"Drop that knife right now! Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Melanie Watkins' panicked shouts crackled through the radio.

With the knife pressed against the rope, I let out a cold laugh. "I'm giving you two choices. Either you contact the rescue team to get me off this ship, or I cut this rope right now, and the more than 20 people escorting the ransom die with me."

The other teammates who had been playing dumb finally panicked. One after another, they began speaking up for me.

"Melanie, everyone knows how much Mr. Zimmerman cares about his daughter, so you'll be held responsible too if the money's gone. Just tell him where the backup fuel's stored."

The crates tied to the rope held the ransom for Ella Zimmerman, daughter of Starbury's wealthiest man, Hugh Zimmerman. The kidnappers gave us an hour to hand over the 20 million dollars in gold bars, or they would kill her.

Hugh paid top dollar to hire our technical team to deliver the ransom by cargo ship to the border. We were just 30 minutes away from the border when the fuel ran out.

Before departure, I had repeatedly checked everything to ensure that the mission would go as planned. Clearly, someone had sabotaged me on purpose, but I never imagined Melanie, my wife, to be the culprit.

Melanie swallowed hard and tried to calm me down. "The hurricane's coming. Even if the rescue teams set out now, they won't make it in time.

"Don't do anything stupid, Clifton. The backup fuel is in the aft compartment.

"Once you get it, you can reach the shore. There are only 30 minutes left, so move!"

Her voice was shrill with worry, and it didn't sound like a lie.

Clutching the knife, I stood up and headed toward the rear of the ship. The hurricane had swallowed the sea, and the howling wind stirred deep fear. Every step I took felt like a gamble with death.

I held tight to the edges and was careful not to rock the ship with my movement. One misstep nearly sent me overboard, but I finally reached the spot she had indicated.

What I found sitting in the aft compartment was a turtle shell with my name carved on it.

Darell Parker's mocking laughter came through the radio. "You're obedient, just like a sea turtle, Clifton!

"There isn't any backup fuel here. We dumped it all onshore ages ago.

"This is all your fault for trying to show off and steal Hugh's gig. Running into a hurricane is your karma!"

Melanie chuckled lightly. "You love stealing credit and lecturing us, don't you? Well, today's just your lesson.

"If you think you could threaten me with the ransom, you'd be pathetic, Clifton. I know you too well to understand that a bootlicker like you would never dare offend Mr. Zimmerman."

Her words made it clear that her earlier concern was just an act. Everything she was doing was revenge for Darell, just to get back at me.

Before the ransom run, I knew that a hurricane was coming, but I was the only one on the technical team with the skill to pilot the ship safely to the border before it hit. So, I took the job alone because I was worried about the safety of the rest of the team.

I hadn't taken a single penny more in commission compared to the rest of them, but they misunderstood and wanted me dead, lost at sea when the hurricane arrived. It was a perfectly planned setup to make me disappear.

I crushed the insulting sea turtle shell in my hand and snapped into the radio, "This is your last chance, Melanie! If I die, Ella won't get rescued, and you'll be the first person they come after!"

As Hugh tightened his fingers on the trigger, a chill ran down my spine, but I steeled myself and said, "Only I know where Ella is right now. Are you sure you want to kill me?"Once I'm dead, she'll truly slip out of your control. And besides, you don't have the guts to pull the trigger in broad daylight, do you?"Hugh sneered and cocked the gun. "Stop trying to push me. I'm the law in Starbury, while you're just a hired hand. No one cares if you die, and I have the money to deal with anything."Just as the words left his mouth, sirens blared along the coastline. Ella arrived with the police and confronted Hugh head-on. "Oh? Does that include dealing with your biological daughter, too?"When Hugh turned around and saw the whole fleet of police officers and snipers, he finally panicked and slipped back to the devoted-father persona he had set up for the cameras."E-Ella! You're alive!"Come here so I can take a good look at you! You must've suffered so much!"Unfortunately, eve

