"Mom, is there a way to prevent them from running this test on me, please?" I muttered through mind link to my mother, who was in front of me as I was being led out of the hospital gently.
My question made her pause her pace and turn her face briefly to me with a drawn look.
"Why? Are you scared of anything? If it is about the pain, don't worry. It would only last for ten minutes and be over. Sorry, you have to go through this, but it is very important." She replied back through the mind, her voice filled with love, but she was unaware that this would be my end.
Bile rose to my throat, my heart pounding violently in my chest as if it would break out of my ribs. I could feel my legs grow weak and my body shivering as we entered the car that would take me to the royal palace.
For the first time I would be brought before the Alpha King, and it wasn't for my initiation.
Normally, the only time I expected to face the alpha was when he would mark me a member of the hunters, just like my parents, and that was to be a week's time since I was already of age.
Alpha Kane has no single restraint in his rage for issues concerning vampires, as his hatred for them stalks through his veins every second. Through my parents, I had learned he vowed to wipe out and overthrow them, even if that would be the only thing he did before dying.
As the car drove away, my eyes glued to the broken window of that ward, and I couldn't hold back my tears, knowing Leo was there and would soon be free while I got unalived.
I felt the urge to tell my parents everything through mind link and also expose Leo's location, but just the thought of it made my heart heavy.
Finally we got to the royal castle and alighted. As we headed in, I could hear my heart beating so loud that I was surprised the men beside me didn't hear it.
Fear shook my entire being the moment I entered the large hall, facing the mighty Alpha in his throne of skulls, eyes flaring, and in the center of the room lay a big bowl of the sizzling liquids.
The Moonshade Elixir.
Any werewolf buried in there would go through a gashing pain deep in the bone, brought on to force out any hidden beast in them.
If they are purebred werewolves, they would get cleansed, but if they are vampires, their beast would take control and reveal their identity.
I had only read about this in books, how unbearable the pain was that it could leave you unconscious for two days.
Never knew in my entire life I would one day be standing here being the one to go enter in that bowl for the test. As part of the hunter's family, I should be the one to bring suspected vampires for testing, but love has destroyed me.
"Greetings, my king... We..."
"This is not a time for any kind of familiarity of greetings. Can someone tell me why she isn't chained when she clearly has this infuriating scent?" Kane roared, veins bulging through his neck and clenched fist as those eyes glared at me furiously.
"My daughter isn't a vampire or has any relationship with them. She was a victim, and we are only doing this to show our loyalty to the safety of this pack. The vampire transferred his scent to her so he could escape." My father replied with a strong tone, facing the king without fear.
Kane grimaced. "So you mean the vampire is still on the loose?"
"Yes, but not for a long time because the border has been shut and every hunter and warrior is on the hunt for him with all the required equipment!" My mother replied this time.
"Diane, you should be part of the hunters hunting this man because only you knew what his face was like, or did he also blind you so that you can't recognize anything that can be used to locate him!" Kane said to me with a narrowed look.
"I..."
Before I could complete my words, the door of the palace was opened, and the Beta walked in with his son, Jaden, and immediately our eyes met I knew I was in another trouble.
He let out a smug face, malice glinting in his eyes as he walked past me with his father. They both bowed in respect to the king.
"You said your son has something to tell us about all this, so I am very eager to hear it. Speak up." Alpha Kane urged with rapt attention, and I felt my heart freeze.
I couldn't breathe for a moment as my eyes locked on Jaden, waiting for the bomb he was about to drop on my head, because I knew he had been waiting for this moment all his life.
He cleared his throat before pulling off his shirt to display the wounds all over his body, which were yet to heal. "All these were done to me by Leo all because of Diane!"
"Because you and your friend wanted to rape me! He rescued me from you monsters!" I lashed out, but my words were useless.
"Why isn't it healed yet? Did this happen today?" Alpha Kane asked with his eyes squinted at the cuts.
"It is not healed yet because it has vampire venom. The vampire we are looking for is Leo, our new math teacher, and guess what? Diane here is his girlfriend, who had kept his secret for him even though she is a hunter who should never hesitate to expose that monster!"
His voice echoed like a horror bell blasting my head.
"You are accusing my daughter falsely, and I won't tolerate that. I am sure you are doing this to get back at her for breaking up with you and moving on!" My mother retorted at Jaden.
"Your daughter is not on my level." He scoffed as he put his shirt back on.
"Go and get Leo here!" Kane ordered.
"He is not in the school or his apartment. At the moment, nobody knows where he is." Jaden's father replied quickly.
"Doesn't that make him the prime suspect? Diane, where is he?"
"I don't know, my King. We are just teacher and student, so there is no way I would know his whereabouts."
Jaden burst into laughter. "I can swear with my life that she knows where he is. You won't believe they had sex in their first meeting in the nightclub!"
"My daughter doesn't go to the club, you prick! Stop this bullshit!" The angry tone of my father hit at him, but he was unmoved.
I was furious at Jaden, wishing I could strangle him to death, but the moment my eyes met with the Alpha's gaze, fear engulfed me.
He believed everything Jaden was spilling and had drawn conclusions. The hatred and disappointment in his expression were vivid enough to make me know my life was about to end.
I really wished I had aborted the baby immediately. I wished I didn't accept to have the vampire scent to save him.
