Chapter 2

Author: Decaf Dream
Yvonne sized me up and down with a mocking smile. "Your outfit is really quite inappropriate for the occasion, Hope. You're already a grown woman now, so you ought to learn how to dress yourself properly. Otherwise, you won't even be able to get married when the time comes.

"I mean, what kind of man would be attracted to an unkempt woman? Do you want me to lend you something to wear, Hope?"

Those around us burst into laughter the moment Yvonne finished speaking.

Yvonne was decked out in high-end designer brands. She looked so perfectly put together that every strand of hair exuded the natural elegance of a wealthy woman.

I, on the other hand, had just emerged from a rigorous medicinal chemistry laboratory after spending 24 consecutive hours working alongside various chemical reagents and instruments. I was wholly exhausted.

I was dressed in a set of highly comfortable casual activewear—not a designer brand, but something simple and cozy that I had carefully chosen from a small storefront down the street.

"I'm sorry, but I don't think that's necessary, as I just want to have a good meal right now," I replied flatly and began enjoying the food in front of me. I hadn't eaten for a whole day following the high-intensity medicinal chemistry experiments, so my body urgently needed to replenish its energy.

Timothy suddenly walked up to me, took a bank card out of his pocket, and set it on the table. "I have 30 thousand dollars on this card. Consider this my way of giving you a hand for the sake of our past relationship.

"You should take better care of yourself in the future, find a more decent job, buy some new clothes, and learn to love yourself, Hope. You and I are already a thing of the past, so you shouldn't keep dwelling on it.

"If it hadn't been—never mind, it doesn't really matter anymore. You shouldn't completely lose your will to live and just give up on yourself just because I left you, Hope."

I looked up at Timothy in confusion. I felt intrigued by his unfinished statement, wondering what I had done in my past life that caused him to abandon me so resolutely following his rebirth in this life.

In our past life, we went from being high school sweethearts to getting married. Timothy pursued his dream of art, while I studied pharmacy, both of which required a lot of money and energy. Thus, one of us naturally had to make a sacrifice.

I loved him dearly in the past, so I threw away the opportunity to attend graduate and doctoral programs in medical school without a second thought. I entered the workforce early, using my single income to support both of our dreams, while he faced failure after failure. He had constantly been depressed and despondent.

I served as a power source for him that never depleted. I patiently placated him whenever he returned home exhausted.

I had assumed that Timothy would have understood my love for him, but unexpectedly, when he wanted to continue his studies again, and I refused because we didn't have enough money, he lost his temper. He threw his paintbrush to the ground.

"If I had listened to Yvonne back then and gone to Felvara with her to study art, I wouldn't have suffered like this in all these years. Do you know that? I genuinely regret ever being with you, Hope!"

Timothy later stopped painting and gave up on his dream, while I—due to his statement of regretting being with me—frequently cried myself to sleep in the middle of the night.

I still made one final attempt to save our relationship, though. I held him close and whispered, "I want to have a baby with you, Timothy."

Timothy violently shoved me away. An indescribable look of disgust flashed in his eyes. "How could we ever afford a child with our current financial situation? I told you a long time ago that I despise children! I have absolutely no desire to have a baby with you, Hope!"

Those remarks immediately shattered the last shred of hope I had left.

In the end, while we were arguing in the car one day, an oncoming truck ended both our lives, and at that exact moment, I harbored no fear within my heart but a sense of liberation.

Timothy and I had been reborn and had mutually resolved to maintain a distance. We aimed to never bring up our past relationship again.

I silently pushed the bank card back toward him. "It won't be necessary, as I don't accept things from strangers."

Timothy furrowed his brow. There was a note of disbelief in his voice as he asked, "Am I a stranger to you, Hope? What exactly do you mean by that?"

I replied calmly, "I'm saying that no matter what job I'm doing right now, I consider it respectable. There's nothing to be ashamed of. I haven't given up on myself either. You should keep this money for someone who actually needs it."