Melanie immediately panicked. With tears and snot running down her face, she clung to me and refused to let go."I'm sorry, honey. Don't send me back because I'll go crazy in there. Darell's dead, and I don't want to die, too! "I swear I'll never look at another man again. Just let me stay, and please don't send me back to the psychiatric hospital!"After sending Ella away, I turned around to deal with Melanie. It was obvious that she was traumatized by whatever she had endured in the psychiatric hospital and kept muttering under her breath, "Don't hit me! Let me go! I'm sorry!"Hugh hadn't shown an ounce of mercy. He had orchestrated the entire drama himself, yet he acted as if he was truly avenging his daughter. Human life meant nothing to him at all.Seeing what he had done to Melanie made me worried if Ella could actually keep her promise to protect me.When Melanie noticed that I was lost in thought, she cried and pleaded, "Please don't kick me out, Clifton. I have nowhere

After everything was dealt with, Hugh looked in my direction and coldly said, "I heard you used to be a lifeguard. Do you still want to guard the sea?"You know too much, but since you were in the recent kidnapper news, I won't touch you for now. Go to the border. Better yet, disappear from my sight, or I can't guarantee what I might be capable of."Hugh had made arrangements for me, so I nodded and accepted everything.Just before leaving, I asked, "What about the kidnappers? Are you just letting them go?"With his back to me, he was silent for a long time before finally saying, "I have my own ways of handling things."I was sent back to the border waters to resume rescue work.Five years ago, I had been a lifeguard, but I sustained severe injuries after saving Melanie. My arms could no longer withstand prolonged seawater exposure, so I had to leave lifeguarding and join the technical team.I knew how cruel the sea could be, which was why I trained the team with harsh disciplin

Melanie grabbed her coat and instinctively bolted for the door."If you're not buying the tickets, forget it. This threat isn't fun at all, so stop trying to give me a fright."I don't even know what you're talking about. It has nothing to do with me at all…"Darell was trembling with so much fear that he couldn't even hear the word "Hugh" without flinching. As the two tried to flee, I clapped my hands before a dozen bodyguards poured in and surrounded them. "As I said, you're not getting out of here. None of us is escaping responsibility for Ella's death, especially you two!"The bodyguards dragged them before Hugh and forced them to their knees."Do you know what you've done?" Hugh asked, polishing a gleaming dagger with clear, unmistakable sharpness. For a man as wealthy as Hugh, money could fix anything. Human lives were just numbers that didn't matter to him at all.Cameras were set up. His revenge on them was likely just another way to reinforce his devoted-father imag

The kidnapper jeered. "I gave your daughter an extra 30 minutes to live, so you should thank me for that."If you want her body intact, bring another 20 million dollars!"Hugh was already on the rescue ship as he tearfully agreed. But the moment he turned away, he ordered the ship to leave the border.Reporters hidden on the rescue ship emerged and showed him the footage they had just captured. "We've decided on the headline. 'Tycoon nearly driven insane with fear while trying to ransom his daughter. Greedy kidnappers demand another 20 million dollars after taking the money…'"Hugh nodded in satisfaction. "Good work. Everyone gets a bonus once this hits the front page. "It looks like I'll make quite the headline this time."I stood behind him and found the entire scene incredibly tragic. All his concern and devoted father act was just a performance for the headlines. When I turned and looked back toward the compound, I saw Ella standing up from the pool of blood.I rubbed my

I swam down to the crates filled with gold bars and opened them one by one. Someone as calculating as Hugh would have anticipated every possible outcome. I refused to believe that he would willingly hand over ten full crates of gold.Sure enough, I found oxygen supply in the ninth crate. It hit me that he had wanted to temporarily placate the kidnappers with the gold bars. Once Ella was rescued, he would have his men retrieve the gold bars from the sea. With the oxygen gear, I could hold on a little longer.Sure enough, voices from the rescue team soon broke across the surface of the sea. "Clifton! The rescue team is here! We know you're still alive!"Bring the ransom up now!"When I surfaced, the rescue team risked the hurricane to haul me onboard.Hugh was also on the rescue ship. When he noticed that I was wearing the oxygen gear, his expression immediately darkened."Where's the ransom? If a single bar's missing, I'll throw you back into the sea myself!"I removed the oxy
