CRYSSARA

"Is that true?" Quill raises his chin up slowly.

"The Alpha Council rule is real. She has just thirty days. After that they can force a claim if she stands alone."

Quill packs the register into his bag and yanks the strap tight. "I have to file the empty ceremony record before dark." His jaw sets. "I will return tomorrow with whatever papers still matter."

"Thank you for the book." I said as we both left the gate.

"Keep it locked." He does not look back. "They will try again."

He leaves. The cars are already gone. The road stays quiet.

Lyanna closes the main door and turns the heavy bolt. "We are having tea first. Then we'll we eat." Her eyes sweep over me with worry. "You look ready to fall over."

She finds a kettle in the kitchen and sets water on the cooker. I open the pantry, and real food sits on the shelves. Dry beans. Salt. A small bag of flour. A jar of honey that still smells sweet.

For the first time I cook for people because I want to, not because someone ordered me.

Lyanna watches me measure the flour. "You never cooked like this at Ashfang." She says. "You always looked like the kitchen was punishing you."

"It was." I snapped.

She laughs once, but it doesn't reach her eyes. "We'll, tonight it is different."

I knead the dough. The warmth of the oven starts to fill the stone room. Caelus sits at the table without speaking. He keeps his hands around an empty cup.

Lyanna pours the tea. "Drink. Both of you."

Caelus takes the cup but does not drink. His eyes stay fixed on me, like he's waiting for an answer that he has not yet questioned me for. "What do you know about the winter?"

I keep my hands in the dough, refusing to meet his stare. "Only what the sky tells me."

He leans forward, the chair creaking under the sudden shift of his weight. "Snow in the warm season is not normal. You went quiet the moment it started." His voice hardens with accusation. "That is not 'only the sky,' and we both know it."

Lyanna places a plate down, the crack of it against wood sharper than she intends. "Let her be for one night!"

"I can't." Caelus's voice rises, cutting across the room. "I need to know if she is guessing, or if she already knows how bad it gets." His grip on the cup tightens until his fingers turn pale.

I meet his eyes, refusing to flinch, my own voice rising to match the challenge. "I know the cold can turn rivers to stone. I know fur does not save anyone when it comes deep." My voice hardens, sharp as his. "That is all. Push harder and you'll get the same answer twice."

He does not believe me. I can see it in the way his jaw moves, in the way his knuckles whiten further around the cup until I think it might shatter. For a moment neither of us breathes. Then he sets the cup down hard enough to slosh tea over the rim, but he says nothing more.

We eat in near silence, the air thick with things unsaid, every clink of a spoon too loud. The bread is warm. The beans are plain. It is the first meal that does not taste like duty, though it tastes faintly of distrust, and I can see Caelus watching me still, even as he chews.

After the plates were cleared, I took the letter from my pocket.

The paper is soft from being folded so many times. The corner feels thicker than the rest. I pick at the seam with my thumbnail. Thread gives way. A small key drops into my palm. It is a cold metal. My mother's mark is stamped on the head.

Lyanna leans in, breath catching. "What is that?"

"I did not know it was there." My voice shakes.

Caelus stands so fast the chair scrapes against stone, nearly toppling. "Show me the mark." His tone leaves no room for refusal.

I hold the key under the lantern light, my hand not quite steady, and he snatches closer than he needs to, his eyes narrowing like he suspects a trick. The same curve and line that was on the letter.

Lyanna's voice drops to barely a whisper. "She left you a way in."

"Or a way to bury something," Caelus mutters, dark and low, and the words land like an insult.

We take the lantern and go down the cellar steps. The air grows colder with every turn. My breath shows white fog. The warm springs still run behind the walls. Heat pipes tick soft against the stone. The sound is steady, like a slow heart, or a countdown, and with every step Caelus's silence behind me feels like a weight pressing between my shoulder blades.

At the deepest level, an iron door waits. Dust lies thick on the floor. The same mark is carved into the lock plate.

I insert the key. It turns with a dry rusty click. The door opens inward, groaning like something long disturbed.

Lyanna holds the lantern higher, "Careful."

Inside the room is dry and dark. Shelves line the walls. I light a second lantern. Maps cover one side. Safe food depots marked in red ink. Numbers written beside each one. Old weather records stacked on a lower shelf. Dates going back years. Heat pipes run from the springs into every corner of the room. Copper and iron. This is a survival plan.

Lyanna's voice trembles. "What is all these about?"

Caelus stays in the doorway, refusing to step inside, his fists clenched at his sides like he's holding himself back from something. His eyes move over the maps like he is bracing for a blow, and when he finally speaks, his voice is ragged. "If she knew that this was coming, why did no one tell us? Why did you say nothing?"

