When I open my front door, Jay is standing there with a big smile on his face.
“What’s up?” I ask shaking his hand.
“The sky and the sun and the clouds.” He says laughing at his own joke.
“Come in.” I say moving to the side so he can walk through. I close the door behind him and turn to follow him down the hallway.
“This place is coming along.” He says when we walk into the living room.
“Yeah, it took a lot to get here.” I say looking proudly around my house. 7 years of school later I’m finally here. There was a time when I didn’t think I would get here. It has been a long and tedious ride.
“I’m so proud of you man,” Jay says walking closer to me and giving me a brotherly hug.
“Thank you, thank you,” I say hugging him back.
“Speaking of I bought you this. A little housewarming gift.” He says handing me a bottle of Hibiki.
“Wow, man,” I say looking at the bottle appreciatively.
“You deserve it, man. This is incredible, you’re incredible.” He says a little emotional.
“Thank you so much,” I say walking to the kitchen. “We should have some,” I say looking back at him.
“No. That’s yours, enjoy it.” He says smiling at me.
“I would love to share a glass with you,” I say and he shakes his head no.
“Then you should buy a bottle we can enjoy together. That one is to celebrate you and your accomplishments. I bought it for you, so you can sit back and savor it at your own time.” He says and I nod.
He walks to the kitchen table taking a seat.
“Do you want a beer?” I ask placing the whiskey in the cabinet. I’ll find a special place for it later.
“I would love some beer.” He says and I walk to the fridge to get a couple. “Did you have Junior this weekend?” He asks looking at a pile of comic books on the kitchen table. I hand him his beer and I sit on the chair next to his
“Yeah man, we had the best weekend ever. It’s crazy how grown he is. He’s teaching me so much.” I say pointing to the comic books.
“You feel like you have to catch up.” He says reading my mind.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to do since I came back, but it feels like I’m not making any progress,” I say letting out all these emotions for the first time. He’s grown so much that I feel like I don’t know who he is.
“You’ll get there, these things take time.” He says making me smile.
“What?” He asks surprised.
“Shalom told me the exact same thing,” I say and he looks at me with too much interest, the look on his face is making me uncomfortable.
“What the hell is the story there?” He asks and I can tell he’s been waiting a long time to ask me that.
“Shalom didn’t tell you?” I ask curious to know what she said.
“No.” He says still looking at me with that creepy overly curious look.
“We dated in high school,” I say and his face lights up.
“Dated?” He asks looking at me closely.
“Yeah, we had a pretty intense relationship once,” I say and my entire body gets goosebumps.
“But then you had a baby with someone else?” He asks looking at me confused.
“She broke up with me suddenly, and a year later I had Junior,” I say and I can see the confusion in his face grow.
“Okay.” He says as if he’s trying to make it make sense in his head. “So now?” he asks after a moment
“Now, nothing,” I say and he looks at me like I’m dumb.
“So we’re going to pretend like that moment the two of you had when she walked in didn’t happen.” He says calling me out.
“It wasn’t a moment. I was just shocked to see her. I didn’t expect to see her there.” I say lying to him and myself. He looks at me like he’s not buying this crap at all.
“”So you’re saying that there;s nothing there. At all” He says looking worried for me.
“It was shock.” I say and he looks at me blinking more than usual.
“Okay.” He says smiling at me a little.”When are we buying the engagement ring?” He asks and I look at him confused, is he even listening to what I’m saying?
“For Shalom? Why would I…”
“For Olive.” He says interrupting me. “Once upon a time, you said that you were going to buy a house and then an engagement ring. Do you remember?” He asks and I take a deep breath to calm my heart. The thought of getting married to Shalom got my heart going.
“I’m not ready yet,” I say and he nods at me.
“Well, tell me when you are. I’ll be happy to help you out.” He says smiling at me.
“I’ll keep that in mind,” I say smiling at him too. “Although I think I should be the one accompanying you to the jewelry store. When are you going to marry that woman?” I ask and he smiles at me his eyes sparkling. He does that whenever I ask about Farrow.
“I asked her dad for her hand in marriage.” He says smiling like a little kid.
“Really, when?” I ask excited by the thought of him tying the knot. He and Farrow are amazing together; they deserve all the happiness in the world.
“I asked him about a week ago.” He says looking at me seriously.
“What did he say?” I ask realizing then that her father might have said no.
“He was so happy; he hugged me and gave me his blessing. I got the best reaction in the world.” He says his voice thick with emotion.
“Congratulations,” I say tapping him on the shoulder a little.
