Chapter 1

Death of the Omega Queen

MARA

“A girl!”

My mate’s voice echoed through the hospital like thunder.

Even through the pain, I heard the disgust in it. Heard the way the doctors went quiet. No one looked at me anymore. Their eyes slid away as if they were afraid.

Another contraction hit.

A broken sound left my throat. Ten hours. Ten long hours of unstoppable pain. My legs were numb. My back burned and I was weak. Sweat covered my face as I panted hard.

“The baby is in a bad position,” the doctor said in a low voice. “Alpha King Jace, you're going to need to choose who to save. Your mate or the baby."

Kendall, my cousin scoffed.

“What a curse,” she said. I could picture her wrinkling her nose. “Today is supposed to be my birthday and look. She wants to taint it with blood and cause trouble. Jace..." she called softly, looking wronged.

Jace reached out, rubbing her hands slowly in his as if he was comforting her.

“I thought she was supposed to be a moon blessed Omega,” Jace whispered before raising his head up. “Do whatever you want. She is no longer my mate. She is no Luna Queen of mine.”

His eyes caught mine for a second then he walked away.

Something inside my chest caved in, but I had no strength to cry. I had known for a long time that he did not love me. The bond between us had always been cold. He only came to me when he wanted an heir. After every miscarriage, he stayed away longer.

Three babies lost.

Three times I miscarried and he did not hold my hand.

But I didn't give up.

“Luna, push!”

The nurse’s voice dragged me out of my thoughts. Grabbing the edge of the bed, I pushed with everything left inside me. My vision went white as I screamed.

Suddenly, a sharp cry filled the room.

“It’s a boy!”

A boy.

My heart stopped for a second.

I tried to lift my head but the world spun. My body gave up. I collapsed back, gasping and trembling.

Finally, we had a son. An heir.

The door opened.

I forced my eyes open thinking it was Jace.

Instead it was Kendall.

She stood beside the nurse. Her fingers slowly brushing my baby's cheek. Her face looked calm, angelic but I knew it was facade. Suddenly, she leaned in and whispered something to the nurse. The nurses nodded.

Fear rushed through me.

“Where… where are you taking my baby?” I asked as my voice came out dry and weak.

The nurse didn't look at me.

“Take the child away.” Kendall ordered.

“No.” The word barely came out. “Please… let me see him first…”

The nurse hesitated, staring at me as if she didn't know whether to obey Kendall or not.

“Please!” I tried to sit up.

Pain exploded through my stomach. My body numb as I tried to move.

“Give him to me!” I screamed, but it sounded like a whisper.

The nurse walked to the door.

“Stop! That’s my baby! Please!”

The door closed.

Something broke inside my chest so completely I felt it echo. Kendall’s heels clicked toward my bed.

“You should be grateful,” she said softly. “Did you really think Jace would accept your child? You’re an Omega. Filthy. Weak.”

My hands curled into the sheets.

“You’ll pay for this,” I rasped. “When Jace finds out you took his son—”

She chuckled lightly and leaned closer. “If it wasn't for the fact that every female werewolf is having trouble getting pregnant, Jace would have never looked twice at you. He only married you because you're a moon blessed Omega, able to get pregnant at any time.”

The room went cold.

“You’re lying,” I whispered, but my voice shook.

“I’m not.” she chuckled again. “And now, I will be the Luna Queen when you're gone.” She lifted a syringe.

Before I could move, the other nurses grabbed my legs. I fought, twisting, scratching, but I was too weak.

The needle plunged into my neck. A burning cold spread through my veins.

Kendall straightened, satisfied, and walked away.

I rolled off the bed and hit the floor hard. The pain barely registered. I dragged myself toward the door, my fingers slipping on the tiles.

My baby.

I had to reach him.

I moved inches before my strength died. I collapsed in front of the door, my cheek against the cold floor.

“Moon Goddess…Please. Give me another chance.” I rasped as blood poured from the corner of my mouth.

My lungs pulled in one last, broken breath.

Darkness closed in.

“Mara, don't tell me you're still sleeping!” Kendall's voice echoed as she tapped me slowly.

My eyes flew open.

Air rushed into my lungs like I had been drowning. My body jerked upright on the bed, hands clutching the sheets. No pain. No blood. No smell of medicine.

Just… my room.

My old room.

Sunlight spilled through the window. The thin blue curtains I had sewn myself moved with the wind. The wooden dresser with the cracked mirror stood in the corner exactly where it used to be.

Slowly, I looked down at my hands.

Had it been a dream?

" Mara?" she called out again.

The memories hit me immediately. Everything they did to me, all the pain they caused me.

No, it hadn't been a dream. It was real. My baby.

“Where is he?” My voice came out raw as I shot to my feet, facing her. “Where is my baby?!”

Kendall jerked back, staring at me as if I had lost my mind.

“Your… baby?” she repeated slowly.

I lost it immediately. “Don't make me ask again. Where is my son! Where did you take my son?” I yelled angrily, not caring who was going to hear.

“Mara, what are you talking about? Are you sick?” Kendall frowned, taking a step back. “There is no baby. Today is the day we get our mates. Have you forgotten?”

My heart stopped.

I turned and quickly grabbed the calendar by my bedside. The date wasn't a lie.

I had been reborn to the day Kendall and I picked our mates.

My hand ran through my hair as I walked to the mirror. I was young, pretty and in perfect shape unlike before. Before Jace put me through all the hell I went

through.

My eyes darted to her through the mirror.

“ Gosh!" Kendall said, rubbing her arm. "Your dress and your mask are on the table. Get dressed. I'll see you at the masquerade ball, cousin.”

As she walked out of the room, my eyes darted to the table spotting the red dress she had picked for me.

Everything was the same as it had been in my past life. Finally, I could change my fate.

"You're not going to have your way this time, Kendall." I whispered, touching the fabric. "I will make both of you pay."
