Chapter 5

作者: Much Better
"Mr. and Mrs. Clark, congratulations! Your son getting into Ashford University is incredible. Like father, like son!"

"Horace has a bright future ahead of him. Looks like the Clarks have a worthy successor."

Sebastian and Molly beamed with pride.

Horace stood beside them in an expensive custom suit, looking like a prince surrounded by admirers. He accepted the praise with a reserved smile, chin slightly lifted.

At that moment, one of the guests asked curiously, "Mr. Clark, didn't you have another son? I thought there were two heirs in your family. Why isn't the other one here tonight?"

Sebastian's smile stiffened for a moment. His tone turned casual, almost dismissive.

"Oh, Brian? Don't mention it. His grades were a mess. He only got into an average in-state college. Nothing compared to Horace. An occasion like this probably feels awkward for him, so he chose not to show up."

Molly quickly added, "He's not our biological child, after all. Different genes, different results. His scores were quite a bit lower. He probably feels embarrassed, so he stayed away."

While Sebastian and Molly continued explaining things away and Horace basked in the compliments, the party slowly returned to its lively rhythm.

Suddenly, a commotion broke out near the entrance. The butler rushed into the hall, breathless, his voice shaking with excitement.

"Mr. and Mrs. Clark! The state officials are here. And there are a lot of university admissions officers with them!"

The room fell into stunned silence.

State officials? University admissions officers?

"They must be here for Horace," someone whispered. "There are plenty of early admission students, but only someone like Horace could attract attention from people at that level. I'm impressed!"

Sebastian and Molly were both shocked and delighted. They hurriedly straightened their clothes.

Horace lifted his back even straighter, the perfect smile spreading across his face as he prepared to receive this unprecedented honor.

A group of people in jackets quickly walked into the hall. Leading them was a senior official from the state education department.

Behind him followed several professors and recruiters wearing university badges on their chests.

Ashford University, Kingsbridge University, Bayview University, Redwood State University…

Representatives from nearly every top university in the country were there.

Sebastian's voice trembled with excitement as he hurried forward and reached out both hands.

"Mr. Roffe! Mr. Morrison! Welcome, welcome. Having all of you here tonight is truly an honor for our family."

Esmond Roffe, the Education Commissioner, immediately grabbed Sebastian's hand. His voice boomed with enthusiasm.

"Mr. Clark, congratulations! You've raised an incredible son. A true top talent for the country!"

Sebastian blinked, a little confused, and instinctively glanced toward Horace. "Mr. Roffe, you're too kind. Horace getting into Ashford University is certainly impressive, but it's not quite…"

"Horace?"

Esmond paused, looking slightly puzzled.

"Oh, your younger son? The one who got into Ashford University's physics department? Yes, I heard about that. Very good. Quite impressive."

He nodded politely.

But his attention had already drifted away, his eyes scanning the crowd, as if he were searching for something precious.

The guests exchanged confused looks.

It was obvious now. These important people hadn't come for Horace.

Horace himself had just opened his mouth to introduce himself, but he froze in place.

The color drained from his face.

At that moment, Esmond's gaze suddenly stopped at a corner of the hall.

He was looking at me.

I was standing there in simple clothes, still wearing the uniform from my shift at the coffee shop, not even having time to change.

Esmond's eyes lit up instantly. A broad smile spread across his face as he pushed through the crowd and strode toward me.

"There you are, Brian!"

I cut Sharon off calmly."What's done is done. If you're carrying someone else in your heart and can be fooled that easily by a few tears and lies, then whether in our past life or this one, you're not worth another minute of my time."Sharon's hand froze midair. The last bit of color drained from her face. She looked at me one final time. Then she turned around and walked out of the coffee shop with heavy steps, slowly disappearing into the noisy crowd outside.Horace's ending ended up mirroring the life he had lived before.Only this time, it was even more miserable. The charge of false accusation stuck. The Clarks used every connection and every dollar they could to keep him out of jail. But the stain on his name never went away.Ashford University revoked his admission without hesitation. Every bit of prestige he had bragged about vanished overnight.Sebastian and Molly completely gave up on him. They handed him a sum of money, as if they were paying off an embarrassing

Laura's eyes landed on Horace's tear-streaked face.Something in her expression hardened, as if she had made up her mind. She suddenly lifted her hand and pointed straight at me."Officer! It was him! It was Brian! He gave me 1,000 bucks and told me to teach Horace a lesson. He said I only had to scare him, make him look bad… I made a stupid mistake. He's the one who told me to do it!"At some point, Sebastian and Molly had also arrived at the shop entrance. The disappointment on their faces made it look as if they were seeing me for the first time, even after raising me for more than ten years."Brian!"Horace leaned slightly closer. His voice dropped so low that only I could hear it."You're finished. The state officials called you an outstanding young talent. I'm really curious what kind of face you'll make when you end up in prison."I didn't panic or argue.Instead, I calmly raised my hand and pointed toward the security camera in the alley behind the shop."Officer, the

I politely declined Esmond and the professors' enthusiastic offers. Instead, I calmly signed my name on the admission letter from North River State College, majoring in finance.Their top program and the strong local connections I could form there were more than enough ground for me to build something real.Prestigious universities had their shine, but I knew exactly what kind of soil I needed if I wanted to grow fast and grow tall. While waiting for the semester to begin, I kept working at the coffee shop. The floating comments didn't stop.[Wow, national champion, and he's still serving drinks at a coffee shop?][What's with the fake modesty? I tied up two heavy black trash bags and pushed open the back door.At the alley entrance stood a large green dumpster. I walked over, ready to toss

Esmond's voice rang with excitement and approval."Congratulations, Brian! In the recently concluded Spark Cup National Youth Coding Championship, you won first place by an overwhelming margin."Your project, the Smart City Dynamic Traffic Optimization and Monitoring System, impressed every judge on the panel. They all agreed it's one of the most innovative and practical projects we've seen in years. You've uncovered incredible potential for the future of artificial intelligence in this country!"The entire hall went silent. It wasn't the polite kind of silence, but the stunned kind.People stared, wide-eyed, trying to process what they had just heard.Esmond kept hold of my hand. Then he turned toward Sebastian and Molly, who looked frozen in place, and Horace, whose face had turned completely pale. His voice rang across the hall."Mr. and Mrs. Clark, your family is really lucky. With this national first-place award, Brian has caught the attention of every top university in th
