Chapter 4

작가: Tally Keith
"No!" Janice suddenly shrieked.

She forced herself to smile when she noticed everyone's confused look. She stammered, "W-What I'm trying to say is… Giselle can probably gain some experience at such a big event. She might even be able to put what she learned to use one day!"

Nicholas frowned, looking displeased.

"Why are you being difficult again?" he snapped at me. "Everyone's just telling the truth when they say that you're inferior to Janice. Do you really believe that you can threaten anyone by saying that you're not going to go? You don't have to go if you don't want to!"

I didn't say a single word.

Meanwhile, Janice began to panic.

"I think Giselle should be there, Nick. After all, I've never been part of such a large-scale meeting. We can learn from each other if she's there!"

My colleagues began to praise Janice.

"She always pretends that she needs several days to prepare for her projects, yet you're still giving her a chance, Janice. Instead of learning from each other, she's the one who's going to learn from you if she's there!"

Janice clung to Nicholas and kept begging him to bring me along.

In the end, Nicholas reluctantly nodded and said to me, "Fine. I'll give you a chance for Janice's sake. I'm giving you three minutes. Pack your things and head downstairs as soon as possible. You can forget about going if you're even a minute late!"

Janice stared at me, looking as if she was terrified that I would decline.

"Fine. I guess I can go," I said languidly.

Only then did Janice breathe a sigh of relief.

We arrived at the meeting venue.

When it was time for the designated translator to take their place on stage, Janice threw her arm out and stopped me in my tracks.

"Wait! I've been giving it some thought, and I still think that I should be the translator this time," she said sincerely. "I don't mind giving in to you for smaller jobs, but this project is very important. This isn't the time for you to show off. Your foundation isn't as good as mine, so I'll take charge this time!"

I was about to speak when Nicholas immediately nodded in agreement.

"You make a very good point. This meeting is very important to the company. We can't afford any mistakes.

"Why aren't you thanking Janice, Giselle? She's taking your place for your sake. You'll be treated as the company's villain if you make even a single mistake in your translation and jeopardise the company's chances of becoming publicly listed. I'll be curious to see how you'll explain yourself to the board of directors!"

I scoffed. Although I had a decade's worth of learning and hands-on experience under my belt, the way Janice described me made it sound as though my skills were completely worthless.

I was the one who took on four to five translation projects per day when the company was first established, and I had to stand for two to three hours for each one. It was due to my efforts that the company could build a good reputation in the industry.

Now, I was being painted as the so-called villain of the company. On top of that, they expected me to be grateful to Janice even though she was the one who stole my work.

My colleagues began to mock me when I didn't budge.

"You're kidding me. Don't tell me that you actually want to fight Janice over who gets to be the translator for this meeting, Giselle?"

"Janice only brought you along because she wanted to give you a chance to learn. You can't be so greedy!"

"Even if we disregard the fact that Janice is more professional than you, she's also more pleasing to look at. Have you taken a look at yourself in the mirror? Your eye bags are horrible!"

I raised my hand and brushed my fingers against the bags under my eyes that had formed due to multiple sleepless nights. I had willingly sacrificed sleep to prepare for the project.

In my past life, I definitely would have fought for a chance to get on the stage.

However, I simply scanned my surroundings and smiled at that moment.

"I don't mind. I just hope that you'll take responsibility for your own choices. Don't regret the decisions that you've made."

My colleagues mocked me for overthinking things.

Meanwhile, Nicholas scoffed and said, "I'm the one who's allowing Janice to go on stage. I'll take full responsibility if anything goes awry."

I didn't argue with them and allowed Janice to take my place.

Janice blinked innocently at me and said, "You were always the official translator, Giselle, and you would always make a fuss if I got too close to you. To be honest with you, I'm not used to you being so quiet.

"But you have to admit that everyone's born with different talents. You spent 12 years getting to where you are now, but I reached your level after only a month. You should pay close attention to me when I'm translating later. Maybe you can learn something!"

I ignored her.

Janice sat in the translator's chair when the meeting began.

Nicholas and my colleagues gave her encouraging gestures from below the stage.

In the next second, Janice's expression turned serious.

Nicholas sighed in awe when he noticed her focused expression. He remarked, "Janice was truly born to be a translator. She gives her all in everything she does."

My colleagues voiced their agreement.

A second later, Janice opened her mouth and began reciting a funeral speech.

Everyone's eyes widened in shock.

