Chapter 3

작가: Tally Keith
Janice and I made our way toward the meeting location when the afternoon rolled around.

We were meeting Louis Roseford, a long-time business partner of the company.

The meeting began after both parties arrived.

I was completely focused on the talks and took countless notes.

When the other party finished speaking in Dormich, I took a deep breath, preparing myself to translate his words.

However, the sounds of a fluent translation resounded behind me.

"The patient showed significant improvement after taking the new endocrine drugs during treatment. The key points include overall survival period and the time needed until cell-isolated chemotherapy is required."

I whipped my head around.

Janice, who was supposed to be "learning" during the meeting, was swiftly translating the man's words.

The rest of the meeting played out the same way. Every time I tried to speak up, she would beat me to the punch and translate the other party's words.

I couldn't get a single word in during the entire meeting.

Applause filled the room after Janice translated the last sentence.

Only then did she snap back to her senses. She pretended to be shocked and covered her mouth with her hand, saying, "I'm sorry. I actually just came here to learn. I was so engrossed in the talks that I just translated whatever I heard. I hope you don't mind, Giselle."

Nicholas was also clapping excitedly.

"You did wonderfully! Why would she mind? Translation is all about speaking aloud according to your skills, after all."

Louis also showered Janice with praise.

"Giselle has always been the translator for our company, but a newcomer like you was able to translate so fluently. You must have spent a long time preparing for this meeting."

Janice pursed her lips and smiled. "I didn't have to prepare anything. Isn't translation just directly saying the things that you hear? It's as easy as breathing once you're used to it. It's like a natural reaction akin to how our body naturally needs water."

"Giselle's already a seasoned professional, but she still asks us for the information a week in advance before the meeting. Are you telling me that you came in here without any preparation?" Louis asked in shock.

"I may be new, but I know how busy everyone is. I won't ask too many questions or for information because I don't want to be a bother to anyone," Janice answered, blinking at him innocently. "Also, I don't think it's very professional to drag something out for a few days if it can be done on the spot."

I frowned upon hearing her words.

Janice clearly had no idea what she was talking about.

A translator was constantly dealing with technical terms from different industries. Studying the information and making preparations beforehand were part of a translator's responsibility.

I could immediately tell that something was amiss with Louis' gaze when he looked at me. I wasn't even given a chance to explain myself before he said, "I want Janice to be our company's translator from now on. We can't afford to hire a certain person who likes to put on airs!"

I couldn't defend myself.

Meanwhile, Nicholas swiftly agreed to Louis' request.

Nicholas showered Janice with praise after we returned to the company. He also announced that she would be promoted from her position as a receptionist to an official translator.

Janice was given her own private office that same day.

Nicholas proudly declared that it was a reward for her excellent performance during the business meeting.

I quietly scoffed.

I had worked as a translator in similar business meetings over 100 times, and I hadn't made a single mistake. Although I had been working for a decade, my workstation was still a tiny cubicle in a shared space with everyone else. I had never had a private office.

I didn't say anything else and quietly focused on my own work.

The same thing happened with my next few projects.

Janice would beat me to translating the client's words, building up her own reputation in the process.

I knew that she could only spit out those fluent translations because of me. It was why I didn't slack off at all and continued with my preparations diligently.

At last, the day of the presentation for the 100-million-dollar project had arrived.

On the surface, it looked like I was still researching information and looking up technical terms.

My colleague rolled her eyes at me and said, "You shouldn't accept jobs that you're not qualified for. Janice can translate everything on the spot. They're not going to let you be the translator for the project. You're just wasting everyone's time by pretending to work hard."

Janice covered her mouth with her hand and laughed.

"It's pointless for you to look through the information every day, Giselle," she said disdainfully, tapping her own head with her finger. "You worked yourself to the bone studying translation for a decade, but your skills are far inferior to mine even though I've only taught myself for a month."

My colleagues began to flatter Janice again.

I frowned, pretending to feel troubled. "You're right. It's pointless for me to keep doing this. Your skills are more than enough. I suppose I can just skip the meeting!"

