Chapter 2

مؤلف: Lucky Squash
Ethan didn't return until noon the next day.

He wasn't alone.

Trailing behind him was a girl in a camel trench coat, a suitcase resting beside her hand.

Vivian...

I first met Ethan during our college years.

Back then, he was already the Alpha heir of the Blood Moon Pack.

The first moment we stood near each other, the wolves inside us awakened almost simultaneously.

That pull from the depths of our bloodlines was completely irresistible.

Once we discovered we were fated mates, we quickly fell in love.

Only later did I learn that long before I ever came into the picture, there had already been a girl by Ethan's side for twenty years.

I told myself countless times that they were just friends.

Until proof of his blatant favoritism was shoved in my face again and again.

On my birthday, I waited three hours for him at a restaurant, only to receive a text:

"Vivian isn't feeling well today. I'm going over to keep her company."

Another time, I was shivering in bed with a high fever, and he promised he would come home to hold me that night.

Yet Vivian said she was terrified of the thunderstorm.

So he went to her instead.

I confronted him so many times.

Every single time, he would only sigh with exasperation:

"Elia, she really is just a friend. Stop overthinking."

Then he would take my hand, reassuring me:

"You and I are fated mates. You're the one who will be my Luna."

So I convinced myself over and over, ignoring every red flag that tore at my heart.

Looking back now, being his fated mate never changed who truly mattered most to him.

"Elia."

Ethan's voice snapped me back to reality.

"How are you feeling?"

I looked up.

"I'm fine."

He glanced at Vivian behind him, his tone carrying an edge of defensive explanation: "She terminated her apartment lease to move abroad, and her hometown is too far away. She doesn't have a place to stay right now."

"Can she stay with us for a while?"

After graduating from college, Ethan and I had moved into his apartment.

I had personally decorated every corner of that home, but now, none of it mattered to me anymore.

I said flatly:

"Whatever."

Vivian's eyes instantly welled with tears, and she gently tugged on Ethan's sleeve.

"Ethan, is Elia upset? Maybe I should just leave."

Ethan immediately stepped in front of her, shielding her.

"It's fine."

Then, he turned to me, frowning:

"She's my friend. You should show a little more grace toward my friends."

I looked at him.

In my past life, hearing those words would have devastated me.

Now, I simply nodded.

"Okay."

Standing behind Ethan's back, Vivian stared at me, the corners of her mouth curling into a sly, triumphant smirk.

A moment later, she murmured softly:

"Ethan, I'm kind of hungry. I haven't had your cooking in so long."

Without a second thought, Ethan took her suitcase. "What do you want to eat?"

She beamed. "Anything you make is fine."

"Let's go home then. I'll cook for you."

They walked out together right in front of me.

He had promised to stay and look after his injured mate, but the moment Vivian showed up, he forgot every word.

Left alone in the quiet hospital room, I couldn't help but let out a bitter chuckle.

I was discharged five days later.

Throughout those five days, Ethan never visited once, nor did he send a single text.

When I unlocked the apartment door, the first thing I saw was Vivian lounging in the living room.

She was wearing my pajamas, wrapped in my favorite throw blanket.

My laptop was resting on her lap, and beside her was a cup of coffee Ethan had freshly brewed for her.

Seeing me walk in, she froze for a split second.

"Elia, you're back?"

My gaze locked onto my laptop.

Stored inside were years of my research files, along with several werewolf genetics papers left behind by my father.

A wave of anger flared within me as I stepped forward and snatched the laptop away.

"Who said you could touch my things?"

Vivian's eyes turned red immediately.

"I'm sorry..."

She turned tearfully toward Ethan.

"I just felt cold, so I borrowed your blanket... and Ethan was the one who told me I could use the laptop."

I looked at Ethan. His brow furrowed in disapproval.

"Elia, don't be so petty. You're going to be the Luna of our pack one day. You need to learn to be generous."

Always this.

The second Vivian's eyes turned red, I was automatically the villain.

Suddenly, I had nothing left to say.

I simply opened the laptop and quickly ran through my files.

My research papers were still there, untouched.

I snapped the laptop shut and said quietly:

"It's fine."

Ethan seemed surprised by how calm I was.

"You're not mad?"

I shook my head. "No."

Because there was no point.

I had already decided to leave.

In four days, I would be at the Werewolf Genetics Research Institute in Boston.

All I wanted was to leave smoothly without drama, though for some reason, an unsettling dread crept into my chest.