I open the last book on the table, ignoring the accusation stinging under my skin. Pages of careful writing. Notes about cold that comes too early. Lists of what to store and when. At the end a strange page sits alone. The ink is still dark. The date is three days ago.

My hands go still on the paper, a cold shiver climbing up my spine, and behind me I hear Caelus's breath.

"My mother died years ago." I look up, my voice cracking, daring either of them to make sense of it before I have to. "Who has been writing in this book?"

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   6: The register is empty

CRYSSARAThe elder holds the paper higher, and the wind blows viciously at its edges."By old pack custom, once an Alpha refuses a rejection, the mate's share belongs to him," he says. "Open the gate."Dorian looms right behind him, that same predatory smile curling across his face, the same smile he wore when he chose Seraphina at the shelter, a smile already drunk on victory, already feasting on what he believes is his.I grip the cold iron bars until my knuckles scream. I have just one hour left. That is all they gave me, and I will not waste a single breath of it.Quill steps up beside me, surprisingly calm. He opens his bag slowly and pulls out one book: the ceremony register. it has a brown cover, with thin pages worn soft with age. He holds it so every face on the other side of the gate can see it."There's no signature," he says, his voice slicing through the tension, finding its mark. "There's no moon mark. Look for yourselves."He flips a page. It is blank. He flips another.

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   5: I refuse your rejection

Cryssara's POV "On what grounds?" I questioned. Quill's jaw tightens as he looks straight at me. "Dorian refused your rejection. By old pack custom, the Alpha can claim a mate's share, and that applies to you." His voice drops to something darker. "And the elders aren't helping him out of loyalty. They want the money. They always want the money." I don't need him to say it twice. The trap is already closing, precise like iron settling around my wrists, tightening with every second I waste standing still. "If I reach the Hold first and hold it, the claim has no power."That is what I think, even though I don't know if that will work. But Quill nods indicating that he thinks the same too. Lyanna already has her bag slung over her shoulder, her face set with the kind of determination that used to terrify me when we were children, back when she meant every threat she made. Caelus waits at the door, his eyes scanning the dark beyond the threshold as though counting threats that hav

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   4: What my real mother left

Cryssara's POV Dorian yelled. "Shut the gate!" Guards sprint forward, slamming their bodies across the road. The lawyer's car lurches to a stop. My heart hammers against my ribs, each beating a drum of panic I cannot silence. Caelus steps into the road without hesitation. He says nothing. He stands there as if he has weathered worse storms than this one. The guards falter, exchanging glances, and back away. Nobody wants to test a rogue Alpha with his reputation. Then he enters the car. The car surges through the gap. I refuse to look back, though every instinct yells at me to check whether Dorian still watches, still waits, still plans his next move. The road stretches open ahead. Trees smear past the window in a blur of silhouette and shadow. In the back seat, my breath ripped out of me in ragged gasps, my hands shaking in my lap like leaves caught in the wind. Lyanna is already pressed against my side. She had chased the car down, and I yanked her through the door seconds

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   3: I must get her back

Alpha Dorian's POV "Cryssara, wait." She does not stop. The lawyer already waits at the door. Her adoptive mother sits pale and silent, her hands twisting in her lap as though wringing out some private grief. Seraphina stands there with her tears glistening. Then the room tilts under me. Before I can follow her, the elders summon me to the small room. Three of them sit behind the old table, with their faces deepened by wrinkles. the weight of decades pressing down on their expressions. The lawyer has already spoken to them. One elder fixes me with flat, merciless eyes, the kind that have watched a hundred foolish Alphas make the same mistake and choke on the consequences. "If you want that money, do not accept her rejection," he says, each word a nail driven into the silence. I stood there, with my hands clenched at my sides, my pulse hammering against my ribs. I never say sorry. I only count what I stand to lose, running the numbers like a man balancing a ledger instead of

  • Reborn at the Last Howl   2: Everyone is in the room

Cryssara's POV My mother freezes in the doorway. Both stared at me as though my words were a smoke, refusing to fade. She finds her voice first. "How dare you? After everything this family has done for you? You don't even have a wolf. We took you out of pity, and this is how you repay us...with betrayal?" I kept my eyes on her, my hands steady at my sides. For the first time in seven years, nobody is telling me what to do, and the silence roared louder than any shout. It fills the room, pressing against the walls, against everything I have swallowed for so long. Dorian shoved past her, his jaw was tight which made a vein pulse at his temple. "I picked you when no one would. Who will want an omega with no wolf? Tell me that." The words intentions were meant to wound, meant to remind me of my place. I did not answer. He waits, clenching his fists, the muscles in his forearms banged with a fury he no longer bothers to hide. Nothing comes from me. His face shifts, the anger giving w
