Chapter 30 — What She Was Supposed To Be

Austin found the same crew assigned to two jobs before noon.

Four people stood beside the work board with tools in hand, each waiting for the other group to leave first. One note sent them to shore up a fence. Another sent them to clear the fallen branches from the path used by the supply carts. Both notes had been copied from the week before. Neither had been crossed out.

It was not a disaster. The fence could wait another hour. The carts could use the longer way around. Still, the mistake sat on the board like a thumbprint. Somebody had seen the overlap before. Somebody had changed the notes, moved people, and made it look as if the work had always arranged itself.

Hallie had done that.

Austin scraped the old paper loose with his thumbnail and told two workers to take the path while the other two stayed with the fence. They obeyed without argument. They were not looking to him for a lesson. They were looking for the next instruction, and he gave it because that was what an Alpha was supposed to do.

The board was quiet again after they left. Austin stared at the gap where the duplicate note had been.

He could have called it a small oversight. He almost did. But Hallie had never treated small things as beneath notice. She had asked who would be delayed by a bad schedule. She had remembered which person could lift a fallen rail alone and which one would pretend he could until he hurt himself. At the time, Austin had thought she enjoyed being useful.

Now he understood that usefulness had been work. He had simply been standing close enough to benefit from it.

A runner arrived before he could decide what to do with that thought. The young man had dust on his boots and held out a folded message without looking at Austin for long.

“From Cedar Draw,” he said.

Austin took it. The paper had been creased twice, then opened again. The message was brief. A resident had spoken against Hallie taking on authority there. Others had questioned whether Grant’s wife could offer help without making it an order.

For a moment, Austin felt something close to satisfaction. Cedar Draw saw the problem. Hallie had gone there to build a place for herself, and even there people had noticed that she did not belong in the shape she was trying to take.

The mate bond tightened under his ribs as if it agreed. It carried no words. It did not have to. The pull toward her made the conclusion feel clean: Cedar Draw would not keep her. Eventually she would see what she had traded away.

He read the message again.

There was no mention of Hallie leaving. No request for him to send for her. No proof that she had failed. Only resistance. Only people who had watched her step forward and decided they did not want to make room.

Austin folded the paper along the old creases. He should have felt reassured. The political arrangement he had chosen remained necessary. Bellamy’s security still depended on it. His future had been built on a decision that could not be unmade because the bond hurt or because a work board needed clearer notes.

He repeated those facts until they sounded like something solid.

But memory would not leave him alone. Hallie in the rooms where Bellamy made its plans, sitting straighter than anyone twice her age. Hallie catching a question nobody else had heard and asking it again before a bad answer could become policy. Hallie stepping aside when a better idea appeared, then making sure it was carried through.

She had been trained for Luna work long before anyone had promised her the title. Not the ceremony. Not the place at an Alpha’s side. The work under it. The endless attention that kept other people’s choices from becoming costs they could not afford.

Austin had known that. He had loved it in her when it made him look prepared.

He had also decided it was not enough to choose her.

The thought landed with a force that made him put one hand flat on the work board. He had told himself he had rejected a future that lacked the protection Bellamy needed. That had always been the version he could survive. It made him careful. It made him dutiful. It made Hallie the private wound inside a public choice.

The message from Cedar Draw made that story harder to keep.

If they did not want Hallie to have authority, they were not proving that she lacked it. They were proving that they did not know what to do with a woman who could see the work before it broke open in front of them.

Austin looked toward the path the runner had taken. He imagined her there, being watched for the wrong reason, having every useful motion measured against Grant’s name. The image should have made him certain she would return. Instead, he remembered Hallie refusing to let people make her smaller just because they preferred an easier shape.

She would not fail simply because Cedar Draw made her earn every inch.

That was the part he could not make the bond tell him. The bond wanted proximity. It wanted the old answer, the familiar claim that if she came back, something in him would stop hurting. Hallie had never been an answer he was entitled to keep.

