"I, Alpha Kael Blackwood, reject you, Aurora Ashwood, as my mate."

The words hit her like a fist to the ribs.

Aurora's knees locked. For one absurd second she thought she had misheard him, that the wind off the training fields had twisted his voice into something cruel. Then she saw his face. Calm. Certain. Not even the decency to look ashamed. Three years of quiet promises, of late nights spent planning a future together, and he stood there delivering her destruction with the same composed expression he used for approving trade agreements.

Around them, the entire Moonfang Pack stood frozen under the rising moon, hundreds of eyes swinging from their Alpha to the woman he had just humiliated in front of every soul who mattered. The Mate Ceremony altar, draped in silver cloth and moonflowers she had helped weave herself that morning, suddenly felt like a stage built for her execution.

"Kael." Her voice cracked on his name, and she hated herself for it. "Why?"

"Selene will stand beside me as Luna."

That was all he gave her. No apology. No explanation for three years of promises undone in a single sentence, as if she didn't deserve even the courtesy of a reason. She waited, some small foolish part of her still expecting him to soften, to reach for her hand the way he used to when they were younger and the world felt smaller and kinder than it did tonight. He didn't move.

Somewhere behind her, a woman laughed. Soft. Satisfied.

Aurora turned enough to see Selene standing at the edge of the platform in a gown the color of frost, platinum hair catching the moonlight like something deliberately staged. She wasn't even trying to hide her smile.

"You knew," Aurora said, and it wasn't really a question at all, more an accusation she already knew the answer to.

"Did you really think you were his equal, sweetheart?"

"I think I spent three years believing him when he said I was his equal in every way that mattered."

"That's the trouble with belief," Selene said, her voice honey smooth. "It doesn't ask for proof before it breaks your heart." Selene stepped closer, close enough that Aurora could smell the expensive oil in her hair, could see the careful way every strand had been arranged for this exact moment. "You should be thanking me, honestly. I've saved you a lifetime of being quietly beneath him."

"Get away from me," Aurora said, low and shaking, every word costing her something.

"There's the fire everyone talks about," Selene said, her smile widening, cold and pleased. "I can see why he kept you around as long as he did. Pity fire alone was never going to be enough."

The crowd was silent, but it was the kind of silence that had teeth. Aurora had grown up in this pack. She'd trained beside these wolves, patched their wounds, sat with their elders, waited three years for the night she would finally be named Luna. She searched the faces around her for even one that looked outraged on her behalf, and found only pity, or worse, the blank, careful neutrality of people who did not want to be next.

She recognized most of them by name. The healer she'd apprenticed under for two winters, standing near the back with her hands folded tight. A boy she'd carried on her hip when he was small enough to fit there, now old enough to look away rather than meet her eyes. An old friend from her training years who had once sworn, half joking, that she'd fight anyone who ever hurt Aurora, standing perfectly still now with her eyes fixed on the grass. Every face a small, individual betrayal, and together they formed something far larger than any single one of them could have managed alone.

"Three years, Kael." Her hands were shaking. She pressed them flat against her thighs to stop it. "You couldn't tell me this in private?"

"A rejection has to be witnessed. You know the law."

"Don't hide behind law. You wanted them to see me broken."

"That's not what this is."

"Isn't it?" Her voice rose despite herself, cracking at the edges. "You could have ended this a hundred different ways that didn't require an audience. You chose this one. That was a choice, Kael, not the law forcing your hand."

Kael didn't answer that. He didn't have to. The truth was already sitting plainly on his face, and it was somehow worse than if he'd simply said yes.

The mate bond severed itself in that moment, a physical thing, a rope snapping deep in her chest. Aurora gasped and folded forward, one hand catching the altar's edge to keep herself upright. Pain radiated from her sternum outward, hot and enormous, and for a few seconds the whole world narrowed down to the effort of not screaming in front of five hundred witnesses. She had heard rejected wolves describe the pain before, in careful, clinical terms, as though describing it any other way might make it real. None of those descriptions had prepared her for how much it felt like dying without the mercy of actually dying.

Inside her, Lyra whimpered and went still, curling in on herself like something that had just been struck.

"Get her off the altar," Kael said, to no one in particular. "This is meant to be a celebration."

That did it. Something in Aurora's chest, already torn open, turned to iron.

"A celebration." She straightened despite the pain, despite her vision swimming at the edges. "You just rejected me in front of my entire pack, and you're worried about ruining the mood."

"Aurora."

"Don't." She stepped back from him, off the altar, her boots finding the stone stairs on instinct because her eyes refused to leave his face. "I hope Selene is worth it."

Somewhere in the crowd, someone shifted their weight, and the sound of it, small and ordinary, was almost louder than anything else that had happened tonight. Aurora realized, with a clarity that felt like its own kind of wound, that no one was going to stop this. No one was going to step forward and say her name the way it deserved to be said. She was simply going to walk down these stairs alone, in front of everyone she had ever loved, and that was going to be the story they told about tonight for years to come.

She turned to walk away. She would not run. She had promised herself that much, standing there with her whole future collapsing around her ears, that she would leave this altar with her spine straight even if it killed her.

She made it exactly four steps.

