Chapter 1

"I'm serious. Go now."

Alpha Ethan stared down at the taxi ride I had booked for him on my phone, his brows furrowing tighter and tighter.

"Elia, your parents just died, and you're severely injured yourself. You really want me to walk away right now?"

I leaned back against the hospital bed. Even with bandages tightly wrapped around my waist, blood still seeped through where the rogue wolf had slashed my abdomen.

It hurt like hell, but I didn't want his company anymore:

"The pack doctors are here. They'll fix me up. I really, truly don't need you."

He let out an exasperated sigh, looking utterly helpless:

"Are you testing me again?"

"I've told you so many times. Vivian and I grew up together, yes, but there's nothing romantic between us."

He reached out and took my hand. "You and I are fated mates."

A bitter laugh almost escaped my throat.

In my past life, I believed those exact words.

And what happened? Vivian's death still became the greatest regret of his entire life.

Ethan's favoritism toward her had always been there. He just refused to acknowledge it, and I had deceived myself into pretending it didn't matter.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

Two voice messages arrived from Vivian.

"Ethan, I just went through the security checkpoint."

"Don't come, and don't contact me anymore. Goodbye."

Her words sounded decisive, yet her voice trembled with tears, practically begging him to stop her.

Sure enough, Ethan's fingers tightened instantly, his entire body stiffening in a panic.

I read the taxi's license plate number out loud to him.

"The car is outside. You should hurry."

He stared at me, searching my face for any hint of jealousy, hurt, or a plea for him to stay.

But there was nothing. Because I genuinely didn't need him anymore.

After a long pause, he put on his jacket and said hesitantly:

"I'm only going to say goodbye. I'll be right back to take care of you."

I nodded.

"Okay."

Not long after he left, the pack doctor walked in.

She handed me two clear evidence bags.

One held my father's phone, and the other held my mother's broken necklace.

"I am so sorry for your loss."

"Is there anyone else with you? Someone who can help arrange your parents' funeral?"

I traced the bloodstains on the necklace with my fingertips.

"There's no one else. Just me. I can handle it myself."

In my past life, Ethan had taken care of all of this for me.

He contacted the pack elders, arranged the memorial service, and handled my parents' pack duties.

This time, I signed every document myself.

As my pen lifted from the final form, my father's phone screen lit up.

I picked it up and saw an unsent text draft my father had written to me:

"Elia, Dr. Paul said there's still an open spot for you on his Werewolf Genetics Research team in Boston."

"If you love research, go for it. Never change your path for anyone else."

I stared at those words for a very long time.

In my past life, I had never seen this message.

Back then, after my parents died, I was completely shattered. My inner wolf wept and howled every single day.

Ethan stayed by my side, and his Alpha scent was the only thing that could comfort me.

He took care of everything, making me grow dependent on him.

Later, because of our fated mate bond, we completed our marking ceremony shortly after.

And I took it for granted that staying in the Blood Moon Pack was my only destiny.

Only now did I finally understand.

My father never wanted me to lose myself. He wanted me to pursue my own dreams.

Taking a deep breath, I dialed Dr. Paul's number.

"Dr. Paul, is that research position still open?"

The line went silent for a second.

"It is. But your physical condition right now..."

"I'll recover quickly."

I looked down at the bandages around my waist and my sprained ankle.

"Can I leave in seven days?"

"Of course."

Seven days.

In seven days, I would leave the Blood Moon Pack and head to Boston.

I would fulfill the future my father never got to see.

As for Ethan...

Now that he finally had the chance to chase after the woman he truly wanted,

I would let him go.

In the end, Vivian was sentenced to prison.Because Ethan had harbored her and obstructed justice, the Council opened a formal review to decide whether he was still fit to remain the pack's Alpha heir.None of that mattered to me anymore.Autumn in Boston carried a sharper chill than in the Blood Moon Pack.Standing by the lab bench, I entered the latest sequencing results of the werewolf genetic samples into the database.Bryan walked over, setting a cup of hot coffee next to my hand."Up until 2:00 AM again?" he asked softly, a helpless smile tugging at his lips. "Dr. Paul said if you keep pulling all-nighters, he's revoking your lab privileges for three days."I looked up and smiled faintly. "Just need the final control group data. I'll rest once it's done."He didn't lecture me, simply pulling up a stool to review the monitors by my side.My phone buzzed.Another text from Ethan using yet another burner number. No matter how many numbers I blocked, he never gave up.Over the past t

