Chapter 35

At three in the morning, Elowen put on her coat and went down to the dock.

She did not take a lamp. Since the new rule, nobody carried fire outside after dark. The only light was the thin grey glow of the ash sky and the soft shine of the silver leaf in her pocket.

Lucan was already there. He sat on the edge of the dock beside the Tern with one hand flat against the boat's wooden side. He did not turn around when she came close.

"You felt it too," he said.

"At the window," Elowen sai

"Nobody move," Elowen whispered. "We are cold. They cannot find us."On the boat, no one breathed. Hundreds of pale eyes stared across the water. Some Ashen tilted their heads. Some sniffed the air. They looked like dogs trying to remember a smell. Then the hum came back, one deep note, and the green light flared under the Teeth. All at once, every grey head turned away from the boat and faced the sea again. They rowed to the east jetty with muffled oars. It was a short stone pier with an iron ladder, hidden on the sea side of the tower, far from the causeway. The Ashen on the land side stood with their backs to it.A rope dropped from the roof. A woman slid down it fast, hit the jetty, and ran to the boat with her hand on her pistol. She was small and hard-faced, with a scar through one eyebrow and a Navy jacket gone grey with ash.She stopped at the edge of the stone and stared at Lucan."Sir," she said."Mercer."For a second, neither of them moved. Then Mercer stepped forward and

By nine in the morning, everyone in Lantern Point had gathered at the long table.Elowen stood at the head of it with her hands flat on the wood. She had called the meeting because it was the rule. Big choices were said out loud, in front of everybody."Station Nine is twelve miles up the coast," Lucan said. "The road is broken, so we go by sea. It is two hours in good weather. We take the Tern, and Teo thinks he can fix the old rescue launch by noon. Two boats. Maybe thirty-five people to bring home.""Thirty-five more mouths," Hale said. He did not say it cruelly. He was a careful man, and numbers were his job. "We took in eight just yesterday. We have food for winter, but only just.""I know," Elowen said. "Saskia?"Saskia stood up with her thick ledger. She did not even open it. "We have enough for two months if the Garden keeps growing," she said. "If we plant faster and waste less, maybe more. I changed the numbers last night. We can do it." She looked at Elowen, and for a momen

"Only for a second.""Come here. Put your hand here."She knelt and laid her palm on the hull. At first she felt nothing but cold wood. Then, very slowly, a deep, soft shaking rose up through her fingers. It was not loud. It was like the purr of a giant cat, sleeping far away."How long?" she asked."Four nights. Maybe five. I thought it was the generator, but we turn that off at six. I thought it was the waves, but the water is flat." He pulled his hand back and looked at it as if it belonge

Elowen stood in the yard and watched Caspian Vale eat.He sat at the end of the long table with a bowl of hot soup in both hands. At first he did not use the spoon. He just held the bowl and let the steam touch his face, like a man who had forgotten what warm felt like. His boots were taped together. His jacket was torn from the fight at the north camp. Dried blood ran across his knuckles.Nobody sat near him. The people of Lantern Point ate in quiet and looked at him from the corners of their eyes. Everyone knew who he was. Wren had told the story in the first week, and stories move fast at a long table."That is the husband?" Mara whispered to Goldie."Ex-husband," Goldie said. "And yes."Briar sat across from him with Pip pressed against her side. She had not let go of his hand since the gate. She did not touch her soup. She only looked at his hair, his small ears, and the lily dirt under his nails, as if she was counting every part of him."Mama, you have to eat," Pip said. "Aunt

Chapter 33Elowen did not sleep that night. She lay in bed with her bandaged hands on her chest, listening to the wind. The wind was quiet. No clicking. No gunshots. Lantern Point was cold and dark and safe. But her mind would not rest.Silver leaves. Cold bodies. Ashen that could not find heat. She kept seeing the three Ashen at the gate stop when cold water with silver leaves hit them. They did not attack. They turned away, confused, like they forgot why they came. What if silver leaves did more than make people cold? What if they could make Ashen cold too? What if they could make them remember? At four in the morning, she got up and went down to the Hollow Garden. The silver room was brighter than before. The tall Lantern Lily in the middle glowed white, not gold. Its light made the silver plants shine like small moons.Elowen knelt and touched the soil. It was cold under her palm, then warm, then cold again."Are you trying to tell me something?" she whispered. The Garden pulsed o

Chapter 32Elowen woke up with bandage on her hands and ash on her pillow. Her hands still hurt from the hot wheel at the depot, but the pain was less. Goldie had put cold cloth on them all night. When Elowen pulled off the bandage, her palms were red, not black. That was good.Downstairs, the house was already loud. Thirty-six people meant thirty-six breakfasts. Mara and her daughters were making porridge. Teo was carrying wood. The old carpenter from Millerton was fixing a broken chair like he promised. Pip was running around with a small green leaf in his hand."Aunt Elo! Look!" Pip shouted, holding the leaf up. "Silver leaf! From Garden! It is cold!"Elowen took it. It was one of the silver leaves from the new room that opened last night. It felt cold in her hand, like metal left in river water. But her burned palms felt better when she touched it."Where did you get this?" she asked."Saskia gave me one," Pip said. "She said Garden grew new room and leaves are cold. She said mayb
