Greyhaven did not look like a place waiting to be saved. The wagon crossed the last ridge after midnight, wheels grinding over frozen ruts.

Lorelai had expected broken fences, drunken sentries, and the disorder Moonridge associated with rogues. Instead, two guards stepped from the trees before the settlement came into view.

Neither wore a pack crest. They checked the wagon before Karl leaned toward the nearer guard.

“Road report,” Karl said.

“How many?”

“Three riders. No approach.”

“Double the eastern watch,” Karl said.

The guards moved before he finished speaking. No Alpha command rolled through the air. No wolf bent them. They obeyed because the instruction fit a system they trusted.

The village had scars, but it was not chaos. Every brace, patrol, and ration slate looked like proof that someone had chosen survival again that morning.

Greyhaven was not waiting to be rescued. It was fighting to stay alive.

Karl opened the door and stepped down first. His hand lifted, offered rather than imposed. Lorelai placed her fingers in his. Warmth closed around them.

He steadied her through the drop, then released her as soon as both boots reached the ground. The restraint should have made the contact forgettable. It did not.

Cold air carried leather, woodsmoke, wet earth, and the darker trace of Karl that had settled into her cloak during the journey. People waited inside the gate. Not a welcoming party.

It was a count, not a welcome. The woman with the slate recorded Karl's return, then looked at Lorelai as though a new wife might be a weapon.

“This is Lorelai Jones,” he said. “She is my wife under Moonridge law. She has no command here unless Greyhaven grants it.” The honesty struck harder than ceremonial respect would have.

“How long is she staying?” a guard asked.

“As long as she chooses,” Karl said. His voice carried no claim, only fact.

Lorelai kept her hands still. “I did not come to take anyone’s place.”

“No,” someone said from the dark. “You came with an Ashborne name.”

“My name is Jones.”

“You married one.” Karl’s attention shifted toward the voice. The crowd quieted, but not from any force Lorelai could name. They knew the limits of his patience. She stepped away from the shelter of his shoulder.

“I married Karl because Moonridge would have used the aftermath of my rejected bond and its laws to keep me at Ashborne Keep,” she said. “Greyhaven owes me nothing for that decision.”

“What do you owe Greyhaven?” the woman with the slate asked.

“Work. Obedience to the rules that protect everyone. The truth when it does not endanger someone else.”

“And when it does?” the woman asked.

“I keep the secret until the person who owns it releases me.”

It did not win trust. It did make the room quiet enough for them to hear she was not asking to be made important.

They resumed patrols, stable duty, and the last ration count as if the village mattered more than witnessing his marriage. Lorelai watched a young guard correct an older fighter’s entry on the slate.

The older man checked the number and thanked him. Greyhaven was not held together by rank. It was held together by procedures. Karl took her bag before she could object.

“I can carry it.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you?”

“Because the eastern path is iced and you have not slept since the rejection.”

It was not an order disguised as care. It was an observation followed by a task he could perform. Lorelai let him keep the bag.

His house stood at the edge of the square, built of dark stone and plain timber. It was larger than the surrounding homes only because one room served as Greyhaven’s meeting chamber.

Inside, no servants waited. Maps covered one wall. Spare weapons and sealed message tubes filled a rack near the door.

Karl led her upstairs, where two doors faced each other across a narrow landing.

“Yours,” he said, opening the left one. “Mine is there.”

The room held a bed, a washstand, a chair, and a small iron stove. Fresh blankets had been folded at the foot of the mattress. There was no connecting door.

“The lock turns from the inside,” Karl said. He set down her bag and retreated to the threshold. “No one enters without your permission. Not even me.”

Relief came first. Then an unreasonable thread of disappointment. Lorelai removed her gloves before he could read either reaction. “Thank you.”

His gaze dropped to the clasp of her cloak, where his scent had settled during the journey. Her wolf quieted for one startled beat. Karl's fingers flexed once at his side before he told her to sleep.

“Sleep,” he said, his voice rougher than before. “Greyhaven will test you tomorrow.”

“Will you?”

“I already am.” He closed the door without touching her.

Lorelai locked it. She slept badly. In the dream, Greyhaven burned beyond a wall she could not climb. Karl’s severed head struck the stones at her feet. Aria’s voice whispered that she had arrived too late again.

Lorelai woke standing in the corridor.

Cold boards pressed beneath her bare feet. She did not remember unlocking the door. The landing tilted as rejection pain tore through her ribs. Her knee buckled.

Karl crossed the space before she struck the floor.

One arm locked around her waist; the other caught her shoulder. He had been inside his closed room a heartbeat earlier. Now his body braced hers, warm and solid, while her wolf surged toward the pressure hidden beneath his skin.

“Lorelai.” His voice stayed low. “Look at me.”

She did. Moonlight cut through the stairwell window and caught his eyes. For one impossible instant, they reflected the light like a wolf’s.

