Hallie arrived at the common room with the revised clause marked in three places. Grant was there. So was the young Alpha.

Hallie set the page between them and took her seat.

“I want to try something different.”

The visitor looked at the marks.

“Different from yesterday?”

“Different from forcing every material change back to the two Alphas.”

“That was the cost of refusing a permanent ranked counterpart.”

“I know.”

Hallie turned the page toward him.

“What if the agreement identifies responsibility by function instead of title?”

He did not answer immediately. Good. She had not brought the idea here to be admired.

“For example?” he asked.

“If the question belongs to stores, the person Cedar Draw already trusts with stores can approve a limited change. Same for crew timing. The agreement names the function, the person, and the limit.”

The young Alpha studied her. “So I still know who can bind Cedar Draw, but only for the work already in that person’s hands.”

“Exactly.”

“And when the person changes?”

“The replacement is recorded before the authority moves.”

He tapped the page.

“And if a change affects more than one function?”

Hallie stopped. Her first answer would only move the same confusion somewhere harder to see.

She crossed out a sentence. “Then the people responsible for both parts have to agree.”

“And if they don’t?”

Grant answered this time. “Then it comes to us.”

The young Alpha nodded. “Both Alphas.”

“Only then,” Hallie said.

The visitor leaned back.

“You have distributed authority without creating a permanent second.”

“Yes.”

“My pack will still want a name attached to each function,” the young Alpha said.

“Names are fine. Titles aren’t required.”

His next objection was practical: what happened when the named person suddenly became unavailable?

Hallie proposed a narrow fallback—one acting contact, one timing correction, no new quantity or cost.

The young Alpha read the line twice. “That I can defend.”

Not accept. Defend. Hallie liked the difference.

They cut the remaining language until neither side could use an emergency as an excuse to claim authority it had never been given.

By the end, the clause was smaller, slower, and honest enough to survive outside the room.

They spent another half hour cutting language that gave either side room to pretend the limits meant something they did not. Grant spoke when the agreement touched Cedar Draw’s commitments. Hallie handled the mechanics.

The young Alpha challenged both of them. By the time he set his pen down, the broader clause from two days ago had not returned. They had not recovered all of it.

But they had recovered enough.

Routine corrections could move without climbing the entire chain. A temporary absence would not freeze the agreement. Authority remained tied to the work instead of permanent rank.

Hallie read the final paragraph once more.

“Less flexible than the version we lost.”

“Yes,” the young Alpha said.

“But better than yesterday.”

“Also yes.”

Grant looked at Hallie.

“You did that.”

She shook her head.

“We did.”

The visitor closed his folder.

“No.”

Hallie looked at him.

“You found the structure I could take home without asking Cedar Draw to lie about itself.”

His tone stayed professional.

“Grant gained more than a wife when you came here.”

Hallie went still. He continued before the sentence could become anything else.

“Bellamy Creek lost more than a future Luna.”

No flirtation. No invitation. Only judgment.

Hallie felt the recognition land somewhere deep. She appreciated it. But when she looked at the page, the satisfaction came from a different place. For years, praise had often arrived attached to the future Bellamy Creek expected from her. This was different. The young Alpha had watched her argue against the easier structure even when the easier structure would have benefited her personally, and he had understood the cost.

The agreement was useful again. Not because she had accepted the role everyone would have understood. Because she had made another structure understandable enough to work.

The meeting ended soon after. Outside, Grant stopped beside the work board. Hallie came to stand next to him.

For a second, she considered reaching for his hand. She did not. Instead, she leaned against him. Grant’s shoulder was solid against hers, warm through the fabric. The contact asked nothing from either of them. Hallie let herself use it anyway, not as reassurance that she had chosen correctly, but as a place to put the fatigue of having fought for the choice.

Just enough to let some of her weight rest along his side. Grant stayed still. Hallie closed her eyes for one breath.

“That was exhausting.”

“I noticed.”

She opened her eyes.

“We got some of it back.”

“You got some of it back.”

Hallie did not argue this time. She remained against him for another few seconds before standing on her own again. The easier structure was still gone.

The cost of refusing it was still real. But the page in her hand no longer looked like a punishment for choosing differently. It looked like something she had earned back on her own terms. She liked that.

