Hallie learned about the first objection while carrying a crate.

Grant had not told her.

Caleb had not, either.

From the man on the other end of it.

“You don’t have to do this anymore,” he said as they crossed the yard.

Hallie adjusted her grip. “Why?”

He looked almost embarrassed. “You’re marrying Grant.”

The crate was not especially heavy, but the answer made it feel heavier.

“So?”

“So you don’t need to be on regular rotation.”

Hallie kept walking.

“Yes, I do.”

He glanced at her as if she had missed the obvious. “Grant can assign somebody else.”

“Grant didn’t assign me here because I was going to marry him.”

“No.”

“Then marrying him doesn’t finish the work.”

The man said nothing until they set the crate down beside the storage shed.

Hallie straightened and wiped her palms against her pants.

He hesitated.

“I didn’t mean anything by it.”

“I know.”

That was true.

Which made the problem more important, not less.

The moment Grant’s proposal became known, people had begun looking at Hallie differently. Most were only curious. A few seemed amused by the speed of it. Others had given her the cautious, measuring look people used when they were trying to understand whether someone’s position had changed before anyone announced new rules.

Hallie knew that look.

She had grown up around hierarchy.

By noon, she found Grant near one of the work tables reviewing a list with Caleb.

He glanced up when she approached.

“What happened?”

Hallie stopped.

“How do you know something happened?”

“You’re holding that pencil like it insulted you.”

Caleb looked at the pencil, then at her.

Hallie loosened her fingers.

“One of the men told me I didn’t need to work regular rotation anymore.”

Grant’s expression did not change. “Did I tell him that?”

“No.”

“Did Caleb?”

“No,” Caleb said.

Hallie looked between them. “That isn’t the point.”

“I know,” Grant said.

Of course he did.

She exhaled.

“I don’t want anyone deciding that marrying you gives me authority I haven’t earned.”

“It doesn’t.”

“And I don’t want easier work.”

“You won’t get it.”

Caleb’s mouth twitched.

Hallie ignored him. “No special quarters, no separate meals, no people reassigned because I’m supposed to be above something now.”

Grant set the list down.

“Hallie.”

“What?”

“You’re still on the same rotation.”

She waited.

“That’s it?” she asked.

“That’s it.”

Something in her chest eased.

Grant had offered marriage because it would make her choice visible beyond Cedar Draw. She had understood the logic.

She had not fully considered what the marriage might imply inside Cedar Draw.

Bellamy Creek would have known exactly what an Alpha’s wife was supposed to become.

Cedar Draw had no reason to accept the same answer.

“Some people may assume otherwise,” Grant said.

“I noticed.”

“They’ll stop when the work doesn’t.”

Hallie looked at him.

Grant left her job exactly where it had been and walked on. The yard kept moving around them.

The restraint mattered.

More than she wanted to admit.

A voice sounded from behind them.

“Grant.”

One of the men from the outer watch crossed the yard at a quick pace.

Hallie knew something had changed before he reached them. Conversations nearby thinned. Caleb straightened.

Grant waited.

The man stopped. “Bellamy Creek Alpha at the border.”

The mate bond tightened.

Hallie’s breath caught.

Austin.

For a moment, Cedar Draw disappeared behind the sensation.

The bond had always been present, a living thread stretched across distance. Now it pulled with sudden force, not enough to move her body but enough to tell her what the messenger already had.

Austin was close.

Too close.

Grant’s attention shifted to her.

His attention stayed on her face, waiting.

That somehow made it worse.

Caleb said, “Did he request entry?”

“He identified himself and said he came to speak with Hallie.”

Several people nearby were openly listening now.

Hallie could already feel the story forming around her.

Rejected mate.

New fiancé.

Old Alpha at the border.

If Grant walked out there first, everyone would understand this as a confrontation between two men.

If Grant refused Austin entry without asking her, the marriage would become exactly what she had promised herself it would not be: another structure deciding what happened to her.

Grant looked at the messenger.

Then at Hallie.

“What do you want?”

The question cut cleanly through the noise in her head.

Hallie swallowed.

In her first life, Austin’s arrival would have been everything. She would have searched his face for regret before he even spoke. She would have treated the bond’s pull as proof that whatever came next belonged to them.

Now Grant stood a few feet away and did nothing with his authority.

He waited.

Hallie looked toward the road leading out of Cedar Draw.

“I’ll see him.”

Grant nodded once.

Grant gave her neither warning nor condition.

He waited for Hallie to decide where she wanted him.

He let the choice stand.

Caleb glanced at him. “You want me there?”

Grant kept his gaze on Hallie.

“That’s her decision.”

The mate bond pulled again.

Hallie hated that her body recognized Austin’s nearness so easily.

She also understood, suddenly, why Grant’s restraint felt more intimate than protection would have.

He could have made the moment about being Alpha.

He had chosen not to.

“I’ll talk to him,” Hallie said.

Grant’s jaw tightened slightly, but he stepped aside.

“Then go.”

Hallie handed Caleb the pencil and took two steps before stopping. “Grant.”