Ethan didn't leave right away.He stood at the end of the street outside the research facility, looking like a lost dog waiting for me to change my mind.I never looked back.Only after his silhouette completely vanished from the street did I turn and walk back inside. The moment the heavy glass doors clicked shut, a long breath escaped my chest.A few minutes later, my phone buzzed on the desk. The caller ID flashed a name:Vivian.I ignored it.The phone rang again and again, relentless. Finally, I pressed accept."Elia!"The moment the call connected, Vivian's voice screeched through the speaker. She sounded completely hysterical, her panic barely contained."Did Ethan go find you?!"I didn't answer. Her breathing turned ragged and erratic."What kind of spell did you put on him?! Why is he only looking at you now?!"I leaned back against the breakroom sofa, listening calmly to her unravel. Her voice spiked into a manic scream:"Don't think for a second that him going after you mean

Elia's POVTo my surprise, Dr. Paul had actually arranged for someone to pick me up at the airport. He was tall, with rich dark brown hair and striking blue eyes, standing out effortlessly in the bustling crowd. The moment he spotted me, he walked over."Miss Carlson, I'm Bryan. Do you remember me?"I paused, slightly taken aback. The name sounded vaguely familiar.Yet no matter how much I searched my memories, I couldn't match the face in front of me to anyone from my past.Feeling a bit embarrassed, I shook my head."I'm sorry, I..."Bryan chuckled warmly."Don't worry about it.""We went to the same college, same department. You were always ranked first in every exam, and I was the eternal runner-up."He gave an easy shrug."That's why you left such a deep impression on me."He looked at me, genuine warmth lighting up his eyes."I've always admired and respected you, very much."With that, he extended his hand toward me."It's an honor to work and learn alongside you again."I took

I practically slammed the pedal through the floorboard as I sped back to the apartment. The engine roared in my ears, but my mind was a terrifying blank. The bond was broken. Dead. Before the car even came to a complete halt, I kicked the door open and sprinted out.The seconds inside the elevator felt like an eternity. The moment the doors slid open, I charged straight into the apartment. The living room was completely empty.Sitting on the table was the dirty coffee mug I had brewed for Vivian this morning. Her sickly-sweet perfume still hung in the air, but there wasn't a trace of Elia's scent anywhere. My stomach dropped."Elia?!"Silence.I strode toward the master bedroom and yanked the door open.I froze on the threshold.Sprawled across the bed were Vivian's baby-pink sheets. Her skincare bottles and chargers cluttered the nightstand, and the closet doors hung open, packed full of her clothes. My fists clenched so tightly my knuckles popped, a brutal wave of clarity hitting me.

Ethan's POVDusk had already fallen by the time I escorted Vivian out of the Council hall. The moment we got into the car, she crawled over the center console and sat directly in my lap, wrapping herself tightly around me.Her body was trembling."Ethan..." She buried her face into the crook of my neck, her voice small and fragile. "I was so scared today."My hands hovered in the air, freezing before I could touch her.It had been so long since I held anyone like this.Suddenly, thoughts of Elia flooded my mind.Ever since I brought Vivian back from the airport, I hadn't truly held Elia once. I could barely even remember the warmth of her kiss. When she was lying in that hospital bed injured, I was supposed to be there; yet the moment Vivian appeared, my attention, my time, and even my heartbeats seemed to stray entirely. The girl in my arms suddenly looked up."Ethan?"I snapped out of my daze.In the next second, Vivian's lips pressed against the corner of my mouth. Her kiss was soft

The moment the plane soared beyond the borders of the Blood Moon Pack, I felt that invisible tether inside me snap with brutal finality.Ethan's desperate voice echoed in my mind.Yet I didn't answer. Not once. I stayed silent until his voice vanished completely. At first, my inner wolf suffered terribly. She clawed and howled inside my chest, her agony tearing at my ribs.I closed my eyes, gripping the armrests tightly as cold sweat dripped down my forehead."Enough," I whispered to her firmly in my mind. "We don't need to stay shackled to a man like that."Her whines gradually grew faint. The pain lingered, but she stopped thrashing. It was as if she finally realized that letting go brought far more peace than holding on to poison.Outside the window, a thick sea of clouds rolled beneath us as the plane cruised steadily toward North America.Boston, here I come.Meanwhile, back in the Council hall, the air was suffocatingly tense.Ethan shot up from his seat, his face ghostly pale.T
