The last page of the agreement had been copied twice before Hallie realized the young Alpha was still watching her. Not staring. Waiting.

Grant had taken one copy outside to compare a timing note with Caleb. Two of the visitor’s people were near the doorway, speaking quietly over the travel schedule. Nothing about the room was private.

Hallie preferred it that way. She capped the ink.

“Something else?”

The young Alpha glanced toward the finished pages.

“Not about the agreement.”

Hallie’s shoulders tightened. He noticed.

“I can leave it unsaid.”

“That usually makes things worse.”

A brief smile touched his mouth.

“I suspected you would say that.”

Hallie leaned back in her chair.

“All right.”

He kept the distance.

“I find you interesting.”

She waited.

“Politically?”

“No.”

The answer came without careful wording or a compliment hidden inside another discussion about her training or Cedar Draw. Heat rose under Hallie’s skin; the reaction irritated her for half a second before she stopped fighting it. He was attractive.

She had known that since he arrived.

He was close to her age, easy to speak with, and fluent in a world she had spent most of her life learning to navigate. He listened when she disagreed. He did not need her to translate why her training mattered before he could see its value.

Of course some part of her responded to him. Pretending otherwise would not make her more loyal to Grant.

“What are you asking me?” she said.

“Nothing.”

Hallie studied him. He held her gaze.

“I know you are married. I am not asking you to betray your husband.”

The directness made her chest loosen rather than tighten.

“I’m also not challenging Grant,” he continued. “I have no claim to make against him, and I’m not going to manufacture one because I admire his wife.”

Hallie looked toward the doorway. Grant was visible across the yard, bent over the paper Caleb held between them. No one in the room had lowered their voice.

No one was arranging a secret. She looked back.

“Then why tell me?”

“Because after the last few days, pretending my interest is entirely political would be dishonest.”

“That could still have been your problem to manage.”

“Yes.”

The answer came without offense. Hallie appreciated that too. The young Alpha rested one hand on the closed folder in front of him.

“I also don’t want you looking back at every compliment I gave you and wondering whether I meant the work.”

Hallie went still.

“I did mean it,” he said. “Your judgment improved this agreement. Your training is obvious. So is the fact that you’ve learned when not to use it the way you were taught.”

The warmth under Hallie’s skin changed shape. Not less dangerous. More complicated.

“And you’re attracted to me.”

“Yes.”

She could have wished the answer were less clean. Instead, she respected it. Hallie looked down at the copied agreement.

The attraction she felt in return was real enough that she did not need to inspect it until it became a confession. She also did not need to punish herself for it. Marriage had not made every other man invisible.

It had made certain choices hers to refuse. Hallie raised her eyes.

“Then here is the boundary.”

He nodded once.

“You do not bring this into the agreement.”

“I won’t.”

“You do not make Grant compete with you.”

“I won’t.”

“You do not use Cedar Draw as an excuse to create reasons to stay close to me.”

His expression sobered.

“I won’t.”

“And while I am married, you do not court me.”

A pause. Not resistance. Weight.

Then he said, “Understood.”

Hallie watched him for another moment.

“You say that easily.”

“It is not difficult to understand.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

His mouth curved, but the smile did not quite arrive.

“I know.”

He gathered the remaining pages and slid them into his folder.

“I can be interested in you without treating that interest as permission.”

Hallie’s fingers tightened around the pen. The sentence should not have felt unusual. It did.

“Thank you for being honest,” she said.

“You’re welcome.”

“And thank you for stopping where I asked.”

His gaze held hers.

“You shouldn’t have to thank me for that.”

Hallie almost told him that he would be surprised what women were taught to be grateful for. She let the thought pass. This was not Bellamy Creek.

It was not a lesson. The young Alpha stood.

“So we are clear?”

“We’re clear.”

“No damage to the negotiation?”

“That depends on whether you meant what you just agreed to.”

“I did.”

“Then no.”

He nodded. For one second, the ease between them remained. Hallie could feel the attraction without feeding it.

Could appreciate the man in front of her without turning appreciation into a promise. That was all. He stepped away from the table before Grant returned.

By the time Grant came through the doorway, the young Alpha was speaking to one of his own people about departure timing. Grant stopped beside Hallie.

“Done?”

“Yes.”

His gaze moved over her face. Hallie wondered whether he was close enough to feel anything from her. Maybe curiosity.

Maybe the last edge of embarrassment. Maybe the steadier warmth she always noticed when he came near now. Grant did not ask.

He picked up the second copy of the agreement.

“Caleb found one timing problem.”

“Of course he did.”

“It’s small.”

“They’re never small when he says that.”

Grant’s mouth shifted. Hallie stood. Across the room, the young Alpha glanced toward her once.

