CRYSSARA

The elder holds the paper higher, and the wind blows viciously at its edges.

"By old pack custom, once an Alpha refuses a rejection, the mate's share belongs to him," he says. "Open the gate."

Dorian looms right behind him, that same predatory smile curling across his face, the same smile he wore when he chose Seraphina at the shelter, a smile already drunk on victory, already feasting on what he believes is his.

I grip the cold iron bars until my knuckles scream. I have just one hour left. That is all they gave me, and I will not waste a single breath of it.

Quill steps up beside me, surprisingly calm. He opens his bag slowly and pulls out one book: the ceremony register. it has a brown cover, with thin pages worn soft with age. He holds it so every face on the other side of the gate can see it.

"There's no signature," he says, his voice slicing through the tension, finding its mark. "There's no moon mark. Look for yourselves."

He flips a page. It is blank. He flips another... Still blank.

Dorian's smile does not waver. "That means nothing to me. I refused the rejection. The claim stands."

"The mate ceremony never happened tonight," Quill says, and he does not raise his voice, he doesn't need to; the words themselves land merciless. "No bond was ever made in law. Before the ceremony, a she-wolf can reject freely. A refusal carries no power here. You have nothing to claim."

The two elders lean in, their certainty crumbling. One snatches the book, their fingers dragging down the empty lines as though he might conjure ink from nothing through mere desperation. He shoots a look at the other elder, a look thick with dread, with the sick understanding of a gamble lost. They hoped I would not know. They bet everything on my ignorance, and it has cost them.

Lyanna presses close to my shoulder. "Is that enough?" she hisses, her nails digging into my arm.

I do not look away from Dorian, I do not dare give him the satisfaction. "It has to be."

Caelus has not moved, but his eyes track Dorian's every twitch for a cracking composure.

Dorian's fingers curl into fists, then he releases it, it curls again.

One elder clears his throat, the sound brittle as breaking glass in the charged air. "The register is empty," he says. "The claim fails under the custom."

"There is no bond to enforce the rule," the second elder snaps, each word a nail driven into Dorian's ambitions.

The six warriors shifts back a little. Their boots scraping stone, unease rippling through their ranks. No one speaks. The quiet stretches like a blade held to the throat, waiting for someone to bleed.

Dorian's smile shatters completely. His jaw clenches hard enough that I could hear his muscles move. Fury replaces charm, not remorse, never remorse, only the raw violence of a man watching his prize dissolve before his eyes. Something he believed was already his has slipped through his fingers, and the lost claws at him, impossible to hide.

He slams his fist against the gate, and the iron vibrates under the blow. He moves closer.

"You planned this," he snarls, voice dripping with venom, each word barely leashed. "You knew the papers were never signed. You made a fool of me in front of my own pack."

I hold his gaze, refusing to blink, refusing to give him even a flicker of satisfaction. "I rejected you this morning. The ceremony was never going to happen. You just refused to listen."

"You are still under Ashfang protection," he roars, with rage seeping through every word he speaks, spit flying against the bars.

"I walked out." I let the words fall like stones into still water, watching them sink and destroy.

His hands wrench against the iron bars, veins straining against skin until they threaten to tear through. The metal shrieks in protest beneath his grip.

Caelus advances one silent step, a warning carved into every line of his body.

Dorian's eyes dart to him, then snap back to me, dangerously hunting for any crack to exploit, any weakness to tear open.

Quill holds the register open, steady as judgment itself. "The law is clear," he says, meeting Dorian's glare without blinking. "There's no signature. No moon mark, no bond. The claim ends here, and there's nothing you can do."

The first elder takes the book back. "We'll withdraw the paper," he says, his voice flat, drained of all authority it once held. "For now."

They retreat, the warriors falling into step behind them like shadows fleeing light.

Dorian does not retreat. He stares at me through the iron, his eyes burning with something far uglier than disappointment, something unforgiving, something that promises this is not over. His breath comes ragged, each exhale a threat unspoken.

"Fine. Keep your lodge," he snarls, his voice dropping, cold and venomous. "For thirty days. The Alpha Council does not let a wolfless omega hold land alone. After that, it is ours. And so are you."

