toward the restroom, eager to see the contents of what Angie had sent to her."Wow, Angie is such a genius." She exclaimed with her fingers covering her mouth once she was in the restroom and entered one of the stalls. She started to zoom her phone in and out repeatedly. She even included voice notes."What would I have done without you, Angie?" She exclaimed again, smiling so much that she almost let out a laugh, but she suppressed it, knowing that people might be eavesdropping on her.It came at the right time; she needed it.Her manicured fingers typed on her phone quickly, sending messages to Angie to release the content immediately, both the pictures and audio.Wearing a big smile on her face, Anita stepped out of the restroom stal
Alexander was sitting at the bar, sipping whiskey. The club sprang to life with music and conversation. He was staring into the wine glass, deep in thought on what just happened a few hours ago.It was still hard for Alexander to believe Hilda, whom he loved and trusted with all of his heart, would do that to him.He waved the waiter off when he dropped the third bottle of wine he had requested for that night on the table and tried to open it.His eyes drifted to a couple who were a few tables away from him; seeing them kissing and laughing made him remember Hilda. Even though Alex was a man of principle and one of the most feared in Los Angeles, to some extent, Hilda had control over him.She didn't need to ask before Alexander gave her everything. He was the one who helped her secure her current modeling job by investing millions of dollars in the agency, just to make her happy, even though she was not lacking anything.Alex smirked when he remembered he sacked three of his workers
