Valerie

We were all led into a spacious room, where a black curtain surrounded a short dais. A stage of sorts, large enough to fit several people. The host waited for the room to fill, watching every vampire flood in with a satisfied smile on his face. Beneath his happy demeanor, I could tell he was nervous. His entire being seemed to depend on the event going smoothly.

“Stay close,” Lucas whispered in my ear. He wrapped his fist twice around the leash and reeled me into his side. “I fear Xavier will make good of his promise.”

I nodded, shuffling even closer to him. My heartbeat was beginning to elevate again, what with all the vampires standing so close to one another. So close to me.

I was shoulder-to-shoulder with another slave. A boy, for once. I could not tell if his master was a man or a woman, but I could see the hopelessness in his eyes. The fear in his expression as the chandelier above us drenched light upon his face.

“Thank you for coming!” The host began. He moved his

VALERIEA nervous unease walked up my spine like tiny insect legs. I shivered at the chill it left behind and looked at the woman.“Who are you? W-what are you?”The woman didn’t answer right away. Instead, she reached a hand out to me and whispered, “Come closer.”Every bone in my body told me not to. Something about this woman was strange and made me terribly uneasy. Her voice was gentle, but the eerie way it reached my ears put every hair on end.I wished Diya was here to tell me what to do. I wished she was here to howl or snarl or pace—or to reprimand me for making the stupid decision to follow Sebastian to this room. But I did not have her guidance here. I was all alone.I hesitate, my eyes falling to the woman’s thumb. It was adorned with a ring—almost exactly like the one we’ve found at Baycrest and the dungeon in Orheroad. The realization struck me and I gasped. She was a witch. Every instinct in my body told me to run, but I didn’t know why. All I knew was that my heart wan

VALERIESebastian nodded to Miriam and she pressed a gentle hand to my back, nudging me toward the circle. My feet moved reluctantly, heat washing over my face at all the eyes that watched me approach. The entire crowd had turned their attention my way, and their warm, welcoming gazes made my heart flutter. The dragons were all so tall and beautiful, their shapes broad, stunning outlines in the sunlight. The breeders that had gathered at the circle watched my slow movements with soft smiles on their faces.I caught Sebastian’s eye just as he was handing the child back to his mother. His hand rested on the toddler’s round head for a moment, then he leaned in and murmured something to the twins. Nirvonth and Adrian both nodded in return, disappearing into the dark mouth of the cave.As I came closer, Sebastian turned to me. “Did you rest well last night?” he asked. His voice was low—barely a murmur, so as not to draw in any more attention.“Yes,” I replied. It was mostly true. Waking up

VALERIEI slept surprisingly well that night. I didn’t think it was possible after everything that had happened, but I supposed the exhaustion of my journey here had worn me down more than I realized.More surprisingly, I had dreams. Gentle, sweet, golden-tinted dreams.I dreamed of my mother—her laugh echoing like beautiful wind chimes through my childhood home. She was hanging laundry on the lines that ran along our back yard—the same back yard in Westshield, where I played with Mathilda.I dreamed of my mother’s hair—held up with a pencil, like it always was when she was busy. The curly tendrils falling from the corners—framing her apple cheeks and her wide, beaming smile. My father was pushing Mathilda on the swing he’d found at the local market. He’d bartered for hours over that swing—knowing we couldn’t afford to pay outright for it. He sold them a week’s supply of Mom’s canned fruit supply instead. The swing set had seen better days. The slide was crooked and dented, and the sw

VALERIEI knew that I was letting my guard down—which probably wasn’t a good idea, given that I’d been forced to come here. But it was so hard to keep my hackles up. The women were all so kind. They saw the marks Lucas had left on me and thought surely I must’ve been an abused slave who suffered at the hands of a vampire. Miriam did her best to make me feel safe and comfortable in the cave. She had taken to braiding my hair while we fell into a deep discussion about dragons. I couldn’t help but fall into the gentle tug of her fingers. It reminded me of my own mother. The one I’d known, at least.“Dragons seem so…different from what I’d been told about them,” I said.“Oh, those silly stories aren’t true,” Miriam replied. “Dragons don’t force us to do as they please. They take us in if we’re willing to become their breeders, and they care for us. And anyway, we’re given choices on who we prefer and how we’d like to do it.”“What happens when a woman chances her mind?” I asked.“The drag

SEBASTIANNirvonth looked at me disapprovingly.“Why didn’t you let the witch examine that girl?” He asked. There was restraint in his voice, but it was beginning to fail. Nirvonth always did have more of a temper than his idiot brother. “Medic Don did warn us that the witch’s condition is quickly deteriorating,” he said. “We haven’t much time to take advantage of her capabilities. The caves grow hotter by the day.”Adrian placed a hand on his twin brother’s shoulder. “Calm down, Nirvonth. He was right to delay the meeting for today. The girl is already shaking in her boots. If we took her to the witch, imagine how frightened she’d be? If she’s scared, there won’t be much chance at all of her joining our harem.”“She isn’t joining the harem,” I replied. “That is not why we brought her here.”Adrian and Nirvonth exchanged a look. Then Adrian frowned in my direction. “But she’s the perfect age for breeding. And she’s fairly attractive—certainly unique looking. And it does come as quite

VALERIEI’ve never flown once in my entire life. Planes and helicopters didn’t exist after the great war, and they’d only been told about in stories. I had dreamed of flying since I was a child—of soaring high above the clouds, close enough to touch the sky. I imagined it would be beautiful—wonderful. It wasn’t.At least, not on the back of a dragon.I clung on as tightly as I could to the scales of Sebastian’s skin—terrified that if I lessened my grip even slightly, I’d be thrown off. I had been holding back vomit for several minutes now, nausea twisting my guts around like a thrashing python.I was growing dizzier by the second—my mind spinning as I yearned to feel the ground beneath my feet again. This was so disorienting—so cold and uncomfortable. And to add, I had no idea how long we’d been flying for. It could have been minutes or hours. All I knew was that the sky was darkening around us—almost like we’d flown into the eye of a storm.By the time we finally landed, I could bare