CRYSSARA"Is that true?" Quill raises his chin up slowly."The Alpha Council rule is real. She has just thirty days. After that they can force a claim if she stands alone."Quill packs the register into his bag and yanks the strap tight. "I have to file the empty ceremony record before dark." His jaw sets. "I will return tomorrow with whatever papers still matter.""Thank you for the book." I said as we both left the gate."Keep it locked." He does not look back. "They will try again."He leaves. The cars are already gone. The road stays quiet.Lyanna closes the main door and turns the heavy bolt. "We are having tea first. Then we'll we eat." Her eyes sweep over me with worry. "You look ready to fall over."She finds a kettle in the kitchen and sets water on the cooker. I open the pantry, and real food sits on the shelves. Dry beans. Salt. A small bag of flour. A jar of honey that still smells sweet. For the first time I cook for people because I want to, not because someone ordered m

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   5: I refuse your rejection

Cryssara's POV "On what grounds?" I questioned. Quill's jaw tightens as he looks straight at me. "Dorian refused your rejection. By old pack custom, the Alpha can claim a mate's share, and that applies to you." His voice drops to something darker. "And the elders aren't helping him out of loyalty. They want the money. They always want the money." I don't need him to say it twice. The trap is already closing, precise like iron settling around my wrists, tightening with every second I waste standing still. "If I reach the Hold first and hold it, the claim has no power."That is what I think, even though I don't know if that will work. But Quill nods indicating that he thinks the same too. Lyanna already has her bag slung over her shoulder, her face set with the kind of determination that used to terrify me when we were children, back when she meant every threat she made. Caelus waits at the door, his eyes scanning the dark beyond the threshold as though counting threats that hav

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   4: What my real mother left

Cryssara's POV Dorian yelled. "Shut the gate!" Guards sprint forward, slamming their bodies across the road. The lawyer's car lurches to a stop. My heart hammers against my ribs, each beating a drum of panic I cannot silence. Caelus steps into the road without hesitation. He says nothing. He stands there as if he has weathered worse storms than this one. The guards falter, exchanging glances, and back away. Nobody wants to test a rogue Alpha with his reputation. Then he enters the car. The car surges through the gap. I refuse to look back, though every instinct yells at me to check whether Dorian still watches, still waits, still plans his next move. The road stretches open ahead. Trees smear past the window in a blur of silhouette and shadow. In the back seat, my breath ripped out of me in ragged gasps, my hands shaking in my lap like leaves caught in the wind. Lyanna is already pressed against my side. She had chased the car down, and I yanked her through the door seconds

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   3: I must get her back

Alpha Dorian's POV "Cryssara, wait." She does not stop. The lawyer already waits at the door. Her adoptive mother sits pale and silent, her hands twisting in her lap as though wringing out some private grief. Seraphina stands there with her tears glistening. Then the room tilts under me. Before I can follow her, the elders summon me to the small room. Three of them sit behind the old table, with their faces deepened by wrinkles. the weight of decades pressing down on their expressions. The lawyer has already spoken to them. One elder fixes me with flat, merciless eyes, the kind that have watched a hundred foolish Alphas make the same mistake and choke on the consequences. "If you want that money, do not accept her rejection," he says, each word a nail driven into the silence. I stood there, with my hands clenched at my sides, my pulse hammering against my ribs. I never say sorry. I only count what I stand to lose, running the numbers like a man balancing a ledger instead of

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   2: Everyone is in the room

Cryssara's POV My mother freezes in the doorway. Both stared at me as though my words were a smoke, refusing to fade. She finds her voice first. "How dare you? After everything this family has done for you? You don't even have a wolf. We took you out of pity, and this is how you repay us...with betrayal?" I kept my eyes on her, my hands steady at my sides. For the first time in seven years, nobody is telling me what to do, and the silence roared louder than any shout. It fills the room, pressing against the walls, against everything I have swallowed for so long. Dorian shoved past her, his jaw was tight which made a vein pulse at his temple. "I picked you when no one would. Who will want an omega with no wolf? Tell me that." The words intentions were meant to wound, meant to remind me of my place. I did not answer. He waits, clenching his fists, the muscles in his forearms banged with a fury he no longer bothers to hide. Nothing comes from me. His face shifts, the anger giving w
