“She's still alive?”
From her scent, I knew it was Freya. My best friend.
I tried to force my eyes open, but failed miserably. Tears rolled down my cheeks as intense pain tore through me. My body didn't feel like mine anymore.
Three hours ago, I walked into the pack hospital for a prenatal check up. After getting what was meant to be a vitamin shot from the doctor, I ended up in this state, bleeding until she told me I'd lost my pup.
I had clawed desperately for consciousness, fighting with everything in me to at least open my eyes, but the pain that greeted me left me groaning.
She must have come to take care of me. To make sure I was okay. Even with all that pain, my heart felt light. Having such a friend that comes to me when I need her most, was a blessing.
Then suddenly, I felt her fingers on my throat, hooked under the Luna necklace I've always won. It was a symbol of my status as the pack's Luna. My identity. She yanked with so much force that the clasp bit into my skin. Pain exploded as the necklace snapped free.
What is she doing?
My eyes finally cracked open just in time to see Freya putting the necklace around her neck.
She looked down at my horrified face. Bent down and patted my cheeks.
“Don't look so shocked,” she smiled. “This was supposed to be mine anyway. I'll just take it now.”
I tried to speak, tried to let out just one word to understand what was going on. Surely it wasn't what I was thinking… Freya has been my best friend since we were girls. We grew up together, did every single thing together. I'd even elevated her mum's status to pack doctor. There was no way she'd turn against me.
But reality always has a way of being cruel.
Freya bent, looking me in the eye until her face filled my vision. She let out a smile, a mocking one.
“Ohhh, you look so sad,” she laughed.
“You didn't think I'd let you carry that thing to term?” She pointed at my stomach.
“The little bastard is already gone,” she grinned at me.
“My mum sure did a good job poisoning you today. Congratulations to me, the thing in your stomach is finally gone.”
Stopping in front of the bed, she slammed her fist into my stomach.
“Just making sure, it's gone.” She grinned.
Pain tore through me. But that wasn't what hurt most. The pain of finding out this way that the person I trusted the most in this world could go to such lengths to hurt me.
“Don't give me that wounded puppy look, Isolde. You didn't really think I'd allow you to give birth to Bryan’s child?”
“Listen here,” she grabbed my collar, yanking me up.
“I will be the only woman to give Bryan an heir. You made a big mistake getting pregnant!”
Freya kept on speaking, laying several curses on me. There was no telling she wouldn't tear me into pieces.
With every last bit of strength in me, I mindlinked my mate, Bryan.
“I need your help, please come,” my broken voice sounded through the mind link, making sure he knew I was in danger.
I panted as strength slowly left my body.
“The fool just mindlinked me. Why isn't she dead yet?” A very familiar voice sounded from outside the door, drowning every other sound.
“Increase the dosage. I'm the new Alpha now. I don't have time to stand here and wait for her to die,” Bryan's voice filtered into the room.
I froze, my body stiffened. My heart shattered into pieces.
I'd given up everything just for him. I made my father hand him the Alpha title just two days ago and now this happened.
“The old Alpha and the others have already been taken care of. She's the only one left now,” he kept saying.
“You need to be fast. So we can dump their bodies together. Remember the plan is to make everyone think rogues broke in and killed the entire family.”
My parents. My brother. He'd killed them?
No…no. What have I done? I forced myself to move but I couldn't.
Freya let out a cold laugh, pushing her index finger on my forehead.
“Don't even try. Just wait for your death,” she whispered.
“I don't understand why you're reacting this intensely ... Come on Isolde. You're smart enough to know throwing yourself at a man won't make him yours.”
“Bryan has never loved you. You were too lovestruck to notice. He's my true mate, Isolde!” She giggled.
“You know, he only approached your family and got married to you because he wanted your family's power, wealth and resources. Now that he has it all. You've completely lost value to him.”
The door opened again, this time Freya's mum, the pack doctor walked in and injected yet another dosage of medication into my body.
I lost all hope. I closed my eyes, gritting my teeth.
My consciousness slowly began to fade.
I'd almost succumbed to the darkness when a loud roar resonated. The sound of the door hitting the ground echoed.
Someone rushed into the room in hurried steps, tearing off the fluids connected to my body.
“Make sure none of them escapes,” I heard a familiar voice say.
It was Kairos.
The same guy I'd rejected over and over again for Bryan.
He pulled me into his arms and broke down.
“I'm sorry, Isolde. I failed you. I shouldn't have listened when you told me to let you be. I should have forced you to stay by my side.”
He'd warned me time and time again to stay away from Bryan. But I'd pushed him away. Now I'm paying for it.
Hurt clawed at my heart.
Moon goddess, I do not deserve this ending.
I've never harmed anyone. Never plotted evil.
All I gave was love, like you teach us to. I deserve a second chance…
“I'll give you a second chance,” her serene voice sounded.
“But you won't be the only one getting this chance.”