“Thanks, man. When I tell you I was so nervous, I was sure he was going to say no.” He says looking at me with a strained face.
“They wouldn’t have said no. They love you.” I say thinking of Farrow’s parents they adore him. He has the best future in-laws in the world.
“I know but marriage is different. Some fathers feel a way about their daughters; I knew I had to have my shit together before I thought about asking her to marry me. Her dad is a serious and proud man. I had to go to him with respect.” He says and I know exactly what he means. I worked hard to get my shit together for someone too. It means a lot to be able to stand tall knowing you’re a man.
“I know what you mean man,” I say because there really isn’t anything more you can say.
We sit there in silence for a moment just letting the emotions evaporate. This got emotional very quickly.
“When are you going to ask her to marry you?” I ask smiling at him.
“In two weeks.” He says surprising me.
“That’s really soon,” I say looking at him excitedly. “Do you know how you’re going to do it?” I ask after a beat.
“I’m taking her to Kenya.” He says proudly/ he knows she’s going to love it because Farrow loves Kenya.
“She’s going to love it.” I say patting on the back again.
“That’s what I’m counting on. Can you imagine if she said no?” He asks looking horrified all of a sudden.
“If she does say no, not that she will but if she does you try again. You give her time to think about it and you try again.” I say and he nods slowly.
“I hope she says yes. I know she’s going to say yes.” He says looking at me for confirmation.
“Yes, she’s going to say yes and then we’re going to have a huge party to celebrate.” I say holding him by the shoulders and shaking him a little. He needs to snap out of the negativity.
“Yes, she is.” He says smiling, I see the joy coming back to his face. “This is nerve-wracking.” He says taking a swig of the beer.
“It is, you’re putting your heart on the line. But the beauty is you’re doing it for someone you love and she loves you too. Love is a beautiful thing man.” I say and he gives me a full-on smile.
“You’re right.” He says looking at me intently.
“Of ‘course I’m right,” I say and the two of us laugh.
“Thank you man.” He says when we stop laughing.
“You know I’ve got you back no matter what.” I say looking at him in the eyes so that he knows I what I’m saying.
“And I’ve got yours, always.” He says looking at me with the same intensity I’m looking at him. I knew from the first time we met that he was my brother.
“I’m at your gate open up.” Jay says when I answer. “Okay.” I say ending the call and opening the gate for him. About a minute later he knocks on my door. I go to the door and open it. “Hi.” I say when I open the door. “Hi beautiful.” He says leaning in for a hug. “I brought an old friend.” He says just as my eyes collide with Kane’s. I smile to hide the turmoil of feeling I feel when I see him. “Welcome, please come in.” I say letting them both in. “Thank you for having us over.” Jay says as they follow me to the kitchen. “It’s my pleasure,” I say leading them to my kitchen table. “Have a seat.” I say looking from Jay to Kane. “Thank you.” Kane says smiling. He looks around my house with so much interest. “I’ll get the wine.” I say going to the fridge. I need a moment to get my emotions in check. I didn’t think I would see Kane so soon. His being here is throwing me off; I don’t know how to feel about him being in my personal space. “This looks good.” Jay says looking at the
“Hey.” Kane says when I answer my phone. “Hi” I say on the end of the receiver. We stay for a long time; I don’t know what to say because I wasn’t expecting his phone call. I don’t know why he’s silent; he’s the one that called me. “It’s Kane.” He says like he snapped out of something. “I know how you are?” I say trying to move the conversation along. “I’m good and I am outside your house.” He says and I almost trip over myself. I walk to my security monitor in the kitchen and look at the screen. And there is a car at my gate. “Okay.” I say not really sure what to say. It’s kind of late for a visit and I just got home myself. I don’t think I have the energy to entertain anyone at this hour. “I was hoping we could talk.” He says sounding so unsure. I wait looking at his car trying to figure out what to do. My mother is home and I don’t want them meeting. But can I really turn him away? “Come in.” I say opening the gate for him. Hopefully, he won’t stay long; he has a girlfriend t
“Thank you for cooking for me.” Olive says raising her wine glass to me. I raise mine and we cheers. “De nada” I say and she smiles at me. “I really needed this night in.” She says taking a bite of her food. “That’s why I did this, we’re both overwhelmed and we needed to slow down and enjoy ourselves,” I say taking a bite of the food and making an appreciative noise. I put my foot in this lamb, it really tastes good. “Well, I appreciate you for being so thoughtful. We should do this more often.” She says smiling at me lovingly. “We should, I need to fly down to Cape Town more,” I say smiling at her and she tilts her head sideways looking at me. “Or I could move in with you.” she says and I almost choke on my food. I look at her to see if she’s joking and she’s serious. “Do you think that’s a good idea?” I ask looking at her cautiously. “Yes. We’re in this forever so why not move to the next step? I want to be with you forever, I don’t see why this is not a good idea.” She says