"Dr. Paul said if you keep pulling all-nighters, he's revoking your lab privileges for three days."I looked up and smiled faintly. "Just need the final control group data. I'll rest once it's done."He didn't lecture me, simply pulling up a stool to review the monitors by my side.My phone buzzed.Another text from Ethan using yet another burner number. No matter how many numbers I blocked, he never gave up.Over the past t

Ethan didn't leave right away.He stood at the end of the street outside the research facility, looking like a lost dog waiting for me to change my mind.I never looked back.Only after his silhouette completely vanished from the street did I turn and walk back inside. The moment the heavy glass doors clicked shut, a long breath escaped my chest.A few minutes later, my phone buzzed on the desk. The caller ID flashed a name:Vivian.I ignored it.The phone rang again and again, relentless. Finally, I pressed accept."Elia!"The moment the call connected, Vivian's voice screeched through the speaker. She sounded completely hysterical, her panic barely contained."Did Ethan go find you?!"I didn't answer. Her breathing turned ragged and erratic."What kind of spell did you put on him?! Why is he only looking at you now?!"I leaned back against the breakroom sofa, listening calmly to her unravel. Her voice spiked into a manic scream:"Don't think for a second that him going after you mean

Elia's POVTo my surprise, Dr. Paul had actually arranged for someone to pick me up at the airport. He was tall, with rich dark brown hair and striking blue eyes, standing out effortlessly in the bustling crowd. The moment he spotted me, he walked over."Miss Carlson, I'm Bryan. Do you remember me?"I paused, slightly taken aback. The name sounded vaguely familiar.Yet no matter how much I searched my memories, I couldn't match the face in front of me to anyone from my past.Feeling a bit embarrassed, I shook my head."I'm sorry, I..."Bryan chuckled warmly."Don't worry about it.""We went to the same college, same department. You were always ranked first in every exam, and I was the eternal runner-up."He gave an easy shrug."That's why you left such a deep impression on me."He looked at me, genuine warmth lighting up his eyes."I've always admired and respected you, very much."With that, he extended his hand toward me."It's an honor to work and learn alongside you again."I took

I practically slammed the pedal through the floorboard as I sped back to the apartment. The engine roared in my ears, but my mind was a terrifying blank. The bond was broken. Dead. Before the car even came to a complete halt, I kicked the door open and sprinted out.The seconds inside the elevator felt like an eternity. The moment the doors slid open, I charged straight into the apartment. The living room was completely empty.Sitting on the table was the dirty coffee mug I had brewed for Vivian this morning. Her sickly-sweet perfume still hung in the air, but there wasn't a trace of Elia's scent anywhere. My stomach dropped."Elia?!"Silence.I strode toward the master bedroom and yanked the door open.I froze on the threshold.Sprawled across the bed were Vivian's baby-pink sheets. Her skincare bottles and chargers cluttered the nightstand, and the closet doors hung open, packed full of her clothes. My fists clenched so tightly my knuckles popped, a brutal wave of clarity hitting me.

Ethan's POVDusk had already fallen by the time I escorted Vivian out of the Council hall. The moment we got into the car, she crawled over the center console and sat directly in my lap, wrapping herself tightly around me.Her body was trembling."Ethan..." She buried her face into the crook of my neck, her voice small and fragile. "I was so scared today."My hands hovered in the air, freezing before I could touch her.It had been so long since I held anyone like this.Suddenly, thoughts of Elia flooded my mind.Ever since I brought Vivian back from the airport, I hadn't truly held Elia once. I could barely even remember the warmth of her kiss. When she was lying in that hospital bed injured, I was supposed to be there; yet the moment Vivian appeared, my attention, my time, and even my heartbeats seemed to stray entirely. The girl in my arms suddenly looked up."Ethan?"I snapped out of my daze.In the next second, Vivian's lips pressed against the corner of my mouth. Her kiss was soft

The moment the plane soared beyond the borders of the Blood Moon Pack, I felt that invisible tether inside me snap with brutal finality.Ethan's desperate voice echoed in my mind.Yet I didn't answer. Not once. I stayed silent until his voice vanished completely. At first, my inner wolf suffered terribly. She clawed and howled inside my chest, her agony tearing at my ribs.I closed my eyes, gripping the armrests tightly as cold sweat dripped down my forehead."Enough," I whispered to her firmly in my mind. "We don't need to stay shackled to a man like that."Her whines gradually grew faint. The pain lingered, but she stopped thrashing. It was as if she finally realized that letting go brought far more peace than holding on to poison.Outside the window, a thick sea of clouds rolled beneath us as the plane cruised steadily toward North America.Boston, here I come.Meanwhile, back in the Council hall, the air was suffocatingly tense.Ethan shot up from his seat, his face ghostly pale.T
