On the fifth year anniversary of my marking ceremony with Alpha Gabriel Blackhound, I got sprayed by a blast of high-concentration silver powder that was ejected from the jewelry box I had opened. Chapter 1

母が死体を凝視したまま動かないのを見て、高木警部が緊張した面持ちで尋ねた。

次の瞬間、母の表情が引き締まった。

「一刻も早く頭蓋骨を見つけて。遺体が腐敗しきる前なら、被害者の顔を最大限まで復顔できるわ」

私は母の足元に駆け寄り、「ニャー」と数回鳴いて、ズボンの裾を咥えて花壇の方へと引っ張った。

母は呆気に取られて私を見ていたが、先に口を開いたのは高木警部だった。

半信半疑の二人を連れて花壇まで来ると、見慣れた花壇を目にした母は一瞬、呆然とした。

高木警部が私が立ち止まった場所を見て、シャベルで土を掘り返し始める。

「本当にあった……」

高木警部は、花壇の中から現れた、すでにウジ虫がわいた頭蓋骨を見て、思わず声を漏らした。

母の目にも、わずかに憐れみの色が浮かんでいた。

「まだ若いのに、こんな惨たらしい殺され方をして……家族が知ったら、どれほど悲しむことか」

悲しい？