“Hey beautiful.” My best friend Noni says walking toward my table. I invited her out for brunch because I owe her a nice day out. I’ve been ignoring her like all my other friends. Spending time with Jay has shown me that I need to do better. I can’t use my mother as an excuse forever. “Hey, it’s so good to see you.” I say getting up to give her a hug. “I know, I missed you so much. We haven’t hung out in a long time.” She says when we let go of each other and sit down. “That’s my fault, that’s why I wanted to make up for disappearing on you.” I say and she smiles excitedly. “If that’s the case, I’m ordering all the expensive food on the menu.” She says looking at me mischievously. “You know what? You can order anything you want, but I should warn you I’m calling you when I can’t pay my bills.” I say and we laugh. A waitress comes to take our orders, she orders all the good food on the menu and the waitress leaves. “What’s been going on with you?” She asks when the waitress is go
“I’m so glad you called, I didn’t think I would ever see you again.” Charles says looking at me nervously. I sip my coffee looking at him, I don’t know if another date was a good idea but I’m open. He’s different I’m used to men that are very confident in themselves but I don’t want to judge him too harshly. One date is not enough time to make a conclusion on someone’s character. “I didn’t think I’d call either.” I say and he looks even more nervous. “But a good friend of mine told me to and I’m glad I did,” I say and he smiles at me sweetly. “I need to buy your friend a thank-you gift.” He says looking at me closely. "He loves gifts.” I say smiling at him. “I’m terrible at first dates and when I saw you I got all flustered and put my foot in my mouth.” He says looking at me embarrassed. “I must admit I am concerned. Do you ask every girl you meet to have your babies?” I ask looking at him trying to figure out if he’s playing me. “I do not. That reaction is purely due to you.”
“I wanted to give you a heads up; Shalom came with a date.” Jay says walking past me to get the front door. I look at him open the door and there she is; beautiful as ever. She walks in smiling at Jay and then someone walks in behind her. He greets Jay and then places his hand at the small of her back. I feel heat rise in my face. Shalom looks around the room and I wait for her to see me. I take a sip of my drink looking at how stunning she is. She’s wearing a strappy, loose dress. But the material is clinging to her curves. Her body is showing just enough for you to see that she’s all woman under all that dress. Her skin looks sun-kissed and inviting. It looks so smooth and soft. Her eyes find me and I can feel the electricity from across the room. I look at her unable to take my eyes off her. She takes a big gulp of air and I see her chest move up and down slowly. I can tell she can feel exactly what I’m feeling. I caress her with my eyes, letting her know that she should be stan
I move uncomfortably in the passenger seat of Kane’s car. I wish I had opted to drive to the engagement party. Charles insisted on picking me up, he thought it would be nice if we showed up together. I just didn’t bank on him bailing on me. I can’t believe he left me standing there, he embarrassed me. I move around in the seat again and Kane turns to look at me. “You’re good?” He asks looking back at the road. “I’m okay, I just need to get home and get out of this dress.” I say telling him half truth of the source of my discomfort, the dress is tight but it’s not why I’m so uncomfortable. He is. We’re so close to each other that I can smell his cologne. His scent is all around me and I know it’s going to take a long time for me to forget it. “I was hoping to show you something before I take you home.” He says stopping at a light and turning to look at me. The red light illuminates his face as he looks at me hopefully. “Do you have to show it to me tonight?” I ask looking at his fac
“Why are you looking at me like that?” I ask him when he hands me a glass of wine. “How am I looking at you?” He asks standing in front of me. He sits next to me waiting for me to say something. I take a sip of the wine and look at him. I can’t believe he’s playing the dumb game. He knows how he’s looking at me. I can see the lust written all over his face. I might have been out of the dating game for a long time but I can tell when a man is looking at me with lust. He needs to stop looking at me like that because I’m not sure if I can keep my hands off of him. Tonight was a very emotional for me and being here with him is adding to that emotion. I have a lot of sexual tension stored from all of the lack of sex. I was hoping Charles and I would get to the sex part but he bowed out so quickly I didn’t know what hit me. “How is your son taking to living with you?” I ask changing the subject. “He hasn’t moved in yet” He says smiling a little. “Why is that?” I ask moving a little bi
