The eyes moved.

They came steady through the black space between the trees, unhurried, and the branches parted around whatever carried them without so much as a rustle, as though the forest itself understood better than to get in the way. Aurora's pulse hammered against her throat, some old animal instinct screaming at her to run even as her feet refused to obey it, rooted to the stone stairs like the pressure itself had nailed her boots in place. Beside her, she could hear Selene's breathing gone shallow and fast, and behind them both, the collective silence of five hundred kneeling wolves pressed down harder than the strange weight in the air ever could have on its own.

"Someone answer me," Kael said, louder this time, though his voice had lost every ounce of its usual command. "Who is that?"

Nobody moved to answer him. Nobody could. The pressure bearing down on the clearing had pinned five hundred wolves to their knees, and Aurora, still upright only because some stubborn part of her refused to bend, watched a shape finally step free of the tree line into the moonlight.

Tall enough that the lower branches seemed to bend out of his way on instinct. Dressed in white so pale it looked carved from bone, an unsettling contrast against the black night behind him. His hair was black. His eyes, when they finally found hers across the clearing, were a silver so bright they looked lit from within, and they did not waver. Aurora had never seen anyone move through fear the way he moved through it now, like the terror rippling through the clearing was simply weather he'd long ago stopped noticing.

Someone in the crowd breathed his name like a prayer and a curse spoken together in the same trembling breath, barely more than a whisper, and yet it seemed to carry across the entire clearing anyway.

"Alpha Darius."

The name rippled backward through the gathered pack, wolf to wolf, faster than any voice could have carried it alone, until even the youngest pups among the onlookers had gone rigid with recognition. The Alpha King's eldest son. The Ruthless Wolf. The one whose wolf Draven had a body count no pack dared speak of in daylight. Aurora had heard the stories as a girl, whispered around fires by elders who claimed his wolf could level a battlefield without breaking stride, claimed he had once ended a border war in a single night simply by walking onto the field alone. She had never quite believed the stories were literal until this exact moment, watching Kael's own guard, men who had trained her, men who had never once flinched in a skirmish, tremble at the mere sight of him crossing the clearing toward her.

Kael found his voice first, though it came out thinner than he probably intended. "Brother. This is a private ceremony. You have no business here."

Darius didn't look at him. He kept walking, unhurried, each step deliberate, until he was close enough that Aurora could feel the heat radiating off him despite the cold night air, close enough that she could see the muscle working in his jaw, the only sign that any of this cost him something to hold as steady as he did.

"I felt a bond break," he said.

Nothing else. No explanation at all. He let the silence after it do the rest of the work, and the whole clearing seemed to hold its breath waiting for him to finish a sentence he had no intention of ever finishing.

Kael's jaw tightened visibly. "That's not your concern, brother, and it never will be."

Darius didn't answer. He reached Aurora and stopped, close enough now that she had to tilt her head back to hold his gaze, and every instinct in her body screamed at her to look away, to submit, to run. She didn't do any of it. She held still instead, chin lifted despite everything, because if this stranger was about to become one more person deciding her fate tonight, she refused to do it while looking at the ground. Up close he was even larger than he'd seemed crossing the clearing, the kind of presence that seemed to bend the very air around it, and yet when his fingers finally found her chin, they moved with a gentleness that made no sense given everything else about him standing there.

He lifted her chin with two fingers. Gentle. Entirely at odds with the aura still pressing down over the clearing like a storm about to break.

Warmth flooded into the hollow place the broken bond had left behind, so fast and so complete that her legs nearly buckled for an entirely different reason than before. It felt nothing like the frantic, desperate warmth of the bond she'd lost minutes ago at the altar. This was steadier, deeper, something that settled into her chest like it had always belonged there and was simply arriving late to claim its place.

Mine, Lyra whispered, and it was the first thing she had said since the bond tore. He found us.

Kael's eyes moved between them, and understanding hit him a beat before he wanted it to. His face drained of color, every trace of the composed Alpha who had rejected her minutes ago gone, replaced by something closer to a man watching his own mistake grow teeth in front of him.

"Brother." The word came out smaller than anything Kael had said all night, all the earlier bravado drained clean out of it.

Darius didn't look away from Aurora. His wolf was close to the surface, she could see it in the way his eyes flared brighter, in the low sound building in his chest that wasn't quite human.

"Explain yourself," Kael said, voice cracking under the effort of sounding commanding. "You have no claim here. This is my pack, my ceremony, my territory, and you walked into it uninvited like you own every square inch of ground you set foot on."

"I don't need one." Darius's gaze finally left Aurora's face, sliding to his brother with something cold and final behind it. "You rejected her. That severed whatever claim you had. What's left is between her, me, and the Moon Goddess, and none of those three answer to you."

"This is insanity. You met her thirty seconds ago."

"Long enough," Darius said, and nothing more.

"Long enough for what? For your wolf to react to a stranger and you to mistake instinct for destiny?" Kael's voice climbed, desperation bleeding through the anger now, his composure cracking further with every word. "You don't know the first thing about her. You don't know what she likes, what she fears, who she is when no one's watching. You're building a claim on a feeling, and feelings aren't a foundation for anything lasting."

"I know she deserved better than what you gave her tonight. That's enough for now, and it's more than you managed to figure out in three long years standing beside her."