Hallie woke before Grant and stayed still for several seconds. His arm was heavy across her waist. The room was still gray with early light, quiet enough that she could hear his breathing and the faint sounds of Cedar Draw waking beyond the walls.Nothing about the morning looked different. That felt important.Hallie’s name had gained no title overnight. Grant was no easier for other packs to understand, and the mate bond with Austin still existed as a distant pull she could not erase simply because she had chosen something else. And the man beside her was still the man she had chosen. Hallie shifted carefully. Grant’s eyes opened.“You can move,” he said, voice rough with sleep.“I was trying not to wake you.”“Failed.”She smiled. His arm loosened immediately. Hallie noticed that too.Even now, after the night they had shared, he did not assume closeness gave him ownersh

By nightfall, Cedar Draw felt like itself again. The visiting party was gone. The signed agreement had been put away where Caleb could find it tomorrow. Someone had already complained about a stores count, someone else had left muddy boots where they did not belong, and dinner had ended with three separate arguments that had nothing to do with politics.Hallie had missed ordinary problems. She finished helping clear the long table and looked toward the corridor. Grant had disappeared sometime after the meal. Not avoiding her. She knew the difference now. Hallie found him in his room with his sleeves rolled to his forearms, folding a shirt that had no reason to require that much attention. She leaned against the doorframe.“You know that’s already folded.”Grant looked down at it.“So it is.”Hallie smiled. The room was quiet. For days, every meaningful conversation between them had seemed to

The first page of the report concerned the agreement. Austin read it carefully.Cedar Draw and the visiting pack had signed. The arrangement recognized responsibility by function instead of forcing Cedar Draw into traditional ranks. There were limits for temporary contacts, a review process for disputed changes, and protections for work already underway.Useful. Orderly. The kind of political result Austin would normally have studied for weaknesses before deciding whether it mattered to Bellamy Creek. He turned the page. The next lines stopped him. The young Alpha’s interest in Hallie had been real. Not rumor. Not the easy speculation people made whenever an unmarried Alpha spoke too often to an attractive woman. He had wanted her as his wife if she were ever free to choose. He had been willing to make her Luna. Austin read the paragraph again. His hand tightened on the paper. The mate bond pulled beneath his ribs, immediate and famili

Hallie had expected certainty to feel cleaner. It did not.The visiting party was gone. The agreement remained. Cedar Draw had returned to its ordinary noise, as if several days of negotiation and one impossible alternative had not rearranged anything inside her.By evening, Hallie found Grant in the common room with the signed copy open on his knee. He looked up when she approached.“Checking it again?”“Once.”“You’ve said that before.”“Then this is the last once.”Hallie sat beside him. There was enough space on the bench that she did not need to touch him. She did anyway. Her shoulder settled against his upper arm first. Then, after a moment, she let herself lean until part of her weight rested on him.Grant went still. Not tense. Careful.Hallie looked at the agreement instead of his face.“I meant what I told him.”Grant did not

Grant knew Hallie had made a choice before she told him what it was.She had crossed the yard after speaking to the young Alpha and taken Grant’s hand without hesitation. She had stayed beside him while the visiting party prepared to leave. That could have meant several things. Grant refused to decide which one. He waited until they were away from the others.Hallie found him near the common room after the last travel arrangements had been settled. The young Alpha’s people were still in Cedar Draw, but most of their things had already been carried out.Grant looked at her.“You don’t have to tell me anything before you’re ready.”“I know.”She stopped in front of him.“I told him no.”Relief hit so fast Grant almost hated it.It loosened something in his chest before he could stop it. Beneath that came satisfaction, warmer and sharper.Hallie had b

Hallie found him before the visiting party was ready to leave.People were already carrying the last of their things across the yard. The signed agreement had been packed with the other papers. Nothing political remained unfinished between the two packs. One thing remained. The young Alpha saw her coming and stepped away from the others without taking her anywhere private, a choice Hallie appreciated.“You said you would answer me,” he said.“I did.”He waited. Hallie had spent most of the night trying to find a version that would be kind without being false. There wasn’t one.So she started with the truth that made the answer hardest.“You are a good choice.”His expression did not change.“You’re respected. You listen. You don’t need me to explain why the work I was trained for matters. With you, I could walk into a role everyone already understands.”