"Just pray you have no trace of the vampire gene in you!" The Alpha growled at me with his eyes blazing with loathing.
"Dip her in!"
Diane's POV “Speed and agility are her strengths. She can vanish in a flicker of shadow and attack from behind, hitting parts of your body that are weak and vulnerable. That’s her tactic.” Leo began teaching me as usual in the private room. Here, no one else can enter, and it was built for his meditation session. According to what he told me, this was a place he hid and wallowed in grief and sorrow over the loss of his mother for years. He would sometimes go feral, breaking everything in his path, roaring and inflicting injuries on himself. In that state, no one around him was safe. That was why a place like this was made and set aside for him.Last night, I came here for training, but he wasn’t around. I heard a rumor that his primal beast had surfaced again, and he had vanished into the forest late in search of someone no one was aware of.Today he is normal again and has begun to train and give me lectures on how I would defeat Zena.He hadn’t mentioned anything about last night,
“Reina!” My voice cracked, heart dropping into my stomach as I ran to her collapsed figure on the ground and lifted her into my lap.Blood smeared her face, and she clung to me in panic, her pale eyes brimming with tears.“Please… save me. I don’t want to die…” Her voice trembled, lips quivering as she looked up at me like I was her last hope—even though she already knew I was a vampire.“Don’t worry. Breathe. Breathe. Take a deep breath. You’re safe now.” I said to her, but she still shook, her chest rising and falling heavily.“He chased me down and attacked me,” she whimpered. “His eyes were full of venom, and he wanted to suck my lifeblood! He’s not like you—he’s different. What did I do to him to deserve this?”I saw the wounds on her body and knew immediately—Leo must have had another flashback of his mother tonight. Those memories always turned him into a monster. And when he recalled that Reina had returned to her pack, he must have hunted her down, unable to resist the opport
The moonlight glowed brighter on his skin, his eyes glistening like ripples on a river as they pierced into mine.He wore a sparkling white shirt tucked into blue trousers, the sleeves rolled up to reveal beautifully inked tattoos along his arms. The shirt was unbuttoned halfway, exposing a broad, sculpted chest.Though the shirt was neatly tucked in like a professor’s, his tousled brown hair gave him a rugged charm.“That was an interesting battle to watch,” he said, his deep voice resonating as if it were speaking directly to my soul. A subtle smile played on his lips.I stood frozen, mouth slightly open, eyes locked on him. I couldn’t tell if this was real or some vivid hallucination. He stepped closer, hands casually tucked in his pockets stood close, his tall figure towering over my small frame. My breath caught.I raised my gaze to meet his, and his smile made my stomach flutter like it was filled with butterflies.“I enjoyed the show,” he said, winking before shifting his eyes
My voice shook as I spoke, the words hitching in my throat. “You did what?”My eyes locked on Jaden, searching for a flicker of doubt, wondering if it was my ears tricking me. But his lips curled into a smirk, his shoulders squared with a smug confidence.“How could you, Jaden?” I said, my voice barely above whispers, my fingers clutching at the edge of my sleeves.“We are not here for long talks!” Jaden’s father's voice was a low growl as his claws elongated in readiness. “Start saying your last prayer because your end is now.”I stepped back, my heels hitting a splintered wood. “My father trusted you,” I muttered, my breath hitching. “He made you his Beta because he believed in your loyalty. Are you really going to ambush his daughter?”His laughter was sharp, like shattering glasses. “You brought it on yourself when you decided to embarrass us and make a mockery of us in the pack’s eyes!”I could feel my pulse racing as he leaned in closer, his hot breath fanning my face and the st
Reina's POV“Here is the woman…” He pointed in the dark room; pride and satisfaction laced his voice.“Isn’t she dead already?” I narrowed my eyes at the motionless body of the woman lying in shackles. Her whole body was bruised, cut deeply and burnt. She was clothed with wounds and had nothing to cover her naked body.“No, she is not dead, but I can assure you, death is the only prayer she offers to her god, as it would save her from the intense torture that never ends. It has been years now.”I stepped closer and squatted in front of her. As if my presence gave a bit of strength, I saw her eyelids flutter and her numb fingers budge.“You deserve this and even more for what you did to my innocent mother. All the evil you and your people have committed must be accounted for!” I seethed at her and watched as her eyes opened slowly, those eyes all dead.I couldn’t tell if she could see me clearly because her eyes were red and drooling.“Your son and husband will join you soon. That is t
Diane’s POVJust as I prayed for, they didn’t go further in the torture after my fight challenge with Zena was stamped. The satisfaction in their eyes said it all. How they really can’t wait for that day when they will see me get beaten up and killed at last.“You can go back to your room. The uniform will be sent to you tomorrow, and you can start school. Join any class of your choice and do as much training as you can in the five days you have.” The king said it with finality, and I only nodded, my mouth heavy to open and say anything. All my life I have depended on luck to survive. Every time I faced death or a dangerous threat, luck pulled up for me, and somehow, I would end up escaping and being the winner.Five days from now, I will be needing the greatest luck of my life because Zena needed nothing else but my headless body. She would do everything possible not to lose this opportunity to put an end to me. Jealousy had eaten deep inside her. She had seen me as a threat from the
