Eva's POV

My throat suddenly goes dry. “Uhn? No.” I swallow.

“What do you think you are doing?” Troy thunders as he walks toward us.

The two of us turn to him. Evan sighs but he doesn't cower. He gives Troy a resigned look instead but I catch his subtle glance behind Troy. He is afraid of Melinda.

“What does it look like we are doing?” I roll my eyes in annoyance and sigh, replying Troy though he has his heated gaze on Evan.

Troy goes still, staring at me in shock for seconds. He exhales and moves closer. “You shouldn't be talking with him, darling. He will only exploit your naivety.”

Just like he did. It only takes one to know another.

“You don't know that.” I deny that just to rattle him.

He chuckles, the amusement in his eyes clearly mocking me. “You make me want to protect you everytime with how sweet and naive you are, Eva.”

Of course. I fight not to roll my eyes.

It's not love as he wants me to believe. I can see through his bullshit. He is only interested in the challenge with his brother.

“I don't need your protection.” I snort.

“Just my love, I know.” He chuckles. “Let’s go inside, darling.” He reaches for me.

“I'm not done here.”

His eyes darken. “Talking with him?” His tone reeks of condescension.

He glares at Evan. “Flirting with my finance?”

Evan snorts. “Like you flirt with all ladies you see? Cut me some slack.”

Troy's jaw hardens and he grits his teeth. “Because no one wants you and my fiancee doesn't want you either.” He pulls me forward so hard that I can't resist the pull. “She wants me.”

Evan’s gaze hardens but he doesn't say instead. I watch as he walks away, my insides churning with fury. I pull away from him the moment we are alone.

He frowns at my action. I've always been clingy and he was the one who pushes me away. He should taste his medicine too.

“Is there a problem?”

His arrogance makes me mad. I need to get started and topple him off the high horse he is.

“No.”

He exhales. “Let's go inside. Mum won't let me continue eating unless I bring you in.”

“You are still not eating.” Melinda says as I sit back at the table, picking at my food.

I need to do something to have an edge.

“Is there a problem, dear?” Harry, Troy's dad, asked.

An idea sparks in my head. “Can I start working for you?”

Troy gasps. “Why? You said you were happy just to be my wife. You said your dream was to kiss me goodbye and welcome me with kisses anytime I go to and come back from work.”

The reminder of the old me turns my stomach.

I shrug. “I think I can support you better as a wife this way.”

I catch Eve scowling at me but she quickly fakes a smile when she notices me staring at her.

Harry laughs. “You can start work tomorrow.”

“Harry!” Melinda objects.

“What?” Harry laughs. “She is part of the family and might as well work in getting us more money. You surprise and delight me, Eva, if I must say.”

“Thank you, sir.” I beam, pleased with myself.

“Maybe Troy will finally be serious with his duties when he sees his wife working better than he does.” Harry adds.

“Dad!” Troy blushes, glancing at Eve.

If I have my way, Troy will be out of a job and his inheritance but I spare Harry those details.

“What are you thinking?” Eve whispers as we walk out of the Whitpress' mansion.

“I don't understand.” I frown.

“You aren't the Eva I know.” She narrows her gaze at me. “You said out loud to everyone in school you just wanted to be Troy's wife.”

She shouldn't have gone after him if she knows that.

“Dreams change.” I shrug.

“Not so fast.” She scoffs.

I don't have the chance to reply her as I see a lady in a bloodied dress walk past. She has tears in her eyes and her arm is broken. Her hair is in huge clumps on her head, stuck together by blood and the huge gash on her forehead terrifies me.

I glance at Eve who is still reminding me of the past which disgusts me and realize that she doesn't see her.

Shudders run through me as I realize that I've seen my first ghost. And at the Whitpress' house.

I want to run after the ghost, curious to know about her. There is a buried secret in the Whitpress' mansion and I burn with the fever to uncover it.

My mum walks out and smiles at me. “Well done, my girl.”

I didn't do anything.

She doesn't leave me hanging for long.

“You impressed Harry Whitpress in there, a feat only few had only managed to do.”

I decided to use my brain. That is all.

“Congratulations, Eva.” She smiles.

I chuckle. “I haven't even started the job yet.”

She snorts. “Who cares about that? When will you have time to shop and fawn over your husband as normal billionaire wives should if you are bent over a desk all night wearing your fingers out?”

I narrow my eyes, doubtful I will like what my mum is about to drop. “What are you talking about, mum?”

Her smile goes broader. “Harry just finished talking with your father. You are getting married in two months. He can't wait to make you an official part of the family.”

What? My eyes widen. Aren't we supposed to plan this wedding within a year?

“Two months is too small to plan a wedding.” Eve argues.

Mum snorts. “A wedding can be planned in two weeks when the money is available.”

Mum grins but my heart goes darker and sinks lower as time passes by.

I have to stop that wedding at all costs.

How dare he take my heart for granted? How could I have been stupid with my heart? Was I so blinded with my crush that I didn't notice the signs that I was never his?I remember our first kiss. I had almost melted into the ground with stars dancing behind my eyelids, and fireworks bursting loud in my ears.Did he have the same reaction I had? I had no idea as I had my eyes closed during the kiss and five minutes after it, still reeling with excitement and too shy to glance up at him.I remember our first date. I had been excited about spending time with Tony that I hadn't cared that he had taken me to a neighborhood small restaurant instead of the high-end ones he took his exes to.I've stalked him so much that I know everything about him and love him so much that I don't mind discussing on phone more than me

  • Reborn in Pain and Fury   The Girl With No Personality

Eva’s POV “Make the waist tighter.” Melinda Whitpress orders, flicking her pink manicured fingers around my body frame. The designer's eyes widened, her pupils dilating with fear on my behalf. If she makes the waist any tighter, it's likely I gasp to death within seconds.I don't react though. I'm used to Melinda's overbearing attitude and getting her way. After all, I escaped from the womb of a woman like her.“I don't think that is necessary.” Kathryn, the designer, says, coming to my rescue.Melinda tuts. “Nonsense. A Whitpress bride has to show all her curves.”Kathryn doesn't have to say a word. I know exactly what is running through her mind. It's the same running through mine. I don't have any curves to show, thanks to the rigorous diet Melinda put me on a few days after the engagement.“But,” Kathryn says.Melinda raises a finger, her perfect face crumpled into cracks. She isn't used to being interrupted. “Is she complaining?” She turns to me. “Do you think I'm being ridiculo