Karl released her only when she stood without his support. “You were disoriented.”

“That does not explain your speed.”

His expression closed. “No.”

Karl saw the first medicine cart before he reached the eastern gate.Rain ran from the canvas in dark sheets. He passed the waiting families and the guards who had obeyed his seal, then stepped beside the healer as crates were carried through Lorelai’s controlled passage.“Where are the reserve cases?” he asked.“Still behind the third cart,” the healer said. “The infirmary has already run out of fever draughts.”Karl looked at the cordon order in the captain’s hand. His own signature was clear at the bottom. He had written it after the border fires, when the thought of anything reaching Greyhaven without his control had felt intolerable. Now a wounded man shivered beneath a blanket while a guard checked a cart seal for the second time.Karl had called the cordon temporary when he signed it. The word had made the command sound careful. It had not carried the weight of the rain, the time before

  • Reborn Before the Mark: I Married His Wolfless Uncle   Chapter 214 — The Blocked Medicines

Rain had turned the eastern gate road into a dark ribbon of mud by the time Lorelai reached it on horseback. The civilian convoy stood in two uneven lines before the barrier. Medicine carts waited beneath wet canvas. Families clustered around the injured, keeping blankets tight against the wind. The guards did not lower their weapons when Lorelai arrived, but they did make room for her to see the signed cordon order nailed to the gate post.Karl’s name marked the bottom of it.The ink had run at one edge, but the order was still readable: every cart, every passenger, every crate held until one command chain cleared them all. Lorelai understood the fear behind it. War had begun at the border. A hidden weapon or false seal could move through a frightened city. But fear did not turn a blanket, a wounded shoulder, or a box of fever draughts into an enemy by itself.Lorelai dismounted without giving the reins to a guard until she had looked at the carts,

Caelan had kept the archive key in the inner pocket of his coat for three years. It was smaller than the damage it guarded. He turned it in the lock beneath the Tribunal archive while the failure of Garrick’s command still moved through the corridors outside. The private records of the Court of Pretenders waited behind the iron door: succession pledges, sealed instructions, payment routes, and orders no public clerk had been permitted to index. Caelan had once treated that secrecy as proof that he belonged among people who made decisions before anyone else could question them. Now he opened the cabinet doors and took the ledgers out one by one.Dust had settled in the hinges and along the spine of the oldest volume. Caelan wiped none of it away. The neglect belonged to the archive as much as the locks did. He checked the seals against the inventory sheet, then wrote the time beside each cabinet number. If someone later claimed a page had been added

Greyhaven’s tribunal hall was full before Lorelai and Eve reached the inner doors.Families named in the summons crowded the outer rail. Their attendants watched every guard shift as if a gap in the line might become an argument. Lorelai walked beside Eve at the pace Eve chose, with the court clerk’s path clear ahead of them. The hall smelled of damp wool and hot wax. Every face along the rail seemed to turn when Eve entered, but Lorelai did not let the watching set their course. The guards opened a narrow route with room on both sides. Eve could see who stood there. No one could touch her without crossing a line that had been named in advance.A woman from the first row stepped toward Eve. “You cannot accuse households on the word of a frightened girl.”Lorelai raised her hand. The neutral guard moved between the woman and the rail, but Lorelai answered first. “She will speak to the tribunal. Not to anyone who wants to make

Greyhaven’s outer court was quieter than the border camp had been, but Lorelai noticed every guard before she noticed the warmth of the lamps. The carriage stopped inside the protected lodging gate. Karl stepped down first and moved aside. Lorelai took the step herself, feeling the new mark beneath her collarbone answer only as a warmth that belonged to her body.Eve waited beneath the covered walk with two neutral guards. Her bandaged hand rested against her coat. She did not come forward until Lorelai did.“You made it back,” Eve said.“We did.” Lorelai looked beyond her to the two exits from the lodging court. “Show me the guard rotation.”A captain began to answer, then paused when Lorelai lifted a hand. “I want Eve to hear it too.”Together they walked the boundary of the rooms. Lorelai checked the inner door, the rear stair, and the service passage that led to the court. Each guard

The protected camp stood where the border road narrowed between the last Vespera stones and the Greyhaven markers.Lorelai stepped down from the carriage before the Veyr attendants could offer a hand. Karl came after her, but he stopped when she stopped. Around them, guards checked the perimeter while magistrates and delegates gathered near the outer fires. The Noctis riders had disappeared east. Their absence pressed against the camp more sharply than their hoofbeats had.Lorelai watched the guards check each approach before they lowered the camp flap behind the convoy. Each name was noted. Each visitor stopped at the rope. The measures were not freedom by themselves, but they were chosen protections, visible and answerable to her. She would not exchange one closed gate for another simply because this one carried her allies’ colors.A councilor approached the marked rope at the entrance. “The courts will need a statement before nightfall.&rdq
