[Primus]

When the men dropped me off at the foot of my brother’s old fortress, they called the guards down with a high-pitched whistle so painful I wished I could cover my ears. Unfortunately, I couldn’t even move my hands. Whatever Atremi had drugged me with on the boat gave me the misfortune of being mostly conscious but unable to move. I can feel it, but I cannot scream.

I’ve seen the drug used on prisoners as a child when my father was convinced that forcing me to see horrific things woul

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   098: The Reward

[Atremi] What does it mean for an air drake to have a fated queen, a chosen queen, and a fated mate? One might say that I was blessed. Others might say that I was cursed. As an air drake, or more specifically, a drone, I need a queen to follow. Many drakes find their perfect, fated queen, and in most cases, our queens become our chosen mates. That doesn’t mean we can’t have a fated mate out there too–if we’re lucky, our fated might be our queen as well, or if we are extremely lucky, our fated queen might be open to sharing. But as almost all air drakes never leave the Eastern Air Kingdom, except to serve the Imperial Palace of Luxandra, very few are lucky enough to find that one, or two, drakaina meant for us. When I met Queen Ona, I knew at once that she was part of my destiny. Air drakes need a queen to follow, it’s coded into our DNA, and while Ona is not an air dragon herself, I always felt an undeniable pull. Maybe it was because 50 years later I was destined to be mated to

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   097: Fate's Folly

[Atremi]During our trip east to Imperial City, the rest of Melark’s story slowly unfolded, and I learned more about who the Technicians really were, their purpose, and why they had disappeared so long ago. I had some inkling, from my time working at the palace, but I had been born several decades after the disappearance of the famed imperial scientists. “In truth,” Melark confessed, “We never truly vanished. Not completely. We just shifted focus.” This old drake, nearly a thousand years old, had been trained to serve the courts from the time he had been a small hatchling; his mentor, a distant aunt, had served the courts directly. But by the time he had been ready to take his turn, they had switched from direct influence to a more observational role. “My aunt Kastora worked directly with the Solarian queen. She was an advisor who helped make decisions for the whole empire. After the first great war, our purpose shifted. When I entered court, it was as a scientist, a researcher.

[Atremi] “Consider our bond broken.” Hours have passed since those words were spoken. Maybe even days. I’ve lost time down here, so far from the sun and sky. And yet, the sound of each syllable of my queen’s curse still rings against the walls of my mind in perfect, crystal clarity. There, in the spaces I can’t escape, the harsh melody of her brittle words finds accompaniment with my heart’s tortured beat. And with each thump, I feel the pain of a thousand swords, all aimed at my chest.I’ve survived a thousand battles and have never felt anything nearly as excruciating as the agony of this newly broken bond. This pain is exactly what I deserve. A reminder of the weight of my sins. Because I, Atremi Glaveheart, am forsworn twice over, not by design, but by the consequences of my arrogance. Thirty years ago, I was sent to accomplish a task. At the time, my queen, as leader of the Stellar Rebellion, had taken over her mate’s mission to free the sun dragons from their torturous im

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   095: True Purpose

[Primus] Sitting on a stool, in the center of the room, is a drake made of light, his edges glowing faintly, his head moving slowly from side to side, as if watching an audience. He is wearing a cloak of shadows, as dark as night, ancient runes sewn along the edges of his cloak. He is wearing dark gloves, dark boots, his whole body painted in shades of shadow. It reminds me of Carnelia’s father, the shadow walker. Until he takes off his gloves, revealing hands of a fair, creamy flesh tinged faintly with the palest green. His long curved nails are a darker green, almost black. And then the hood comes down to rest along his broad shoulders. His hair is a shocking shade of green, as bright as spring leaves, short on the sides, and longer as it cascades between his dark horns, the same almost blackish green as his talons. Above his eyes, the color of earth and sand and fallen leaves that glow with flecks of gold, are high, ridged brows, covered in iridescent scales that fade betwe

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   094: The Archon's Voice

[Primus] Sitting in a large, plush chair on the other side of the room is a drake of incredible age. He’s in his bipedal form, his iridescent tail wrapping around him to rest in his lap, his fan-like ears fallen into wrinkled lobes, his golden eyes still sharp despite the visible ache in his bones and joints. Unlike the Crystalborn from the meeting hall, in bipedal form the archon has a shock of white hair that falls to his shoulders in tight curls, looser than Carnelia’s tighter coils. Unless there is another dragon as old in this place, this could only be the Archon. And sitting next to him, with head bowed, is a very young drakaina, one forced into a human form, her head bald and tattooed like a human slave. If it weren’t for the telltale collar around her neck, and the surreal golden glow of her eyes, she could have passed as a small human. She looked no more than 6 or 7 human years old. Practically a hatchling. She’s probably closer to 20–still far from the age of maturity a

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   093: Betrayal and Atonement

[Primus]Everyone turns to glare at Atremi. “An air drake working for Segundus,” Ona spits as a collar is placed around her neck, smoldering her essence under the weight of humanity. “Segundus, Atremi? Please tell me it wasn’t you.” Atremi doesn’t say anything at first, but as the guards slip a cuff around each wrist and his form dims in color and shape, becoming smaller, the first touch of humility I’ve ever seen on him crosses his face. It’s ironic, considering how he belittled me, trapped and tortured my body, all for the sake of his grand plan. Didn’t he ever consider he might receive a touch of his own medicine? Unable to meet anyone’s gaze, he bows his head to look down at his feet.“I am not the thief,” he declares in a flat, even voice as he slowly raises his head to eye the Archon across the room. “Would a thief walk this treasure into this room willingly?” “Perhaps you expected forgiveness?” The liaison’s face twisted with disgust as she translated the Archon’s growl. “We

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   034: Making Connections

[Carnelia]When I first learned I was a dragon, I had no idea what that really meant. Dragons are creatures of energy and power, destined to rule our world by sheer might and fear. They were the terror on the mountain, the monster that could steal away your daughters and sons, forcing them into a li

[KORA][NOW] That night, they had been waiting for us. I’m not sure how they knew, but I know why they took us. We’re too valuable to kill, but too dangerous to leave alone. Collared and shackled, we were transported to the shores of the Crystal Lake, to the center of the Kingdom’s eastern borders,

[Carnelia]As my father, the suddenly warm and substantive dragon, pulls me into his arms, I can feel the blood rushing in his veins and the strong beat of his heart against my face. His scent, which before smelled like the cold of the void, now has a spicier scent, both warm and rich. Even his skin

[Primus] I wasn’t sure what the voice meant at first. Nor did I know if I could trust it. How do I lean into shadows? Do I fall backward into the burning net? Do I turn sideways into the darkness of the room? “You’re overthinking,” the shadow man speaks again.“Just let go.” Let go of what? My an
