*00:59*

The number began falling again. Faster this time.

Lena couldn't move. Her feet were rooted to the cold floor.

The woman inside the glass chamber stared at her, and it was like looking into a cruel mirror. The same eyes. The same face. The same silver mark pulsing on her palm.

But she looked older. Not much older - maybe five, six years. But it was a tiredness that made her look decades older. A tiredness of someone who had spent years waiting alone in the dark for this one moment.

Ethan stepped between them, his body blocking Lena's view, as if he could shield her from herself.

"Don't listen to her," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Lena, don't listen to anything she says."

The woman inside the glass laughed quietly. It wasn't a cruel laugh. It was sad. Exhausted.

"You always say that, Ethan," she whispered, her voice hoarse. "Every single time, you always say that."

Lena looked at Ethan, her heart pounding so loud it hurt. "You know her? Do you know her?"

"No," Ethan said immediately. Too quickly.

The woman shook her head slowly, her eyes never leaving Ethan.

"That's what you said last time too."

*00:48*

Sarah moved closer to the chamber, despite herself, drawn to it. "Who are you? Please, just tell us who you are."

The woman looked at her, and her expression softened for a second.

"I'm Lena," she said simply.

Sarah's face went bone-white. "Which Lena? Which version?"

The woman smiled, and it was the saddest smile Lena had ever seen.

"The one who survived. The one you all left behind."

Adrian suddenly backed away, stumbling, hitting the control panel.

"No," he breathed. "No, no, no—"

Everyone turned toward him. He was staring at the woman as if he'd seen a ghost rise from the grave.

"You know her," Lena said. It wasn't a question.

Adrian swallowed, his throat bobbing. He couldn't look away from the woman.

"She was supposed to be dead," he whispered. "We confirmed it. Evelyn confirmed it."

The woman inside looked at him, and her sad smile vanished.

"You made sure of that, Adrian."

Adrian's face tightened, guilt and fear warring on his face.

"I followed the protocol. The protocol said—"

"You followed orders," she cut him off coldly.

"And you destroyed the project," he shot back, his voice shaking. "You corrupted the entire archive!"

The woman looked back at Lena, her real attention always on Lena.

"No," she said softly. "She did. The original did. I just remembered it."

Lena stepped closer to the glass, despite every instinct screaming at her to run. "Tell me what happened. Please. Just tell me the truth."

The woman placed her hand against the glass. Her palm mark lined up perfectly with Lena's on the other side, silver against silver.

"I woke up first," she said.

"When?" Lena whispered.

"After the first collapse. After the world you remember ended."

Lena frowned, confused, her forehead pressed almost to the glass now. "But... but I remember waking up in 2023. May 12th. My apartment. The news alert about the fever. I remember the heat—"

"You remember being _told_ you woke up in 2023," the woman said gently. Too gently. "You remember the story they implanted so you wouldn't question it."

The words hit Lena like a punch to the stomach. The air left her lungs.

"What does that mean?" she choked out.

The woman looked toward Ethan, her eyes accusing.

"He knows."

Ethan shook his head violently. "I don't. I swear I don't know what she's talking about."

"You do," the woman said, her voice suddenly sharp.

"I don't remember!"

"That's because they removed it, Ethan. They took it from you so you could do it again."

*00:35*

Lena's palm burned - searing, white-hot.

A memory tore through her mind, so vivid she could smell it.

Her apartment. May 12, 2023. The same bed. The same morning light. The same emergency broadcast about the mysterious fever on her phone.

But this time she saw something she had never noticed before. Something her brain had edited out.

A small black device beneath her bed. No bigger than a coin. A red light blinking slowly. Watching.

And someone standing outside her apartment door in the hallway, perfectly still. Just... watching through the peephole.

Then the memory changed, rewound slightly.

Lena waking up. But instead of immediately grabbing her phone and checking the news like she remembered, she just lay there. Staring at the ceiling.

As if she knew the camera was there. As if she knew she was being watched.

Then she looked directly toward the hidden device under the bed, directly into it, and whispered with a small, knowing, terrifying smile:

"I'm back."

The memory disappeared, snapping back.

Lena opened her eyes, gasping, tears streaming.

"I knew," she whispered. "Oh my god, I knew from the first second."

The woman in the chamber nodded slowly.

"You always knew. You were never fooled, Lena. Not really."

