Chapter 2

Author: Mountain River
Liam's brow furrowed.

"Sweetheart, don't overreact. Elena is the most powerful Shaman Healer in the pack. Her diagnoses are never wrong."

He stepped closer, softening his voice, reaching for my shoulder.

"Besides, you already agreed to sign the Blood Pact. Backing out now isn't exactly Luna behavior."

I stepped sideways, out of reach.

"Maybe I'm Luna to this pack." I held his gaze. "But first—I'm a mother."

"Lily's in Rampage, and you didn't bother looking for a cause. You didn't look for a cure. You just wrote her off in your head."

"Tell me, Alpha—is the pack so desperate for organs that you need to sacrifice your own daughter?"

Liam's expression froze.

"Sophie, what kind of talk is that? This is an honor!" His voice dropped, heavy. "You know as well as I do—once a wolf enters Rampage, there's no coming back. This tantrum you're throwing? It's pointless. Just wasting time."

"If anyone's to blame, it's her. She didn't have the willpower—"

My blood turned to ice.

He was saying Lily deserved this. That she brought it on herself.

I stared at him for a long moment. Then I turned without another word and walked away.

Right now, keeping Lily alive was all that mattered.

The man behind me? He wasn't the father who'd once spent a fortune buying naming rights to a star because our little girl wanted one.

I pulled out my phone as I headed back to Lily's room.

My fingers hesitated over a number I hadn't called in five years.

My brother - Marcus Warren. Now a Council member.

Five years ago, I'd left our vast territory behind to mate Liam, to build Ironridge Pack with him. Every time I wanted to visit home, Liam stopped me. Said he couldn't bear the days without me.

So my family and I drifted into silence.

But now? They were Lily's only hope.

The line connected. I didn't have time to explain.

"Marcus. Bring your best Healer to Ironridge. Now. It's Lily—"

A beat of silence. Then my brother's voice, low and steady:

"Hold on. I'm coming."

I glanced at the clock.

One hour. If we could survive one hour, everything would change.

Liam had been mind-linking me nonstop. I'd blocked every attempt. He caught up to me, breath quick.

"Sophie, enough!" His voice stayed low, his face still wearing that "I'm worried about you" mask.

"Come sign the pact. The Elders are waiting."

I didn't look at him. My eyes stayed on Lily, chained to that bed.

Liam grabbed my wrist, trying to pull me toward the office. "Stop interfering with the Healers. Dragging this out helps no one."

I whipped my head toward him. "What's the rush? Eager to sign so you can hand her over for butchering?"

His pupils contracted. Panic flickered behind his eyes—there and gone.

"What the hell are you talking about? She's my daughter! You think I'm some kind of monster?"

"Lily's wolf spirit is shattered. She's nothing but a thing now—a beast that only knows how to bite and tear. Giving her body to the pack, saving other pups with potential—that's the only value she has left."

"She always said she wanted to be a hero for the pack. I'm honoring her wish."

The words hit me like a fist.

Weeks ago, he'd started telling Lily stories about wolf heroes who gave their lives for the pack. Her eyes had sparkled. She'd clapped her little hands and shouted, "I want to be a hero too!"

I'd felt proud then. Thought he was teaching her kindness.

It never once occurred to me—he was priming her. Softening her up. Using her own goodness as the knife to carve her open.

I planted myself in the doorway.

"I'm not signing anything. No one touches Lily."

Liam's composure cracked. His voice rose.

"Sophie, keeping her trapped in this—what's the point? Her flesh is rotting from the inside out. Her wolf is devouring whatever sanity she has left. Soon she'll just be a breathing corpse. Is that the life you want for her?"

He stepped closer, pinning me with his stare.

"Don't let your personal feelings override what's best for the pack."