The air changed first. A pressure dropped over the clearing like a hand closing around it, and every conversation, every whisper, every breath in the crowd cut off at once. Aurora felt it hit her skin before she understood what it was, a weight so absolute that Lyra lifted her head inside her chest, suddenly, violently alert. The moonflowers on the altar trembled though there was no wind to move them. Somewhere further off, an owl broke from the treetops in a panic, wings beating hard enough to carry across the whole clearing before the sound cut off entirely, swallowed by whatever was pressing down over them.

Around her, wolves who had spent their whole lives as hardened warriors dropped to their knees in the grass. Kael's guard, six men who feared nothing, staggered as if struck. Even Kael himself went rigid at the altar, his hand flying instinctively toward the blade at his hip before some deeper survival instinct told him not to bother.

Selene's smug composure vanished entirely. Her face went white.

"That's not possible," she whispered. "Not here."

Aurora turned, chest still aching from the severed bond, searching the tree line for whatever had brought five hundred wolves to their knees without lifting a single hand. Her own legs felt unsteady beneath her, caught somewhere between the grief of the broken bond and the primal terror now flooding the clearing from every direction at once.

Branches groaned somewhere in the dark, bending inward as though something enormous were passing beneath them without any care for the trees in its path. The moon overhead seemed to dim, swallowed by a pressure that had no visible source, no shape yet, nothing but the certainty, bone deep and undeniable, that whatever was coming had never once in its life needed permission to arrive anywhere it chose to go.

Kael's voice broke the silence, thin and stripped of every ounce of command it usually carried.

"Who's out there?"

Nobody answered him. The pressure only grew heavier, closer, pressing down like a hand closing slowly into a fist, and somewhere in the black space between the trees, two things caught the moonlight and held it.

Eyes.

"Close ranks," Darius said quietly, and the guards flanking them shifted formation without a word of question, moving as one body around a man they clearly obeyed on instinct rather than orders.Aurora had spent her whole life inside a single pack's walls, and had thought Moonfang's warriors were impressive in their discipline. Watching Darius's men move now, she understood for the first time how small her whole frame of reference had actually been. The road climbed steadily as they went, and when the trees finally broke open onto open hills, Aurora stopped walking entirely, breath catching in her throat.Kingswood rose out of the mountainside itself, not built beside it but carved into it, towers scraping clouds that had gathered low and heavy over the peaks. Torches lined walls too high to climb and too old to have been built by anyone still living, and even from this distance she could see guards posted at intervals that suggested a fortress prepared for war rather than a simple

"He humiliated me."Selene's voice cracked through her private chambers, sharp enough that the two advisors seated across from her flinched in unison. She hadn't bothered changing out of the frost colored gown from the ceremony, hadn't bothered doing anything except pace the length of the room since the moment Darius Blackwood walked out of that clearing with a prize that was supposed to have made her the most envied woman in three territories. Every step she took across the stone floor felt like it was grinding down another layer of the composure she'd spent years perfecting, until she wasn't entirely certain how much of it remained."My lady, the situation is unusual, but hardly a reflection on you personally.""Everyone in that clearing watched me get overshadowed by a rejected nobody in front of every witness that mattered." Selene rounded on the advisor, a thin, nervous man named Osric who had served Moonfang's council for longer than she'd been alive. "That is entirely a r

"You're really leaving tonight."Elder Bram's voice rasped from the narrow bed where he'd spent the better part of a year now, his body failing faster than any healer's remedy could slow. Aurora knelt beside him, one hand wrapped around his frail fingers, the small satchel she'd packed already slung over her shoulder."I don't have much choice," she said quietly. "It isn't safe for me here anymore, not after tonight.""It was never as safe as any of us pretended it was," he said. He coughed, a wet, rattling sound that made her chest ache to hear. "Your mother used to say the same thing. Right before she stopped saying much of anything at all."Aurora went still. "You knew my mother?" "Better than most. She trusted very few people in this pack, and for good reason, as it turned out." His eyes, milky with age but still sharp underneath it, found hers in the dim candlelight. "She trusted me enough to tell me things she never told anyone else. Things I promised to carry to my grave

"Stand down." Kael's voice shook with the effort of forcing command back into it, every syllable trembling at the edges despite how hard he was clearly fighting to sound certain. "Release her, or so help me, brother or not, I will call every warrior in this pack against you.""You could try," Darius said, and something in the flatness of it made the threat sound almost bored. The two brothers faced each other across the frozen clearing, and Aurora, still caught in the circle of Darius's arm, felt the tension between them settle over the crowd like a second, heavier weight than the one that had already dropped everyone to their knees. No one moved to enforce Kael's threat. No one dared. She could feel the eyes of every warrior in the clearing calculating odds none of them liked, weighing loyalty to their Alpha against the very real possibility that answering his call meant walking straight into something none of them would walk back out of."You have no authority here at all," Ka

The eyes moved. They came steady through the black space between the trees, unhurried, and the branches parted around whatever carried them without so much as a rustle, as though the forest itself understood better than to get in the way. Aurora's pulse hammered against her throat, some old animal instinct screaming at her to run even as her feet refused to obey it, rooted to the stone stairs like the pressure itself had nailed her boots in place. Beside her, she could hear Selene's breathing gone shallow and fast, and behind them both, the collective silence of five hundred kneeling wolves pressed down harder than the strange weight in the air ever could have on its own."Someone answer me," Kael said, louder this time, though his voice had lost every ounce of its usual command. "Who is that?"Nobody moved to answer him. Nobody could. The pressure bearing down on the clearing had pinned five hundred wolves to their knees, and Aurora, still upright only because some stubborn part