(ISOLDE)Panic coiled tight in my chest, sharp and suffocating. Bryan’s hands were locked on my arms, his face inches from mine. I had no clue how to break free from the mess I’d walked straight into. Just as dread settled heavily deep within me, a startled yelp cut through the dark silence right beside me.In the exact same second, the heavy iron cellar door swung wide open.My heart dropped completely. This was it. I’d fallen headfirst into their perfectly laid trap.I could still feel his hands firmly gripping my arms. I braced myself for the worst. I waited for the teacher’s shocked angry voice upon finding us like this, our current position would clearly be misunderstood. Freya and Bryan’s plan was finally going to land exactly how they wanted. I clenched my jaw, hating I’d fallen so easily for this. The bright outdoor light from the bonfire flooded into the dim room, burning my eyes. I looked up toward the open door. There stood the teacher, her gaze sweeping fast across the
(ISOLDE)Barely a minute after the announcement, Freya walked straight toward me. Just like always, her expression was warm and jovial for anyone watching. She stopped directly in front of me, tilting her head with that familiar fake soft smile she always wore when she was about to corner me into something.“Isolde, you promised to join my team before the trip,” she said smoothly, her eyes lighting up and she smiled warmly at me. “You have to come with me now for the pairing game…hurry up. You don’t want to keep the others waiting,” she said aloud, bringing attention to us and grabbing my arm.I knew better than to refuse outright. Saying no now would paint me as petty, uncooperative, and bitter in front of the entire pack. I simply nodded and followed along with her without a single word of pushback.Getting to where her teammates were. It was me, Freya, Bryan, and three of her minions. Our small group stood clustered together by the bonfire edge. Once everyone stood with their tea
(ISOLDE)The bonfire was quick to arrive. It was the evening of the same day it was announced. Usually, the academy announces events weeks ahead or worse a day or two ahead. Announcing it on the very same day felt suspicious. I knew Bryan must have pulled his future Alpha card to push it forward. Still, I went.I headed to my locker, grabbed a few essentials, then walked toward the school bus that was already waiting alongside the other students. I spotted Freya about to climb onto it right beside me. The moment her eyes landed on me. She halted her steps , turning towards me and smiling at me. I forced myself to return her smile. But it still came out a little tight-lipped. I covered the distance between us. We stepped onto the bus together.Just as we got into the bus fully, I suddenly noticed Kairos. So he just didn’t show up for the urgent gathering earlier. He was sitting close to the window, the seat next to him empty. Bryan sat right behind him. As I tried to look away, Brya
(ISOLDE)Letting out that declaration, my fingers tightened around the cool ceramic of my teacup, my heart hammering hard against my ribs, I forced my features to stay calm.Straightening my features, I turned back to my mother, my voice coming out quiet and careful.“When exactly are you planning to leave for grandmother’s pack?”She brushed a stray strand of hair back from my face, her expression soft.“About a week from now, darling. Benita needs a little time to wrap up her duties here in the pack hospital before we depart.”A week. Momentary relief alongside a cold dread hit my chest. It was not much time, but it was something. I had seven days to come up with a way to keep her away from Benita’s manipulations, to stop the lies before they could take root. I just had to figure out how.I nodded slowly, forcing a faint smile onto my face. “I understand. I hope grandmother feels better soon.”Mother leaned over and brushed her palm against my cheek before gathering her tea tray and
(ISOLDE)Kairos went still. For a second, something flickered across his face, surprise, maybe even confusion at how strongly I'd reacted. I wasn’t so sure but it was one of these. His grip on my wrist loosened."Why do you look so surprised?" he asked, studying me carefully. "My brother survived an accident years ago. He's been recovering away from the pack ever since. He rarely shows his face in public, so most people don't even remember he exists."I barely registered the rest of what he said.My mind had already raced back to my past life, to the very first time I'd heard Kairos's name. Everyone spoke of him as the sole Alpha heir of Darkridge pack, the only son left after his older brother died in an accident years ago. That was the story I and everyone else were told. But now Kairos was telling me his brother had never died at all.If this piece of my memory was wrong, what else had I gotten wrong?I pulled my wrist free from his grip, gently this time, and stepped back, trying
(KAIROS)Transferring schools in the middle of the semester was not on my bucket list year, but having an insufferable elder brother pushed me to. Arriving at the vast campus, my wolf suddenly went wild. Fighting for dominance. And that was the exact moment I sighted her. Dark hair, deep brown eyes that left me hypnotised. Her scent was akin to honey and vanilla. It was hard keeping my wolf at bay. “Mate.”The sound rumbled from the depths of me. I stared at her from a distance, waiting. The mate pull isn’t felt by one mate. It’s felt by two, so normally her gaze was supposed to find mine but that never happened.I kept my distance, trying to figure out what might be wrong. Then she ditched her boyfriend and chose me during the spar. I thought she finally felt it, but was soon proved otherwise. I kept my face void of emotions and kept watching her. Up until she came to sit next to me in the infirmary, looking like she had something to say but before she could get those words out. B