Nicholas looked like he had more to say, but I ignored him and handed the recording device to the investigation team. The truth finally came to light when they played the recording.Henry slammed his hands on the table when he heard Nicholas confidently declare that he would take full responsibility if anything went awry when he switched Janice and me at the last minute. "I can't believe that someone in the company's management level would say such a thing!" he spat.Nicholas' face was deathly pale as he stood to the side and didn't say a single word. The recording device didn't just contain a recording of what happened during the meeting. It also contained evidence of how Nicholas abused his authority to condone everything that Janice did.Nicholas could no longer hide how he had broken company rules time and time again for Janice's sake.Henry's expression turned serious after listening to the tail-end of the recording."We're aware of what's been happening now, Giselle. Henry became angry upon hearing Janice's words."It's the most basic responsibility of a translator to research the technical terms beforehand. Why would you force someone to go on stage without giving them a chance to look at the materials? You're basically forcing them into a difficult situation," he said.Janice wiped her tears and hung her head."It's fine. I'm used to it," she said. "I caused trouble for the company because of this incident. I have nothing to say if the company wants to fire or punish me."My colleagues began to chime in with their own stories, dragging my name through the mud."Mr. Bridges, Giselle has been bullying the newcomers to her heart's content because she's the company's ace translator. It wasn't easy for the company to train Janice. Giselle refuses to let Janice participate in any projects because she's jealous of Janice's talent. She's worried that she'll threaten her position one day!""Not only that, but Giselle refuses to share the most basic

It was blatantly obvious that Nicholas and my colleagues were looking for a scapegoat. They weren't just trying to convince me for Janice's sake. They were worried about the dire consequences they would face since they had unanimously decided to elect Janice as the official translator. If the investigation team dug into the details, all of them would be punished. That was why they were so impatient and eager to force me to shoulder all the blame. What a brilliant idea! The smile that stretched across my lips didn't reach my eyes."You're right. The fine probably won't be too expensive, but it would be a burden for Janice," I said.Everyone nodded vigorously."That's right! That's what I was saying!"Nicholas smiled and said, "I told you that it was just a trivial matter. I'm glad that you can see the bigger picture.""Since all of you think that it's just a trivial matter," I continued languidly. "Why don't all of you take responsibility for what happened? All of you can pay t

"I-I…" Janice stuttered, unable to string a full sentence together. In the end, George ordered the security guards to drag her out of the room as well.George immediately ordered his men to contact a translator after his anger subsided. He couldn't help but frown when he was told that it would take at least half an hour for the nearest translator to rush to the venue. Finally, his gaze landed on me.He knew about my capabilities since we had worked together several times before. He asked if I was willing to salvage the situation and become the official translator for the meeting.Of course, I had no reason to reject him. I took a deep breath and sat in the translator's chair.I was able to easily translate everything since I had diligently prepared for this meeting in my past life.Janice could hear the words in my heart when the security guards were dragging her out of the room. She looked overjoyed and frantically shouted, "I know how to translate everything now! Please give m

Janice shocked everyone again when she opened her mouth.Instead of the previous funeral speech, she was reciting a completely new one this time.Janice subconsciously picked up the speed of her recitation. Her voice resounded from the speakers and echoed all around the room. The droning quality of her voice frustrated everyone to no end."Shut up! Stop speaking!" someone shouted."This is so annoying! Why the hell are you reciting a funeral speech? Do you want to send all of us to the other side?""How upsetting!"George shot to his feet and smashed his cup on the floor.Silence instantly descended upon the meeting room, but Janice didn't stop reciting the funeral speech. It was impossible to discern the emotion on George's face."Is your company trying to stir up trouble, Nicholas?" he demanded.Nicholas nearly jumped out of his skin. The strength fled from his legs as he rushed to explain the situation. "M-Mr. Tolton. Please listen to me—"However, George had reached the

Fear flickered across Janice's face, but she couldn't stop herself from reciting the funeral speech. The microphone amplified her voice, making it echo all around the room.Everyone was flabbergasted by the funeral speech."W-What's going on?" The organizer of the meeting, George Tolton, demanded, his expression steely. "Is this some kind of twisted joke? We want to hear her translations. We're in a meeting, not a funeral! We don't need to hear a funeral speech!"Nicholas nearly jumped out of his skin. He was sweating bullets as he rushed onto the stage and began apologizing profusely."I'm sorry! She's our company's new translator. She's probably just feeling a little nervous. Let me talk to her for a moment."Several top-level executives who were present in the room wore stormy expressions.Nicholas hurried over to Janice's side and hissed through gritted teeth, "What the hell are you doing? Why are you reciting a funeral speech when you're supposed to be translating?"Janic
