“I don’t understand… why are you being so nice to me?”

Vania looked at the man in front of her, her voice soft but laced with suspicion. Her hands still gripped the cup of hot coffee she’d bought from a small café near the park.

The man—someone she had only met a few days ago in front of her family’s house—gave a faint smile.

“Because you look like someone who could use a friend. Besides, not everyone has bad intentions, Vania.”

Vania fell silent. Those words struck her deep. She had been betrayed far too many times to believe them easily—especially after what happened with Devandra and Karen… not to mention her family, who only cornered her further.

The man, who introduced himself as Rafael, had warm eyes. Warm… but strangely, also full of mystery. Every time he spoke, there was a hint in his tone, as if he knew more than he was saying.

“Thank you,” Vania finally replied, averting her gaze. “But I don’t want to trouble anyone by dragging them into my problems.”

Rafael chuckled softly

Devandra’s footsteps sounded heavy on Vania’s porch. This time, the knock on the door was not like it usually was—soft, yet weighed down by something unseen.Vania, who had been pacing back and forth in the living room, immediately stopped in her tracks. She opened the door, and there stood Devandra—his face pale, his eyes tired, his shoulders slightly slumped.“You… look terrible,” Vania said, her tone half-concerned.Devandra let out a long sigh, looking at Vania for several seconds as if trying to draw strength from her. “I… haven’t slept all night. Too much on my mind.”“Come in,” Vania invited. As soon as the door closed, the aroma of the coffee she had brewed earlier filled the room. But even that could not cut through the dark cloud hanging over Devandra’s face. They sat facing each other. For a moment, there was only silence. The ticking clock seemed to measure the distance between the words yet to be spoken.Vania lowered her gaze, her fingers tightly clutching a brown folder

“Livia, we need to talk. Now.”Vania’s voice was cold, without a trace of small talk. Her steps were brisk as she entered her stepsister’s room, making Livia—who had been touching up her lipstick in front of the mirror—startled.“Big sis… what the hell? You could’ve knocked,” Livia tried to smile as if nothing was wrong, but her eyes flickered nervously.Vania slammed the door shut, deliberately loud. “I’m not wasting time. I know you’re involved in whatever’s going on with Karen and Mom.”For a second, Livia froze. Her hand stopped mid-stroke with the red lipstick. “What are you talking about?” she asked with a small, fake laugh.Vania stepped closer, locking eyes with her stepsister. “Drop the act, Liv. I have the documents. Your name is on the list of recipients for transfers from Mom’s secret account.”Livia frowned. “That doesn’t mean anything. Maybe it’s just—”“Don’t even try to deny it!” Vania cut her off, her tone rising. “Do you think I’m stupid? All of this—Devandra, his pr

“I hope you’re ready to hear this,” Adrian’s voice was heavy, almost like a threat.Vania shot him a sharp look. “If this is about Devandra, just say it. I’m done with half-truths.”Adrian pulled a thick brown folder from his leather bag and set it on the small café table they’d chosen for its secluded corner. His movements were deliberate, as if he were handling something that might explode at any second.“What’s this?” Vania asked, her fingers hesitating to touch the folder.“Proof… that Mrs. Rika and Karen have been working together to bring Devandra down,” Adrian replied flatly, though his eyes studied her face as if to gauge her first reaction.Vania froze. Her breath caught in her throat. She knew Mrs. Rika had never truly liked her, but working with Karen? That was beyond reason. “You’re joking, right?”“I wish I were. But unfortunately, no.” Adrian pushed the folder closer. “Open it. See for yourself.”Vania opened it slowly. Her eyes immediately landed on sheets of paper bear

The streetlights flickered, and the night air pierced her skin. Vania walked alone, crossing the empty sidewalk. The sound of her footsteps echoed, bouncing off the walls of vacant buildings. In her hand was only a small purse, but her mind and heart felt heavier than anything she carried. Why am I still here? she thought repeatedly. Why haven’t I left all of this behind yet?Suddenly, from the end of the street, two men appeared. Their faces were mostly covered by hoodies, and their steps slowed as they neared her.“Hey… you look pretty, walking alone at night,” one of them said, his voice raspy.Vania tensed up, quickening her pace, but the two men started following her.“Come hang out with us for a bit,” the other one said, grinning.Vania’s heart raced. She glanced over her shoulder, the gap between them closing. Her hand reached for her phone in her bag, but before she could dial emergency, one of them grabbed her arm.“Let go!” Vania yelled, struggling to break free.“Don’t make

Her hands were still wrapped around the hot coffee she’d bought from a small café near the park. The man—whom she’d only met a few days ago in front of her family’s house—gave a faint smile.“Because you look like someone who needs a friend.