Ethan stared at Lena, his face desperate, confused. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you tell me you knew?"

"Because I didn't remember!" Lena cried, turning to him. "Don't you get it? I remembered what they _wanted_ me to remember! They built me to forget!"

"You remembered enough," the other Lena said quietly.

Lena shook her head, sobbing now. "No. No, I remembered what they let me remember."

*00:24*

The machine began shaking violently, bolts rattling. The black sphere inside was spinning faster and faster, screaming with energy.

Daniel appeared at the entrance of the seventh corridor, running, out of breath, his face urgent, terrified.

"Lena! Get away from the chamber! Get away from her!"

She turned, startled. "Why? What is she?"

"Because that's not another version of you!" he shouted over the noise.

The woman inside smiled, calm in the middle of the chaos.

Daniel raised his weapon, pointing it straight at the glass.

"That's Project Zero wearing her memory like a skin!"

Lena froze, her hand still inches from the glass.

The woman looked at Daniel, almost amused.

"You finally understand, D-01."

Daniel's expression hardened to stone.

"You're not Lena."

"No," the woman said. And then her eyes turned completely silver. No iris. No pupil. Just pure, glowing silver light. "I am everything she forgot."

*00:15*

Adrian suddenly broke free and ran toward the main control panel, his face twisted with determination.

Daniel shouted:

"Stop him! Don't let him touch the controls!"

Ethan moved first. He was faster. He grabbed Adrian just before he reached the panel and slammed him against the wall.

"What are you doing?!" Ethan snarled.

"Ending this!" Adrian struggled, punching at him. "Let me go! You have to let me end this!"

"You don't understand!" Ethan held him tighter.

"No! You don't understand!" Adrian looked past Ethan, straight at Lena, his eyes wild. "If the system reaches zero, it won't reset the world!"

Lena stared, her whole body trembling.

"Then what will it reset?" she whispered.

Adrian's voice dropped to a horrified whisper.

"Time."

The countdown continued, merciless.

*00:10*

Sarah stared at the screen, her voice small. "Can it... can it really do that? Reset time? Is that even possible?"

Daniel nodded, his weapon still aimed at the woman who wasn't Lena.

"That's what Project Zero was built for, Sarah. Not to save memories. To rewind them. To send consciousness back before the collapse ever happened."

Lena looked at the woman in the chamber, at the creature wearing her face with silver eyes.

"Then why did I come back? Why did I ask to be sent back?"

The woman smiled, and it was Lena's own smile.

"Because you asked it to, Creator. You begged it to. You couldn't live with what you had done."

*00:07*

Ethan grabbed Lena's hand, trying to pull her away from the glass, away from herself.

"We're leaving. Lena, we're leaving right now, I don't care what—"

She didn't move. She couldn't.

"Lena!" he shouted.

She looked at him, her eyes full of tears, full of a terrible question.

"Did you kill me?"

Ethan's face went completely pale. All the blood left it.

"I... I don't know," he whispered. His voice was broken.

The woman inside the chamber answered for him, her silver eyes glowing brighter.

"Yes."

*00:05*

Lena looked at Ethan, her heart breaking in real time.

He looked devastated. Destroyed.

The woman continued, her voice soft, almost kind now.

"But he didn't do it because he hated you, Lena."

*00:04*

"He did it because you asked him to."

*00:03*

Lena's eyes widened.

And a forgotten memory - the real one, the last one - returned, flooding back like a dam breaking.

She was holding Ethan's hand. The world was collapsing outside the lab windows, fire in the sky.

She was crying so hard she couldn't breathe.

"Promise me," she sobbed to him.

Ethan was crying too, holding her face.

"What? Anything, tell me what—"

"If Project Zero fails... if I become... if I become the thing that destroys everyone..."

She looked at him, her silver mark burning black.

"Don't let me become the thing that destroys everyone."

*00:02*

Ethan whispered, his voice echoing from the memory and the present at once:

"You asked me to kill you."

*00:01*

Lena remembered everything.

Every life. Every death. Every choice.

She had asked the man who loved her most to be the one to end her.

The machine screamed, a deafening electronic shriek.

The screen flashed final:

RESET INITIATED.

Then the world - light, sound, time, memory, everything -

disappeared.

To be continued......

No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 29 — THE ANCHOR

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 28 — THE SEVEN VERSIONS

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 27 — THE REAL ETHAN

Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
