Nicole's POV

The institute held a small gathering in the common hall that evening.

Marlon had told me it would look strange if I didn't come. Attendant staff were expected to be visible at institute social functions. So I came in my coat and my wig and my glasses and stood near the edge of the wall the way I always did.

The twins were already asleep. Amber was with them, I had checked twice before I left.

Marlon found me within ten minutes, appearing at my elbow with two plates and the e

Nicole's POVI should have taken the stairs. The corridor was empty, the elevator was right there, and I was tired and carrying Tracy's file notes with the east stairwell three corridors back. Five seconds. Doors open, doors close, done.I pressed the button. The doors opened as I stepped in.I was looking at the file when he got in.His shoulder was already past the sensor before I looked up and by then the doors were closing and there was nothing to do but stand at my end of the small space and look at the numbers above the door."Evening," Tate said."Evening," I said. The numbers moved. One. Two then it stopped between floors, as the display flickered and settled on a small orange symbol I recognized as a maintenance fault."Twenty minutes minimum." Right there on the panel in small orange letters, like that wasn't a problem at all.I kept my eyes on the door and my file against my chest and said nothing.Tate looked at the panel, then looked at me. "Twenty minutes.""At least," I

  • Reject Me, Alpha Tate   Chapter 39

Nicole's POVBy Friday evening I had nothing left but a quiet depletion of a week that had asked too much from every direction and left me with the particular tiredness that sleep doesn't fully fix because it isn't the body that's worn out. It's everything underneath.I picked the twins up from the nursery at half past five and walked them home and made dinner on autopilot — pasta, the easy kind, the kind Maple called the good one because it had the sauce he liked — and sat at the table while they ate and contributed approximately nothing to the conversation about whether dragons could also be fish."They could be both," Rosy said. "If they lived near water.""They'd have to breathe underwater though," Maple said. "Dragons breathe fire. Water would put it out.""Maybe they only breathe fire on land," Rosy said. "And underwater they just breathe normally.""That's not how fire works," Maple said.Volcano fish breathe fire," Rosy said, with complete confidence.Maple stared at her. "Vol

Nicole's POVDiana Ashford's Thursday scans were the best results I'd seen all week, and I almost didn't get to see them at all.I was still at my desk reviewing the data when Amber knocked and leaned in. "Diana's morning attendant just called in sick," she said. "Fever. She won't be in."I kept my eyes on the scan. "Who's covering?""That's the problem." Amber stepped fully inside and closed the door. "The protocol medications require someone who actually knows the dosage schedule. I checked the floor roster — there's nobody else qualified, It's you or we delay the round."I looked up then."I know," Amber said quietly.Diana Ashford, Luna of North Maple Pack. A woman I had been treating from a careful distance for weeks without ever being alone in a room with her."Fine," I said, and closed the file. "I'll cover it."I put my mask on, straightened my coat, and went in.Diana looked up when I knocked. A flicker of recognition crossed her face . "Oh," she said. "You're Tracy's attenda

Tate's POV"This is the fourth time I am asking the same question," I said. "When can I see Dr. Carter?"Marlon looked at me with that particular gaze of his."She's reviewing the latest scan data," he said. "She can't be interrupted.""That was last week's answer," I said."It's an ongoing process," Marlon said, pleasantly.I put the pen down. "Mr Marlon.""Yes.""Who is she?"He held my gaze without flinching, most people can barely hold or lock gazes with me, but here he was a mere researcher staring me down. "The most important researcher this institute has produced," he said. "That's who she is.""That's not what I asked.""It's the answer I have," he said."You're protecting her," I said."I'm representing her professional interests," he said. "Which is my job?""From what specifically.""From unnecessary disruption to the protocol," he said. "Your mother is a trial participant, and you are pushing through to see her, she can’t change her standards, because you are an alpha. Now

Nicole's POVIt started at dinner on Tuesday. Maple had been eating his rice then he looked up and said, completely unprompted, "Is the tall man still here?"I kept my fork moving. "Eat your dinner.""I am eating," he said, demonstrating. "Is he still here?""Yes," I said. "He's here for his mother's treatment. You know that."He considered this, chewing. "Does he eat dinner?""I imagine so.""Where?""In the guest dining room, probably," I said. "Maple""Does he have a favourite colour?"Rosy, across the table, turned a page of the book she was not supposed to have at dinner and said nothing."I don't know his favourite colour," I said."You could ask him," Maple said. "I don't ask patients' family members about their favourite colours," I said. "That's not what I'm there for."Maple seemed to find this unreasonable as he ate another spoonful of rice. "I think it's blue," he said. "Or black, he wears a lot of black.""Maple.""Mum I’m just saying," he said. "You could find out.""I'

  • Reject Me, Alpha Tate   Chapter 35

Nicole's POVI should have seen it coming. In hindsight the signs were there — Tracy's evening medication had been adjusted a few days prior, the new protocol requiring a witness signature on the administration log, and when I arrived for the evening round the room was not empty the way it usually was at that hour.Tate was there, standing near the window with his arms loosely crossed. He looked up when I came in. "Evening round," I said."Yes," Tracy said, from the chair. She had the expression of someone who had not engineered this situation but was not displeased by it.I moved to the medication tray. Behind me I was acutely aware of Tate not leaving."The new dosage requires a witness signature," he said. "I'll sign it.""I can call the duty nurse," I said."I'm already here," he said.I kept my hands moving on the tray, he was already here. I had done the calculation before I finished the sentence and already knew I had no way out of it that didn't draw more attention than sim

Nicole's POVTracy was manageable in the morning but was demanding in the way that borders on entitlement, she is someone who has spent decades having things done for her.I moved through her morning routine efficiently. Medication at seven, vitals at seven-thirty, breakfast tray at eight. She spo

Nicole's POV The rooftop lab was quiet. Parkville was already there, his wheelchair angled toward the window with afternoon light across his hands. Marlon came in behind me and closed the door. Neither of them spoke right away and I knew from that alone it was going to be that kind of conversation

Nicole's POV The signing was scheduled for ten in the morning. At nine forty-five I was in the observation room, which was a generous name for what was essentially a small side office with a monitor feed and a locked door. The camera covered the full meeting room — the long table, the chairs,

  • Reject Me, Alpha Tate   Chapter 17

Tate's POVMarlon did not like me.He was professional about it. He never said anything discourteous, never gave me a reason I could point to. But I had spent enough years reading rooms and people to know the difference between a man who was neutral and a man who had decided something about you and
