"Stand down." Kael's voice shook with the effort of forcing command back into it, every syllable trembling at the edges despite how hard he was clearly fighting to sound certain. "Release her, or so help me, brother or not, I will call every warrior in this pack against you."

"You could try," Darius said, and something in the flatness of it made the threat sound almost bored.

The two brothers faced each other across the frozen clearing, and Aurora, still caught in the circle of Darius's arm, felt the tension between them settle over the crowd like a second, heavier weight than the one that had already dropped everyone to their knees. No one moved to enforce Kael's threat. No one dared. She could feel the eyes of every warrior in the clearing calculating odds none of them liked, weighing loyalty to their Alpha against the very real possibility that answering his call meant walking straight into something none of them would walk back out of.

"You have no authority here at all," Kael said. "This is Moonfang territory. My territory, ruled by me, since before you decided to walk into it uninvited tonight."

"And I am the Alpha King's eldest son, heir to the crown that every territory in this kingdom, including yours, ultimately answers to." Darius's tone hadn't changed, hadn't risen, and that steadiness made the words land harder than shouting ever could have. "My rank outranks yours by royal blood, Kael. It always has. You've simply never had reason to test it before tonight, because until now I had no reason to remind you of it."

Kael's jaw worked, fury and humiliation warring openly on his face now that the shock of Darius's arrival had worn thin enough to let something rawer show through. "This is about more than rank and you know it perfectly well," Kael said.

"You're right. It's about the fact that you stood on that altar and rejected a woman who gave you three years of loyalty, in front of the entire pack, without so much as an explanation she deserved to hear. You made her stand there and take it, in front of everyone she's ever loved, and called it law."

"That's between her and me," Kael said, low and tight.

"It was. The moment you rejected her, it stopped being anyone's business but hers, and now mine." Darius's gaze flicked briefly to Selene, still pale and silent at the edge of the platform, before returning to Kael. "You made your choice tonight. I'm making mine."

Selene finally found her voice, sharp and brittle beneath the composure she was clearly fighting to hold onto. "This is absurd. You can't simply override a pack's ceremony because your wolf had a reaction to a stranger standing on an altar he had no part in building."

"I'm not overriding anything. Your ceremony already ended the moment he said the words. That's not my doing, that's the law you were both so eager to hide behind a few minutes ago." Darius didn't bother looking at her when he answered. "What happens next isn't yours to weigh in on."

"It affects the alliance between our territories, an alliance months in the making."

"Then perhaps you should have considered that before helping engineer a rejection built on nothing but ambition dressed up as strategy." Something colder slid into Darius's voice for the first time since he'd stepped out of the trees that night, and Selene's composure cracked visibly under it, just for a second, before she smoothed it back into place with visible effort.

Kael took a step forward, hands curling into fists at his sides, every part of him rigid with the effort of not shifting outright in front of five hundred witnesses. "You don't know anything about why I made the choice I made."

"I know enough. I know a woman stood at that altar for three years believing she'd earn a place beside you, and I know you decided a stranger's political weight mattered more than that loyalty. Whatever your reasons, they don't change what you did to her in front of everyone she's ever known."

"I did what was best for this pack," Kael said, though even he seemed to hear how thin it sounded now.

"You did what was easiest for your pride." Darius's arm tightened slightly around Aurora, not painfully, just enough to be felt, grounding rather than restraining. "That's not the same thing, and some part of you already knows it, or you wouldn't look half as sick as you do right now, standing there trying to convince yourself and everyone watching that this was ever about strategy."

The words landed like a blow, and Kael flinched despite clearly trying not to, the fight in his shoulders faltering for just a moment before pride dragged it back upright, his hands curling tighter at his sides until his knuckles went pale.

"You still can't just take her," Kael said, though the certainty had drained out of the threat entirely, leaving something closer to desperation in its place. "There are laws about claiming a rejected mate. Cooling periods. Witnesses to formally record it, procedures that exist for a reason."

"I'm aware of the laws. I intend to follow every one of them, starting with taking her somewhere safe tonight, since apparently her own pack couldn't manage that much on her behalf despite years of supposed loyalty in return."

"Safe from what?"

"From whatever made my father's border scouts report increased Hollow Fang movement near Moonfang territory over the past month, movement that happened to intensify right around the same time your engagement to Selene was finalized." Darius's eyes hadn't left his brother's face. "Draw your own conclusions about the timing. I already have mine, and I don't much like where they lead."

Silence rippled through the gathered pack at that, murmurs breaking out despite the earlier terror still pinning most of them in place. A few of the older warriors exchanged glances that suggested this wasn't news to everyone in the clearing, that whispers about the increased rogue activity had already been circulating in corners Kael apparently hadn't been listening to. Kael's eyes darted, briefly, unmistakably, toward Selene, and whatever he saw in her expression made something in his own face falter, some fresh doubt cracking through the anger.

"That's not relevant right now," Selene said quickly, too quickly, her voice climbing half a note higher than the moment called for, betraying more than she probably meant to.

"Isn't it?" Darius's gaze lingered on her a moment longer than necessary, weighing something, before he finally turned his attention fully back to Aurora, something almost gentle bleeding into his voice despite everything happening around them. "Pack what you need. We leave tonight."

Aurora blinked, the reality of it settling over her slower than everything else that had happened in the last quarter hour. "Tonight?"