Nothing in the young Alpha’s expression asked for more. Hallie gave him a polite nod. He returned it and looked away. The boundary held.

Grant tucked the second copy beneath his arm and glanced toward the doorway Caleb had taken.

Hallie followed the look, grateful for an ordinary problem that required no interpretation of anyone’s feelings.

Work gave them somewhere clean to put their attention.

Together, they went to find it.

Hallie woke before Grant and stayed still for several seconds. His arm was heavy across her waist. The room was still gray with early light, quiet enough that she could hear his breathing and the faint sounds of Cedar Draw waking beyond the walls.Nothing about the morning looked different. That felt important.Hallie’s name had gained no title overnight. Grant was no easier for other packs to understand, and the mate bond with Austin still existed as a distant pull she could not erase simply because she had chosen something else. And the man beside her was still the man she had chosen. Hallie shifted carefully. Grant’s eyes opened.“You can move,” he said, voice rough with sleep.“I was trying not to wake you.”“Failed.”She smiled. His arm loosened immediately. Hallie noticed that too.Even now, after the night they had shared, he did not assume closeness gave him ownersh

By nightfall, Cedar Draw felt like itself again. The visiting party was gone. The signed agreement had been put away where Caleb could find it tomorrow. Someone had already complained about a stores count, someone else had left muddy boots where they did not belong, and dinner had ended with three separate arguments that had nothing to do with politics.Hallie had missed ordinary problems. She finished helping clear the long table and looked toward the corridor. Grant had disappeared sometime after the meal. Not avoiding her. She knew the difference now. Hallie found him in his room with his sleeves rolled to his forearms, folding a shirt that had no reason to require that much attention. She leaned against the doorframe.“You know that’s already folded.”Grant looked down at it.“So it is.”Hallie smiled. The room was quiet. For days, every meaningful conversation between them had seemed to

  • Reborn After Rejection: I Chose the Alpha Everyone Feared   Chapter 73 — He Heard

The first page of the report concerned the agreement. Austin read it carefully.Cedar Draw and the visiting pack had signed. The arrangement recognized responsibility by function instead of forcing Cedar Draw into traditional ranks. There were limits for temporary contacts, a review process for disputed changes, and protections for work already underway.Useful. Orderly. The kind of political result Austin would normally have studied for weaknesses before deciding whether it mattered to Bellamy Creek. He turned the page. The next lines stopped him. The young Alpha’s interest in Hallie had been real. Not rumor. Not the easy speculation people made whenever an unmarried Alpha spoke too often to an attractive woman. He had wanted her as his wife if she were ever free to choose. He had been willing to make her Luna. Austin read the paragraph again. His hand tightened on the paper. The mate bond pulled beneath his ribs, immediate and famili

Hallie had expected certainty to feel cleaner. It did not.The visiting party was gone. The agreement remained. Cedar Draw had returned to its ordinary noise, as if several days of negotiation and one impossible alternative had not rearranged anything inside her.By evening, Hallie found Grant in the common room with the signed copy open on his knee. He looked up when she approached.“Checking it again?”“Once.”“You’ve said that before.”“Then this is the last once.”Hallie sat beside him. There was enough space on the bench that she did not need to touch him. She did anyway. Her shoulder settled against his upper arm first. Then, after a moment, she let herself lean until part of her weight rested on him.Grant went still. Not tense. Careful.Hallie looked at the agreement instead of his face.“I meant what I told him.”Grant did not

Grant knew Hallie had made a choice before she told him what it was.She had crossed the yard after speaking to the young Alpha and taken Grant’s hand without hesitation. She had stayed beside him while the visiting party prepared to leave. That could have meant several things. Grant refused to decide which one. He waited until they were away from the others.Hallie found him near the common room after the last travel arrangements had been settled. The young Alpha’s people were still in Cedar Draw, but most of their things had already been carried out.Grant looked at her.“You don’t have to tell me anything before you’re ready.”“I know.”She stopped in front of him.“I told him no.”Relief hit so fast Grant almost hated it.It loosened something in his chest before he could stop it. • Reborn After Rejection: I Chose the Alpha Everyone Feared   Chapter 70 — I Chose My Husband

Hallie found him before the visiting party was ready to leave.People were already carrying the last of their things across the yard. The signed agreement had been packed with the other papers. Nothing political remained unfinished between the two packs. One thing remained. The young Alpha saw her coming and stepped away from the others without taking her anywhere private, a choice Hallie appreciated.“You said you would answer me,” he said.“I did.”He waited. Hallie had spent most of the night trying to find a version that would be kind without being false. There wasn’t one.So she started with the truth that made the answer hardest.“You are a good choice.”His expression did not change.“You’re respected. You listen. You don’t need me to explain why the work I was trained for matters. With you, I could walk into a role everyone already understands.”