"This changes nothing about the alliance," Selene said, still pale from the shock of his arrival, finding her voice before Kael could push further. "Whatever this is, it doesn't undo the ceremony that already happened here tonight."

"It undoes everything you think it doesn't." Darius's voice hadn't risen once, not even a fraction, and somehow that made it worse, more final, the calm of a man who had already decided how this would end before he ever stepped out of the trees. His eyes flicked to Selene for the first time, brief and dismissive, like she was a detail hardly worth his attention. "Since my brother rejected what belongs to the Moon Goddess, I'll claim her instead."

The words landed like a verdict, echoing across the frozen clearing loud enough to reach the very back of the crowd, loud enough to travel with every witness back to their own territories by morning, whispered in kitchens and war rooms alike until the story outgrew the truth of it entirely. Aurora felt the weight of it settle over her shoulders like a second skin she hadn't asked for, terrifying and, somewhere beneath the terror, strangely steadying.

Kael made a strangled sound, lunging forward on pure instinct, only to be stopped by his own guard's frozen hesitation, none of them willing to put a hand on the Alpha King's son even to save their own Alpha's pride.

"You can't," Kael said, though the words came out more plea than command now. "You can't just take her. Not like this, not in front of everyone, not without giving any of us a chance to understand what's actually happening here tonight."

Darius turned his head, silver eyes flaring brighter still, Draven pressing close enough to the surface that his voice came out layered with something ancient and enormous underneath it, a growl woven through every single syllable.

"Watch me."

"Close ranks," Darius said quietly, and the guards flanking them shifted formation without a word of question, moving as one body around a man they clearly obeyed on instinct rather than orders.Aurora had spent her whole life inside a single pack's walls, and had thought Moonfang's warriors were impressive in their discipline. Watching Darius's men move now, she understood for the first time how small her whole frame of reference had actually been. The road climbed steadily as they went, and when the trees finally broke open onto open hills, Aurora stopped walking entirely, breath catching in her throat.Kingswood rose out of the mountainside itself, not built beside it but carved into it, towers scraping clouds that had gathered low and heavy over the peaks. Torches lined walls too high to climb and too old to have been built by anyone still living, and even from this distance she could see guards posted at intervals that suggested a fortress prepared for war rather than a simple

"He humiliated me."Selene's voice cracked through her private chambers, sharp enough that the two advisors seated across from her flinched in unison. She hadn't bothered changing out of the frost colored gown from the ceremony, hadn't bothered doing anything except pace the length of the room since the moment Darius Blackwood walked out of that clearing with a prize that was supposed to have made her the most envied woman in three territories. Every step she took across the stone floor felt like it was grinding down another layer of the composure she'd spent years perfecting, until she wasn't entirely certain how much of it remained."My lady, the situation is unusual, but hardly a reflection on you personally.""Everyone in that clearing watched me get overshadowed by a rejected nobody in front of every witness that mattered." Selene rounded on the advisor, a thin, nervous man named Osric who had served Moonfang's council for longer than she'd been alive. "That is entirely a r

"You're really leaving tonight."Elder Bram's voice rasped from the narrow bed where he'd spent the better part of a year now, his body failing faster than any healer's remedy could slow. Aurora knelt beside him, one hand wrapped around his frail fingers, the small satchel she'd packed already slung over her shoulder."I don't have much choice," she said quietly. "It isn't safe for me here anymore, not after tonight.""It was never as safe as any of us pretended it was," he said. He coughed, a wet, rattling sound that made her chest ache to hear. "Your mother used to say the same thing. Right before she stopped saying much of anything at all."Aurora went still. "You knew my mother?" "Better than most. She trusted very few people in this pack, and for good reason, as it turned out." His eyes, milky with age but still sharp underneath it, found hers in the dim candlelight. "She trusted me enough to tell me things she never told anyone else. Things I promised to carry to my grave

"Stand down." Kael's voice shook with the effort of forcing command back into it, every syllable trembling at the edges despite how hard he was clearly fighting to sound certain. "Release her, or so help me, brother or not, I will call every warrior in this pack against you.""You could try," Darius said, and something in the flatness of it made the threat sound almost bored. The two brothers faced each other across the frozen clearing, and Aurora, still caught in the circle of Darius's arm, felt the tension between them settle over the crowd like a second, heavier weight than the one that had already dropped everyone to their knees. No one moved to enforce Kael's threat. No one dared. She could feel the eyes of every warrior in the clearing calculating odds none of them liked, weighing loyalty to their Alpha against the very real possibility that answering his call meant walking straight into something none of them would walk back out of."You have no authority here at all," Ka

"I, Alpha Kael Blackwood, reject you, Aurora Ashwood, as my mate."The words hit her like a fist to the ribs.Aurora's knees locked. For one absurd second she thought she had misheard him, that the wind off the training fields had twisted his voice into something cruel. Then she saw his face. Calm. Certain. Not even the decency to look ashamed. Three years of quiet promises, of late nights spent planning a future together, and he stood there delivering her destruction with the same composed expression he used for approving trade agreements.Around them, the entire Moonfang Pack stood frozen under the rising moon, hundreds of eyes swinging from their Alpha to the woman he had just humiliated in front of every soul who mattered. The Mate Ceremony altar, draped in silver cloth and moonflowers she had helped weave herself that morning, suddenly felt like a stage built for her execution."Kael." Her voice cracked on his name, and she hated herself for it. "Why?""Selene will stand besid
