Chapter 3

作者: Nameless
Dad was peeling shrimp for her, and Justin was ladling some soup for her, while Mom kept serving her spoonfuls of food.

“Eat more, Jenny. You’re too skinny.

“I prepared this dish specially for you. I heard you like it.

“Take it slow. Don’t scald yourself.”

They stood around the table under the warm light, smiles stretching across their faces.

The sight was so heartwarming that it hurt.

They looked like a happy family of four.

My presence stuck out like a sore thumb, and I felt like an unwelcomed intruder who interrupted this moment of harmony.

Mom saw me standing there and was stunned for a while.

“Sit down, Melanie. What are you doing just standing there?”

I didn’t say anything as I quietly stared at what was supposed to be my seat.

Jenny sensed my gaze and looked up. She cast me a coy look before bowing her head down again.

She clearly knew that was my seat, but she continued sitting there, unmoving, as though not understanding what I wanted.

I chuckled.

I walked to the table, spooned some food into my bowl, and turned to walk upstairs.

“Stand right there!” Dad called me, looking displeased.

“What are you doing?”

“I don’t have a seat at this table. There’s no need to add one more for me.”

“Is this how you should be talking to your parents?” Mom said with a frown.

“This is Jenny’s first day at our home. Can’t you be more sensible?”

“I’m very sensible, and that’s why I’m leaving.”

Jenny’s eyes turned red in an instant. She bit her lip and said in a tearful voice, “I’m sorry…should I not have come? I’ve made Melanie upset…”

“It’s not your fault, Jenny!” Mom hugged her tight, her heart breaking.

“Melanie’s the one being insensible. Don’t mind her.”

Justin put his spoon down and said with disappointment as he looked at me, “Melanie, what’s with you today?”

I didn’t say anything further.

I simply turned to walk upstairs with my bowl in hand.

-

After dinner, Mom came to my room with a bowl of soup.

“Melanie, you didn’t have a proper dinner. I specially had the chef prepare this for you.”

She put the bowl of soup on the table with an ingratiating tenderness in her voice.

It was my favorite beef and barley soup, but looking at that bowl of soup didn’t bring any warmth to my heart.

That was because I could tell from that conflicted look of hesitation on her face that she clearly had a favor to ask from me.

“Mom, just speak your mind.”

I cut straight to the chase to save her time from thinking of an opening for herself.

Mom stood stunned before smiling awkwardly.

“It’s not anything major, just…”

She paused for a moment, choosing her words carefully.

“I want to discuss something with you. Can you switch from honors classes to regular classes?”

My spoon froze in midair.

“Jenny is from a small town and isn’t familiar with anything here,” Mom said almost pleasingly.

“You’re her elder sister, it’ll be great if you could take care of her in school. You do excellently in school, and it doesn’t matter which classes you attend, does it?”

I looked down at the bowl of soup.

Steam was rising from it, fogging up my glasses.

At that moment, swallowing a mouthful of the soup suddenly became a burden to me.

I put the bowl down and looked up at Mom.

“No.”

Mom frowned.

“Just help me this once, won’t you? Jenny is an introvert, and she might be lonely in school without anyone with her.”

“So you’d rather sacrifice me?”

I spoke every word calmly and clearly.

“I worked hard to qualify for honors classes as a means to enter the top colleges in the country.”

Mom was starting to panic.

Don’t go hungry.”Dad would always remind me, “Tell me if you need anything. Don’t keep everything to yourself.”Justin would call me every week, asking, “Melanie, have you been well? Has the schoolwork pressure been too much? Do you need me there to keep you company?”They were trying to make things up to me in all sorts of ways. They were trying to heal the rift and mend our broken relationship.I accepted them all.“Thank you.”“Got it.”“No need, I’m doing well.”My answers were always short, succinct, and distant. Each time Mom heard my response, she would

“Melanie, wait up!”There was panic in her trembling voice.I stopped in my tracks but didn’t turn back.“I’m sorry,” Mom said, holding back tears.“I was wrong. I shouldn’t have doubted you.”Dad walked over, his eyes red.“Melanie, I apologize to you. I shouldn’t have blamed you before I got to the bottom of the matter.”I quietly listened to them.I listened to their apologies that came way too late.I said lightly, “Got it.”Mom wanted to chase after me, but Dad held her back.“Give her some space.” Dad’s voice was low and filled with deep guilt. The three of them stood there, looking at me walk away. They were at a loss for what to do.-When I returned to the classroom, Sasha pounced on me immediately.“Melanie! “Melanie, I’m begging you. Admit your mistake…”Tears fell down her cheeks as she pleaded, and the murmurs in the crowd grew louder.“Her younger sister is so good to her, pleading her case even at a time like this.”“Exactly. How unlucky of her to have an elder sister like this!”Jenny couldn’t hold back the smug look in her eyes when she heard what the crowd was saying. She looked at me, the corner of her lips lifting in a smirk. It was time.I said unhurriedly, “Has the video finished playing?”My voice was very calm.Silence ensued in the hall.“In that case, scroll to 1:32 of the video.”I looked at the director of academic affairs.“Zoom in to her side profile.”The director was in a daze for a moment before recovering from his initial shock and doing as he was told. The image was zoomed in.The cheater had exposed her side profile to the surveillance camera when she turned around. It was just for a moment, but it was clear enough. The crowd erupted.“Wait, why

“Melanie, say something about it! Everyone in school is talking about it. Aren’t you going to try to clear your name?”I sat back down on my seat and leisurely flipped through my book.“Don’t be so anxious.”“Why not?!” Sasha was on the verge of tears.“Do you know what others are saying about you? Someone said that you stopped at nothing to be enrolled in honors classes, and someone even said that your family donated money to the school to quell all those rumors.”“Let them talk.”I looked out the window.I saw Jenny talking to a bunch of girls in the field, grieving and lamenting over something. She was putting on such a great act, just like she did in my past lifetime.“Sometimes, the more you get anxious, the more mistakes you make.“Wait and see, and you’ll be able to see through everyone’s true colors.”The news spread faster than I had imagined. That afternoon, Dad and Mom received an urgent call to come to the school for a meeting.Even Justin rushed back from abro

Shock, and a tinge of… disappointment? She was waiting for me to fight back and argue with Dad and Mom, and for Dad to tell the principal to transfer me to regular classes. That way, she would be able to continue pretending to be that kind and understanding younger sister who unfortunately received the cold shoulder from her elder sister.I refused to give her that chance.I remained bowing. It was so quiet in the room that only our breathing could be heard.Jenny said with a trembling voice, “Don’t… don’t act this way…”She was starting to panic.Mom said in a gentler tone, “Jenny, look.