"Tonight." His silver eyes held hers, steady in a way that felt like the first solid ground she'd stood on since Kael's rejection tore the world out from under her. "You're not safe here anymore, whether that's because of politics, because of whatever's stirring along the borders, or simply because staying under the same roof as the man who did this to you isn't something I'm willing to allow. Whichever reason matters most to you, we leave before the moon sets."

"You don't get to decide that for me either," Aurora said, some of her own fire returning despite the exhaustion pulling at her limbs, her voice steadier now than it had been since the moment Kael first spoke his rejection at the altar. "I've had enough of men deciding things about my life tonight."

Something that almost looked like respect flickered across Darius's face, gone as quickly as it had appeared. "Fair. Then I'm asking, not deciding. Will you come with me?"

She looked past him, once, at the pack she'd grown up in, at the faces that had watched her humiliation without a single voice raised in her defense, and felt the answer settle in her chest before she'd even finished thinking it all the way through, before her mind had fully caught up to what her instincts already understood.

"Yes."

Kael's voice cracked through the clearing one last time, raw and furious and, beneath it, unmistakably afraid. "You can't just decide her life for her."

Darius didn't look back at him.

"Watch me do exactly that," he said quietly, and turned Aurora gently toward the path leading out of the clearing, leaving his brother standing alone on an altar that had held nothing but broken promises since the moment the ceremony began. Behind them, Aurora could hear Selene's voice rising in argument with someone, sharp and controlled even in defeat, and beneath it, quieter, Kael saying nothing at all, the silence of a man watching everything he'd built collapse in the span of a single night.

She didn't look back either.

"Close ranks," Darius said quietly, and the guards flanking them shifted formation without a word of question, moving as one body around a man they clearly obeyed on instinct rather than orders.Aurora had spent her whole life inside a single pack's walls, and had thought Moonfang's warriors were impressive in their discipline. Watching Darius's men move now, she understood for the first time how small her whole frame of reference had actually been. The road climbed steadily as they went, and when the trees finally broke open onto open hills, Aurora stopped walking entirely, breath catching in her throat.Kingswood rose out of the mountainside itself, not built beside it but carved into it, towers scraping clouds that had gathered low and heavy over the peaks. Torches lined walls too high to climb and too old to have been built by anyone still living, and even from this distance she could see guards posted at intervals that suggested a fortress prepared for war rather than a simple

"He humiliated me."Selene's voice cracked through her private chambers, sharp enough that the two advisors seated across from her flinched in unison. She hadn't bothered changing out of the frost colored gown from the ceremony, hadn't bothered doing anything except pace the length of the room since the moment Darius Blackwood walked out of that clearing with a prize that was supposed to have made her the most envied woman in three territories. Every step she took across the stone floor felt like it was grinding down another layer of the composure she'd spent years perfecting, until she wasn't entirely certain how much of it remained."My lady, the situation is unusual, but hardly a reflection on you personally.""Everyone in that clearing watched me get overshadowed by a rejected nobody in front of every witness that mattered." Selene rounded on the advisor, a thin, nervous man named Osric who had served Moonfang's council for longer than she'd been alive. "That is entirely a r

"You're really leaving tonight."Elder Bram's voice rasped from the narrow bed where he'd spent the better part of a year now, his body failing faster than any healer's remedy could slow. Aurora knelt beside him, one hand wrapped around his frail fingers, the small satchel she'd packed already slung over her shoulder."I don't have much choice," she said quietly. "It isn't safe for me here anymore, not after tonight.""It was never as safe as any of us pretended it was," he said. He coughed, a wet, rattling sound that made her chest ache to hear. "Your mother used to say the same thing. Right before she stopped saying much of anything at all."Aurora went still. "You knew my mother?" "Better than most. She trusted very few people in this pack, and for good reason, as it turned out." His eyes, milky with age but still sharp underneath it, found hers in the dim candlelight. "She trusted me enough to tell me things she never told anyone else. Things I promised to carry to my grave

The eyes moved. They came steady through the black space between the trees, unhurried, and the branches parted around whatever carried them without so much as a rustle, as though the forest itself understood better than to get in the way. Aurora's pulse hammered against her throat, some old animal instinct screaming at her to run even as her feet refused to obey it, rooted to the stone stairs like the pressure itself had nailed her boots in place. Beside her, she could hear Selene's breathing gone shallow and fast, and behind them both, the collective silence of five hundred kneeling wolves pressed down harder than the strange weight in the air ever could have on its own."Someone answer me," Kael said, louder this time, though his voice had lost every ounce of its usual command. "Who is that?"Nobody moved to answer him. Nobody could. The pressure bearing down on the clearing had pinned five hundred wolves to their knees, and Aurora, still upright only because some stubborn part

"I, Alpha Kael Blackwood, reject you, Aurora Ashwood, as my mate."The words hit her like a fist to the ribs.Aurora's knees locked. For one absurd second she thought she had misheard him, that the wind off the training fields had twisted his voice into something cruel. Then she saw his face. Calm. Certain. Not even the decency to look ashamed. Three years of quiet promises, of late nights spent planning a future together, and he stood there delivering her destruction with the same composed expression he used for approving trade agreements.Around them, the entire Moonfang Pack stood frozen under the rising moon, hundreds of eyes swinging from their Alpha to the woman he had just humiliated in front of every soul who mattered. The Mate Ceremony altar, draped in silver cloth and moonflowers she had helped weave herself that morning, suddenly felt like a stage built for her execution."Kael." Her voice cracked on his name, and she hated herself for it. "Why?""Selene will stand besid
