When Adela saw Marah walk in, her gaze quickly shifted away. Running into her first thing in the morning left her feeling distinctly uncomfortable.

She tugged Cici over to sit down.

Cici looked exhausted. “My brother’s at tutoring classes. My mom had me play his game for him so he wouldn’t get distracted.”

That left Adela speechless. Cici’s brother was in high school and obsessed with gaming. His mother was afraid it would ruin his focus, so she had her daughter play in his place. Cici’s mom definitely had… creative thinking.

After a moment, Cici suddenly realized something and whispered, “I saw the president’s car when I was parking just now. Is Layson here at Starry today too?”

With the big boss showing up, of course Cici was on edge—it was like being a student who suddenly spotted the headmaster or principal. It was the kind of presence that made everyone instantly snap to attention.

Adela nodded and answered softly, “He’s here. He’s attending the senior management meeting today.”

In front of the elevator down the hall, a woman in office attire came running toward them, looking disheveled and desperate.“Emma, please, help me. Somebody, please help me!” she cried, her voice filled with despair, echoing through the whole floor.Adela’s hair stood on end instantly. She didn’t even notice the tea splashing onto the back of her hand. The woman looked on the verge of collapsing, her appearance pitiful.Emma rushed out of the office. “Eve, why did you come to the development department? What happened to you? You… you… who did this to you!”Emma stopped short when she saw the bruising under the woman’s collar.People from all over the floor poured into the hallway. Many were asking what had happened, whether they should call the police. The woman, Eve, was trembling as she gripped Emma’s hand, her hoarse voice muffled by sobs. Adela and the others, standing farther away, couldn’t hear clearly—just the repeated words:“Run!” Eve kept saying it over and over. Adela wasn

Adela’s pace visibly slowed when she saw Marah straighten up. Her face was expressionless, but her eyes held undisguised disgust and anger.Marah’s voice was cold. “Adela, I want to talk to you.”Adela glanced at the people waiting for the elevator, her expression just as blank. “You and I have nothing to talk about.”She watched the elevator numbers tick down toward 1, and only when the doors opened did she step in with the crowd. At Starry, she carried her own kind of icy shield; no matter how crowded it got, no one dared stand too close.Sometimes she could even amuse herself in moments like this—rumors did have their perks. The onlookers kept their distance out of “courtesy.”The moment the elevator doors began to close, Marah shoved her way in, her eyes locked on Adela the entire time.Adela kept her expression calm, eyes fixed on the floor numbers, not giving Marah even a glance.Even after exiting the elevator, Adela’s steps were light and unhurried. Without a sideways look, sh

Layson was genuinely a little surprised this time. He raised an eyebrow. “Did you hear that from someone, or did you figure it out yourself?”She answered honestly. “Last time, when you were there and Carlton said all those things, it got me thinking.”Layson studied Adela, and what he thought was—she really was sharp. Most of the time, she was so absentminded it made him worry, but every now and then she was unexpectedly perceptive. After washing his hands, he pulled a paper towel to dry them, then wrapped an arm around her and led her out—not to the study, but to the living room sofa.He pulled her into his lap. His handsome face was calm and relaxed as he sat with her, watching the mindless TV show.“It was his suggestion. I agreed. Six months has been more than enough for Carlton to figure out the inner workings of Starry.”His low, deep voice filled the living room, making Adela’s mind drift for a moment. She carefully thought through the meaning of his words.Layson had clearly

Adela hesitated for a moment before asking softly, “Don’t you feel even a little curious?”Layson raised an eyebrow at her, his expression faintly puzzled. “Curious about what? I’ve never even met this woman, Susan.”Adela reminded him, “You have. At Nightfall, the day Cici was kidnapped.”“Oh,” Layson took a second to think back. “The woman who said I was blind? Someone like that, who clearly wouldn’t live long, being forced to write a will and jump off a building—it makes sense. You don’t need to overcomplicate the whole thing.”He had actually assigned people to keep an eye on Susan for a while. After reviewing her background, he figured she wouldn’t need his intervention—someone else would take care of her sooner or later. And sure enough, it didn’t take long. His expression didn’t even shift; he wasn’t surprised at all.Layson’s words completely caught Adela off guard. After a pause, she asked, “You mean to say Susan’s death was the work of an old enemy?”She had briefly consider

Adela still looked puzzled, but from Layson’s expression, he clearly wasn’t joking. She said, “Don’t tell me Mr. Reed’s arrangement is some kind of fatherly love. If you say that, I’m going to laugh.” The girl was annoyed and shot her man a glare. In her mind, Mr. Reed was already a completely rotten man. Married and cheating, treating his own children poorly—any one of those was enough to drag him out for a good beating. If Layson dared make excuses for someone like Mr. Reed, she was fully prepared to make him sleep in the guest room tonight.Layson noticed the dark look on her face, the corner of his lips lifting slightly. His thin lips brushed her ear, gently catching her earlobe as he murmured, “Baby, don’t be mad. I’m really afraid of you.”Her ears were one of Adela’s most sensitive spots, and with him teasing her like that, her stiff body instantly went soft. Her anger wasn’t really aimed at him anyway. After a few half-hearted struggles, she gave in.After teasing her for a bi