He looked at her. “Come with me,” she said. “Stay back unless I ask.”

“Your call.” Grant waited until she started walking, then followed several paces behind. With every step, the bond grew more insistent.

By the time the trees opened onto the road, she could feel Austin so strongly that memory and instinct threatened to overlap.

Then she saw him.

Tall. Sandy-brown hair. Blue-gray eyes fixed on her before she had fully stepped into view.

Her fated mate stood inside Cedar Draw.

The first thing Hallie felt was the weight of everything she had chosen since leaving him.

Austin found the same crew assigned to two jobs before noon.Four people stood beside the work board with tools in hand, each waiting for the other group to leave first. One note sent them to shore up a fence. Another sent them to clear the fallen branches from the path used by the supply carts. Both notes had been copied from the week before. Neither had been crossed out.It was not a disaster. The fence could wait another hour. The carts could use the longer way around. Still, the mistake sat on the board like a thumbprint. Somebody had seen the overlap before. Somebody had changed the notes, moved people, and made it look as if the work had always arranged itself.Hallie had done that.Austin scraped the old paper loose with his thumbnail and told two workers to take the path while the other two stayed with the fence. They obeyed without argument. They were not looking to him for a lesson. They were looking for the next instruction, and he gave it beca

The room did not become easier after people returned to the shelves.Hallie could still feel the argument in the way one worker chose the far side of a stack instead of passing close to her, and in the glance that went to Grant before it came to her. Nothing had been settled. Grant had only made it impossible for anyone to pretend the question belonged to him alone. He stood near the passage, speaking quietly to someone about the unstable board. He did not look back at Hallie for an answer she had not offered. The restraint left the air around her painfully open. For a moment, she wanted to walk out. She knew how easily anything useful she did could become another claim: Grant’s wife rearranging shelves, telling people where supplies belonged, making herself unavoidable until nobody could say no. Bellamy Creek had trained her to enter a room as if it had been waiting for her. Cedar Draw had no reason to welcome that training.Caleb came around the e

  • Reborn After Rejection: I Chose the Alpha Everyone Feared   Chapter 28 — Let Her Answer

Grant saw the conversation gather before anyone asked him to join it.A few people had remained near the shelves after Hallie settled the bundle. Their attention was fixed on her, but their bodies angled toward him. He knew that posture. It was the shape people made when they wanted an Alpha to turn an argument into an order.Hallie stood by the lower shelf with dust on her hands. The worker who had refused her first suggestion was still there too. Grant had watched her accept the no, ask what she had missed, and change the plan without making the man pay for correcting her.A loose board at the edge of the passage tipped under a worker’s heel. The bundle above it lurched toward the floor. Grant caught the side of it, set the board flat with his boot, and waited until the weight was steady again. The worker carried the bundle on without a word. The interruption lasted only a moment. It did not empty the room of its purpose.“You should

The worker led Hallie to the far end of the room without explaining on the way.Two dry bundles remained on the floor beside the shelves. The repair had freed space along the wall, but the open path had made the corner look larger than it was. One bundle had been set down where people could reach it. The other had been left where it kept the lower shelf from opening fully.“If we put that one against the wall,” Hallie said, “the passage stays clear and the shelf can open.”The worker did not reach for the bundle. “No.”The word was quiet. It still landed with the force of a door closing. For an instant, Hallie’s mind reached for the familiar responses: explain the reason, point to the clear path, prove that the bundle would be safer where she had chosen. Each one would have made the worker’s refusal sound like a delay instead of information.Grant stood several steps behind them, near the doorw

  • Reborn After Rejection: I Chose the Alpha Everyone Feared   Chapter 26 — Not Sent There

Hallie did not leave Cedar Draw’s answer behind her when she went back inside. It followed her in the changed pauses, in the way two workers lowered their voices when she crossed the room, and in the careful distance some people kept between her and the work that had once been simply work. The roof was repaired. The shelves were dry. None of that had made the room easier to stand in.Grant was at the table with Caleb, sorting the few things that still needed to be put away. Hallie stopped beside the open doorway instead of joining them. The place beside Grant was available. She could feel that without looking at him. She also knew what it would look like if she took it now.One of the workers noticed her hesitation. “You have something else to say?”Hallie looked at the people still in the room. Some had helped with the roof. Some had argued about the board. Some had done both. There was no single face to persuade.“Only thi

By morning, nobody had forgotten the word Luna. Hallie could tell by the way some conversations paused when she crossed the yard. She went to work anyway. Her assignment was inventory in the stores, followed by helping move a delivery that had arrived late the previous evening. Nothing about it was different from the work she had done before marrying Grant.Hallie was checking supply sheets when a woman from one of the repair crews appeared in the doorway.“Do you have a minute?”“For what?”“We have two jobs waiting on the same tools.”“Caleb knows?”“He’s with the unloading crew.”“Then he’ll decide when he gets back.”The woman frowned.“You could look.”Hallie almost said no. Yesterday’s argument had made usefulness itself complicated. Hallie looked at the woman’s face before answering.Thi