Liam whipped his head toward me, eyes bloodshot and bulging."What? What else?!"I pulled two scrolls from my bag— Bloodline Verification Scrolls stamped with the Council's highest seal— and tossed them at his feet."See for yourself."Liam picked them up.His hands shook violently, like he already knew. The first scroll: Elena Vance's daughter compared to him. Match: 0.00%.The second scroll: Elena Vance's daughter compared to the Chief Elder. Match: 99.99%.Liam's face began to contort. Strange sounds crawled up his throat— guttural, choking— like something had lodged in his windpipe and wouldn't come loose. In that moment, everything he'd prided himself on— his love, his sacrifices, every cruel decision he'd made to protect that woman— turned into a joke. A sick, twisted joke."No… impossible… THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE!"He clawed at the scroll, tearing it to shreds, like destroying the paper would undo the truth."Why impossible?"I watched him drown. Then I crushed the last bubble of hop

Liam slammed the door open. The sight before him ripped his eyes wide. There, on the wide wooden bed— Elena Vance, half-dressed, tangled up with an old man.The old man was none other than the pack's Chief Elder."Ahh!"Elena shrieked and grabbed a sheet, clutching it to her body. The Elder tumbled off the bed in a panic, scrambling for his robes.Liam's eyes went blood-red. He fixed them on Elena, his voice scraping up from some deep, dark place:"Elena… you bitch! What the hell are you doing?"Elena's face went white as bone. She crawled toward him, grabbing his leg, clinging."Alpha, let me explain! I didn't want this!""The Elder forced me! He threatened to strip my Healer title— I had no choice!"Liam's whole body shook. He stared at this woman, and in that moment, his entire world collapsed. He'd always thought he was the Alpha— the one in control. Instead, he was just a puppet. A fool. Played by everyone.I leaned against the doorframe, unhurried, and pulled a memory crystal fro

Back in Liam's territory, the Alpha Mansion felt like a tomb. The servants who once sneered at me now scattered like mice spotting a cat whenever I passed.I walked straight into the bedroom and started packing— gathering the few things that belonged to me and my daughter. There wasn't much. Liam always had an excuse about pack thrift, skimming our allowance while sending the finest gems and fabrics to Elena's quarters.I wrapped Lily's little wooden carvings in cloth and tucked them carefully into my bag. Each piece held a memory— a small token of survival in the dark. Then the door slammed open.Liam stood there— bloodshot eyes, unshaven, wrecked. The arrogant Alpha was gone. In his place stood a cornered animal, radiating desperation and fury.He saw me packing. His eye twitched."Sophie. You're really doing this?"His voice was raw, scraped clean of pretense. "Fine. Tear up the mate contract. I won't fight you for the pup.""But you have to drop the charges against Elena. Keep this

After the deafening silence came an eruption— voices crashing like lava through the hall.Every pair of eyes locked onto Liam and Elena. The same wolves who, moments ago, had praised Elena's purity and called me selfish now wore expressions of shock and betrayal.Elena's face drained of every drop of color. She stumbled backward, shaking her head violently."No… that's not real! It's a projection!""She used Dark Magic to fake it!"Her voice pitched high and sharp, fear bleeding through every syllable.Liam looked like a corpse. That mask of cold composure he always wore? Shattered. His lips moved, but nothing came out.The Elder, sensing disaster, broke into a sweat. He stammered, "This… this requires further investigation…"Then he fled, his attendants scrambling to keep up.Marcus let out a low, humorless laugh. "Good thing I brought someone who knows how to crack a memory crystal. We got to it before they could destroy it."I squeezed his hand in silent thanks. Then I walked forwar

The lead healer Marcus had brought examined Lily, then turned to my brother with a grim nod.I screamed. "That's impossible! How can the diagnosis stand? She was hit with Dark Magic!"Liam's body uncoiled. A smug smile spread across his face."Sophie. Anything else to say? Apologize to Elena. Now. Then get out."Elena, of course, played magnanimous."Alpha, it's fine. She doesn't need to apologize.""The Luna's just grieving. Losing a pup is hard. I forgive her. As long as she signs the pact."The crowd erupted— praise for Elena, poison for me."Ungrateful bitch.""Throw her out. Let the Healer save pups who actually matter."Ice flooded my veins. Was this it? Was I doomed to watch my daughter die again, even with a second chance? That familiar darkness closed in around me—Then Marcus's voice brushed my ear. Low.
