BRIGID

Standing in Kronos’s chamber felt like teetering off of the edge of a cliff. One single slip-up and I could find myself hanged for treason.

Luckily, Kronos was away at a council meeting. One that decided whether or not to issue a warrant for Lucas. If the warrant was issued, it would mean an endless life of running from the law.

Lucas would be hunted down forever by vampire-kind.

It was my fault.

I should have expected Nicasa’s next movie. I knew her better than to believe she would ever help another person—let alone, Lucas of all people.

I shouldn’t have returned to Chelver. I should’ve found a physician somewhere nearby. I would have been back by now.

Not trapped in this godforsaken place.

I’d been captured by Nicasa not long after entering the city.

She dragged me to Kronos and threw me at his feet, demanding I confess to Lucas’s whereabouts. I didn’t have a choice in the matter. They would have killed me if I hadn’t told them.

I was relieved to hear that Lucas had escaped—b

BRIGIDNicasa froze.I turned to the sight of Kronos, half-veiled by the shadows. He didn’t stand alone; several Elders stood at his side, along with Emilia. The queen looked frozen in place, her face turned to icy stone. I’d never seen her like that. For as long as I knew Emilia, she had always acted with so much…poise.A moment later, a squad of guards poured in behind them, shields in hands. Their gear was silver-plated, reinforced for royal defense. They formed a like across the corridor, like a wall snapping into place. Then Kronos stepped forward. For a beat, I didn’t see the man who had grown so distant and dull, slowed by poison disguised as an aging mind. I saw the Kronos I once knew—a stalwart leader, full of resolve and crafted from steel. A man whose mind was always three steps ahead of everyone else.He spoke with a familiar, calm clarity that made something twist deep inside of me.“Put it down, Nicasa. It’s over.”I stared at Kronos in shock. The haze, the weariness, th

BRIGIDI should have turned back. I should have marched straight to Kronos and told him everything—every word I’d overheard. Every loose giggle and stern whisper shared between Nicasa and Leopold.Instead, I stalked the shadows like a thief—because I wasn’t sure that he’d believe me. And worse, I was certain he’d be furious if he discovered I used my ability on him.A cold unease settled on my skin as I trailed Nicasa through the palace’s dim corridors. The air was stale and the halls were hushed—probably due to Benjamin’s death. His murder had shattered the nightly revelry that just days ago, echoed through every hallway. Music and laughter had stopped, and the staff had been busy cleaning up after the celebrations. Most of the nobles had left the palace with their slaves in tow—and the ones who stayed had locked themselves away in their chambers.A place that had just days ago been so full of life turned into an empty, deserted place. As I wandered the halls, I couldn’t help the shi

BRIGIDI flew around Nicasa’s chambers, rummaging through every crate and drawer to find something that might be of use to me. Everything I found was mundane to say the least. Gilded mirrors and boar bristle brushes, makeup and jewelry and fine linen. It wouldn’t have been that easy, but I had to try.Among her many possessions, I stumbled upon tools and toys used to discipline her pets. They were overkill, even for a vampire.Disgusting sadist. I was shuffling through her wardrobe when sharp heels came toward her chambers. Quickly, I slipped inside the sitting room, hiding within in the shadows of a tall reading chair. There were giggles. Laughter and the sound of warm delight between two people. Then, the wet sounds of mouths meeting. Was she with the pet?I was just peaking around the wall when Nicasa’s sharp voice cut through the silence, “Leave.”I could see little from where I hid, but I caught the tail end of her slave as he hurried out of the room.As the door closed, Nicasa

VALERIEThis night passed with the same dull silence as the night before.Sebastian slept on the couch, while I stretched my small body out on a bed ten sizes too small. I had tried to convince him to take the bed instead. He was covered in wounds, after all. But Sebastian refused. The air felt stiffer than usual. I wondered if I’d made a mistake telling him about my suspicions involving Jasper. Sebastian hardly said a word to me after that.Even after I passed on Christine’s message to him. That she loved him and missed him.I couldn’t shake the image of Sebastian when I told him. How he flinched and rubbed a face up his hand. He rose to his feet after I told him, and asked if I was sure I wanted to go to the Divine Spirit.I was certain, and it didn’t take long to convince Sebastian. He promised to take me to Amara when I felt ready, but if what happened today was any indication of what our next meeting would hold, he swore to send me right back to Xavier.I had agreed to his condit

XAVIERAres snarled in my head nearly the entire time Ralph delivered his report. He had been irritable since the moment Valerie left out sight. Furious at me for letting her go—furious at Valerie for leaving, and furious at Ralph for not finding a lead by now.I had told him to find a way into Qiovadore. Any way. A mountain path, a smuggler’s route—I would even take help from vampires, if such a thing would give us access to the dragon’s domain.Even if he only had the faintest idea of a possibility, I would have taken it.But he had nothing. No leads, no plans—only more bad news.“The Northeners said entering Qiovadore would be madness,” Ralph said. He wore a grim expression. “It’s sacred ground. The dragons’ domain. Impenetrable. The only way to access it is through air, on the back of a dragon. That’s likely how they took Valerie.”This was nothing I didn’t already know. The high mountains and vertical cliffs, along with the impossible terrain, made Qiovadore impregnable lands.Fo