I continued, "I hope Timothy will cooperate with his treatment and stop bothering me from now on."Timothy's elderly parents nodded in understanding, looking deeply apologetic. Timothy was soon transferred to another hospital and never reached out to me again.I didn't hear anything about Timothy until his mother reached out to me by phone. "Timothy doesn't have much time left, and he really wants to see you. Is there any way you could come visit him, Hope?"I remained silent for a long time before replying hoarsely, "Alright…"I hung up the phone after saying that, and in that brief moment, I had this sudden urge to remember what it was like when we were in love in our past life. I couldn't remember any of it clearly, though, which made me realize that time really did have the power to erase everything.I came face-to-face with Timothy again, only to find that he was already emaciated beyond recognition. His high cheekbones left no trace of how he used to look. He was gazing list

I continued, "You ought to know that marrying you in our past life is my absolute biggest regret. I don't love you anymore, and I certainly don't want to have a child with you. I hope you stop living in the past because that past is a place I have no desire to ever return to."Timothy went utterly rigid where he stood once I finished speaking. His face was a picture of absolute misery.I didn't care at all; I just turned on my heel and left the hospital ward.Timothy yelled from behind me, "You ought to know that all men are the same, Hope! Do you really think Richard actually likes you? Why would the richest man in Norevane fall for an ordinary person like you? Get real, Hope! You two will never be happy together! I'm the only one who is best for you!"I quickened my pace after hearing those irritating remarks. He was the same as he was in our past life—he hadn't changed a bit. He looked down on those who were less fortunate than him when things were going well for him. He envie

Richard, who was right beside me, looked at me with an aggrieved expression. "You shouldn't drag me into this, honey. You see, I definitely conduct business with a conscience."I couldn't help but smile in response.Richard was always focused on creating high-value products for his customers. His products, hotels, and real estate developments used the highest-quality materials but were sold at the lowest possible prices. That approach allowed his company to expand rapidly, earning a stellar reputation in the process. He believed that if one respected the consumers, they would naturally return the favor.Karl, on the other hand, was someone who cut corners on material costs to make a profit, completely disregarding public safety. He definitely operated without a conscience. It wasn't long before I received a call from an unknown number. I hesitated briefly before I answered it.Timothy's voice sounded from the other end of the call. "Did you see the news? I was the one who report

I asked, "Didn't we say that having no intersections between us—including both our past life and this life—was the best arrangement when the two of us tacitly agreed to break up, Timothy? "You also deeply regretted being with me in our past life and didn't want to have children with me at all. I couldn't accept that kind of life."Timothy roared in fury, "I regretted it because you never supported me, Hope! You sent emails to those art publishers telling them not to accept my work!"I was completely bewildered after hearing that. "What on earth are you talking about? I have absolutely no idea what you mean. I never sent any emails! I was working three jobs a day just to support your art career back then, so I definitely wouldn't have the time to do something so petty. "I wanted you to succeed more than anyone else. Did you really not feel that in our past life, Timothy?"That revelation came as a total shock to Timothy. He stood rooted to the spot, looking completely crushed. He

Those surrounding us changed their attitudes in a matter of minutes."Who would have thought that Hope would actually marry the wealthiest man in Norevane? Timothy actually tried to dismiss her with a bank card earlier, which seems completely absurd now!""I know, right? They had assumed that the ex wasn't doing well, but as it turned out, Hope turned right around and found someone way better.""Didn't Yvonne just recommend a job for her at her cafe? You know, I just heard Hope is a senior lab researcher at Avelorn. She's apparently very accomplished. Why would she ever need someone else to find her a job? How absurd of Yvonne!""How could you not tell your former classmates about an event as significant as your marriage, Hope? You know, we could have prepared a grand wedding gift for you!"I looked at my former classmates who had completely ignored me at first but were now trying to act like we were close. The whole thing was utterly ridiculous. I still exchanged polite, distant

Upon seeing me, that young girl, who had initially maintained an icy demeanor, instantly broke into a deeply aggrieved expression. "Why didn't you come home yesterday, Mommy? I missed you so much!"I looked at Megan Gunther, my beloved daughter, as she ran over. I pulled her straight into my arms, comforting her softly. "I was working yesterday, sweetie. I told you about it before I left yesterday. I have the day off tomorrow, so I'll make it up to you by bringing you out to play, alright?" Megan nodded eagerly, exclaiming, "I'd love that! You're the best, Mommy!"Those present were all shocked to see this. Everyone looked at me in disbelief.Just as my former classmates were about to say something, a handsome man in a sharp suit rushed down from the conference room upstairs. "I heard from the hotel manager that you were attending an alumni reunion here, honey. You should have told me when you got off work so that I could have driven over to pick you up."It was then that the h