Nicholas looked like he had more to say, but I ignored him and handed the recording device to the investigation team. The truth finally came to light when they played the recording.Henry slammed his hands on the table when he heard Nicholas confidently declare that he would take full responsibility if anything went awry when he switched Janice and me at the last minute. "I can't believe that someone in the company's management level would say such a thing!" he spat.Nicholas' face was deathly pale as he stood to the side and didn't say a single word. The recording device didn't just contain a recording of what happened during the meeting. It also contained evidence of how Nicholas abused his authority to condone everything that Janice did.Nicholas could no longer hide how he had broken company rules time and time again for Janice's sake.Henry's expression turned serious after listening to the tail-end of the recording."We're aware of what's been happening now, Giselle. Henry became angry upon hearing Janice's words."It's the most basic responsibility of a translator to research the technical terms beforehand. Why would you force someone to go on stage without giving them a chance to look at the materials? You're basically forcing them into a difficult situation," he said.Janice wiped her tears and hung her head."It's fine. I'm used to it," she said. "I caused trouble for the company because of this incident. I have nothing to say if the company wants to fire or punish me."My colleagues began to chime in with their own stories, dragging my name through the mud."Mr. Bridges, Giselle has been bullying the newcomers to her heart's content because she's the company's ace translator. It wasn't easy for the company to train Janice. Giselle refuses to let Janice participate in any projects because she's jealous of Janice's talent. She's worried that she'll threaten her position one day!""Not only that, but Giselle refuses to share the most basic

It was blatantly obvious that Nicholas and my colleagues were looking for a scapegoat. They weren't just trying to convince me for Janice's sake. They were worried about the dire consequences they would face since they had unanimously decided to elect Janice as the official translator. If the investigation team dug into the details, all of them would be punished. That was why they were so impatient and eager to force me to shoulder all the blame. What a brilliant idea! The smile that stretched across my lips didn't reach my eyes."You're right. The fine probably won't be too expensive, but it would be a burden for Janice," I said.Everyone nodded vigorously."That's right! That's what I was saying!"Nicholas smiled and said, "I told you that it was just a trivial matter. I'm glad that you can see the bigger picture.""Since all of you think that it's just a trivial matter," I continued languidly. "Why don't all of you take responsibility for what happened? All of you can pay t

"I-I…" Janice stuttered, unable to string a full sentence together. In the end, George ordered the security guards to drag her out of the room as well.George immediately ordered his men to contact a translator after his anger subsided. He couldn't help but frown when he was told that it would take at least half an hour for the nearest translator to rush to the venue. Finally, his gaze landed on me.He knew about my capabilities since we had worked together several times before. He asked if I was willing to salvage the situation and become the official translator for the meeting.Of course, I had no reason to reject him. I took a deep breath and sat in the translator's chair.I was able to easily translate everything since I had diligently prepared for this meeting in my past life.Janice could hear the words in my heart when the security guards were dragging her out of the room. She looked overjoyed and frantically shouted, "I know how to translate everything now! Please give m

Janice shocked everyone again when she opened her mouth.Instead of the previous funeral speech, she was reciting a completely new one this time.Janice subconsciously picked up the speed of her recitation. Her voice resounded from the speakers and echoed all around the room. The droning quality of her voice frustrated everyone to no end."Shut up! Stop speaking!" someone shouted."This is so annoying! Why the hell are you reciting a funeral speech? Do you want to send all of us to the other side?""How upsetting!"George shot to his feet and smashed his cup on the floor.Silence instantly descended upon the meeting room, but Janice didn't stop reciting the funeral speech. It was impossible to discern the emotion on George's face."Is your company trying to stir up trouble, Nicholas?" he demanded.Nicholas nearly jumped out of his skin. The strength fled from his legs as he rushed to explain the situation. "M-Mr. Tolton. Please listen to me—"However, George had reached the

Fear flickered across Janice's face, but she couldn't stop herself from reciting the funeral speech. The microphone amplified her voice, making it echo all around the room.Everyone was flabbergasted by the funeral speech."W-What's going on?" The organizer of the meeting, George Tolton, demanded, his expression steely. "Is this some kind of twisted joke? We want to hear her translations. We're in a meeting, not a funeral! We don't need to hear a funeral speech!"Nicholas nearly jumped out of his skin. He was sweating bullets as he rushed onto the stage and began apologizing profusely."I'm sorry! She's our company's new translator. She's probably just feeling a little nervous. Let me talk to her for a moment."Several top-level executives who were present in the room wore stormy expressions.Nicholas hurried over to Janice's side and hissed through gritted teeth, "What the hell are you doing? Why are you reciting a funeral speech when you're supposed to be translating?"Janic