The realization hurt more than the bond. Austin had refused not only the woman he wanted, but the future she had been ready to build beside him.

He placed the Cedar Draw message beneath the clear work board, where the next person could find it if needed. Then he pulled a blank sheet free and began rewriting the week’s assignments himself. The work was still there.

The room did not become easier after people returned to the shelves.Hallie could still feel the argument in the way one worker chose the far side of a stack instead of passing close to her, and in the glance that went to Grant before it came to her. Nothing had been settled. Grant had only made it impossible for anyone to pretend the question belonged to him alone. He stood near the passage, speaking quietly to someone about the unstable board. He did not look back at Hallie for an answer she had not offered. The restraint left the air around her painfully open. For a moment, she wanted to walk out. She knew how easily anything useful she did could become another claim: Grant’s wife rearranging shelves, telling people where supplies belonged, making herself unavoidable until nobody could say no. Bellamy Creek had trained her to enter a room as if it had been waiting for her. Cedar Draw had no reason to welcome that training.Caleb came around the e

Grant saw the conversation gather before anyone asked him to join it.A few people had remained near the shelves after Hallie settled the bundle. Their attention was fixed on her, but their bodies angled toward him. He knew that posture. It was the shape people made when they wanted an Alpha to turn an argument into an order.Hallie stood by the lower shelf with dust on her hands. The worker who had refused her first suggestion was still there too. Grant had watched her accept the no, ask what she had missed, and change the plan without making the man pay for correcting her.A loose board at the edge of the passage tipped under a worker’s heel. The bundle above it lurched toward the floor. Grant caught the side of it, set the board flat with his boot, and waited until the weight was steady again. The worker carried the bundle on without a word. The interruption lasted only a moment. It did not empty the room of its purpose.“You should

The worker led Hallie to the far end of the room without explaining on the way.Two dry bundles remained on the floor beside the shelves. The repair had freed space along the wall, but the open path had made the corner look larger than it was. One bundle had been set down where people could reach it. The other had been left where it kept the lower shelf from opening fully.“If we put that one against the wall,” Hallie said, “the passage stays clear and the shelf can open.”The worker did not reach for the bundle. “No.”The word was quiet. It still landed with the force of a door closing. For an instant, Hallie’s mind reached for the familiar responses: explain the reason, point to the clear path, prove that the bundle would be safer where she had chosen. Each one would have made the worker’s refusal sound like a delay instead of information.Grant stood several steps behind them, near the doorw

Hallie did not leave Cedar Draw’s answer behind her when she went back inside. It followed her in the changed pauses, in the way two workers lowered their voices when she crossed the room, and in the careful distance some people kept between her and the work that had once been simply work. The roof was repaired. The shelves were dry. None of that had made the room easier to stand in.Grant was at the table with Caleb, sorting the few things that still needed to be put away. Hallie stopped beside the open doorway instead of joining them. The place beside Grant was available. She could feel that without looking at him. She also knew what it would look like if she took it now.One of the workers noticed her hesitation. “You have something else to say?”Hallie looked at the people still in the room. Some had helped with the roof. Some had argued about the board. Some had done both. There was no single face to persuade.“Only thi

By morning, nobody had forgotten the word Luna. Hallie could tell by the way some conversations paused when she crossed the yard. She went to work anyway. Her assignment was inventory in the stores, followed by helping move a delivery that had arrived late the previous evening. Nothing about it was different from the work she had done before marrying Grant.Hallie was checking supply sheets when a woman from one of the repair crews appeared in the doorway.“Do you have a minute?”“For what?”“We have two jobs waiting on the same tools.”“Caleb knows?”“He’s with the unloading crew.”“Then he’ll decide when he gets back.”The woman frowned.“You could look.”Hallie almost said no. Yesterday’s argument had made usefulness itself complicated. Hallie looked at the woman’s face before answering.Thi
