Elara's POV

The hooded figure disappeared into the tree line before anyone in the courtyard could give chase. For a few long, chaotic seconds, nobody seemed to know whether to pursue him or tend to Bram.

He had gone down hard against the stone, blood soaking fast through the shoulder of his leathers.

"Someone get Nyra," Kael shouted, still gripping my arm. He positioned himself between me and the scattering riders even as his eyes tracked every movement in the courtyard for a second attack.

"Soren, get the gates secured. Nobody leaves until we understand what just happened."

Soren was already moving, barking orders at the guards.

Within moments the courtyard shifted from chaos into something more controlled, the riders were held at the edges under careful watch.

Bram was carried inside by two of his own men. Nyra arrived fast enough that her healer's satchel was already open before she reached him.

"He'll live," Nyra said after a tense few minutes of work. She pressed a cloth hard against the wound while Bram gritted his teeth against the pain. "The blade missed anything vital.

Whoever threw it either had poor aim or wasn't actually trying to kill him."

"Wasn't trying to kill me," Bram said through clenched teeth. "I think he was trying to send a message. That's not one of my men, and I don't recognize him at all."

Kael crouched beside him, his expression grim. "Then who does he answer to?"

"I don't know," Bram admitted. "But if I had to guess, I'd say someone who doesn't want the Frostpine Alliance actually negotiating with you.

Someone who'd rather see this end in blood than in a conversation that might convince six packs there's nothing to fear from Nightfall Hollow after all."

The implication settled cold in my chest. If that was true, it meant someone out there wanted conflict badly enough to attack their own ally rather than risk peace taking hold.

That kind of determination frightened me more than an open declaration of war ever could have.

"We need to find him," I said. "Before he reaches whoever sent him."

"Guards are already searching the tree line," Soren said, jogging back over and slightly out of breath. "Though I wouldn't count on catching him.

Whoever planned this had an escape route ready. That's not the work of someone acting alone or on impulse."

Kael stood and ran a hand through his hair. The careful composure he usually wore was fraying visibly at the edges.

"This isn't Mathis, he's confined to the east wing under guard, and this required outside coordination he wouldn't have had access to since his removal from the council."

"No," Nyra agreed, still working on Bram's shoulder. "But it may well be connected to whoever he was corresponding with beyond these walls.

Vesna warned us his reach extended further than this court, and Ryker confirmed contact with Ashwood pack. If Mathis built other alliances during his years of influence, alliances we haven't uncovered yet, this could be one of them acting independently now that he's no longer able to direct things himself."

The thought of Mathis's influence extending even further than we'd already discovered made the ground beneath the wedding planning and quiet garden evenings feel considerably less solid than it had that morning.

Invisible threads reaching into packs and alliances none of us had thought to examine yet.

Bram was pale but steadying under Nyra's care. He looked up at Kael with something more sober in his expression than the wary formality he'd arrived with.

"For what it's worth, King Draven, this changes things. Whoever attacked me wanted the alliance to see negotiation as a betrayal worth punishing.

That tells me more about who actually fears you than any polite conversation would have."

"Does that mean the alliance is willing to talk properly now?" Kael asked.

"It means I'm willing to recommend it," Bram said carefully. "The others will need convincing. Fear doesn't disappear just because one attack failed.

If anything, some of them will see this as proof that danger follows wherever your name is spoken.

" He glanced toward me, something considering in his gaze.

"Though I'll admit, what she said before the chaos started stayed with me.

An alliance built on genuine trust is worth pursuing. I'll carry that argument back with me, for whatever it's worth."

"It's worth quite a lot," I said. "Thank you, Bram. I'm sorry this happened to you in our courtyard."

"Not your doing," he said, wincing as Nyra tightened the bandage.

"Someone wanted this outcome badly enough to risk one of their own allies bleeding out to get it. That tells its own story."

Once Bram and his remaining riders had been settled for the night under careful watch, and the courtyard had finally quieted from the earlier chaos, Kael found me in the library.

I was staring at the fire rather than any of the books scattered across the table, my mind still turning over the sight of that blade flying across the courtyard.

"You're shaking," he said softly, sitting beside me and pulling me gently against his side.

"I keep thinking about how close that blade came to hitting one of us instead," I admitted. "If the aim had been different. If it had been meant for you, or for me, instead of a warning to Bram."

"I know." Kael's arms tightened around me. I could feel the same fear running underneath his calm exterior, carefully controlled but present all the same. "I won't pretend today didn't frighten me too.

But we handled it. Bram's alive, and despite everything, he's leaving here more inclined toward peace than he arrived.

Thanks in large part to you."

"It doesn't feel like enough," I said. "Not when someone out there is willing to hurt their own allies just to keep the fear alive."

"No," Kael agreed quietly. "It doesn't feel like enough, But it's a start.

Starts are all any of us really have to work with, one difficult day at a time." He pressed a kiss to my temple, steady and grounding. "We'll find out who sent that blade, Elara.

And whoever it is, they'll learn soon enough that frightening us into conflict is going to take considerably more than one failed attack in a courtyard."

Elara's POVThe letter sat unopened on the table for a long moment, all of us simply staring at it like it might change shape if we looked away, and I found myself reaching for it slowly, my hands not quite steady as I finally broke the unfamiliar seal, pressed with an emblem I didn't recognize, a sun rising over waves."Read it aloud," Kael said quietly, his hand finding the small of my back, steady and grounding.I cleared my throat and began, the formal, careful language of the letter settling strange and heavy into the quiet library.*To Elara Ashwood, now Elara Draven, Queen of Nightfall Hollow. Word has reached our shores of the curse broken within your husband's bloodline, and of the manner in which it was achieved. This news, combined with certain details regarding your origins that have recently come to our attention, compels us to ask directly what we have wondered for over two decades. Are you the daughter of Marielle Sunhaven, who vanished from our kingdom before her arran

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 50

Elara's POVWe stayed in Ashwood territory for three more days, longer than I'd originally planned, though something about sitting with Alpha Cross through his slow decline felt important in a way I hadn't expected when Ryker's letter first arrived, less about him and more about giving myself the chance to close a door properly instead of leaving it hanging open the rest of my life."Do you think he'll recover," Kael asked quietly, the evening before we planned to return to Nightfall Hollow, both of us sitting on the small balcony outside the guest room the pack had prepared for us."I don't know," I admitted. "Nyra said guilt like that doesn't always resolve simply because someone finally speaks it aloud. Sometimes the body's already too worn down by the years of carrying it silently.""How do you feel about that possibility?"I considered the question honestly, turning it over before answering. "Strange. I thought I'd feel some kind of satisfaction, watching him face consequences af

Elara's POVI opened Ryker's letter in the quiet of the library, Kael reading through yet another diplomatic request beside me, and something in the careful, uneven handwriting told me before I'd even finished the first line that this wasn't simply another update on his father's cooperation with the northern packs."My father is dying. Not from illness, not from any attack, but from something the healers here can't explain, a weakness that's settled into him since the night he finally told the northern packs everything he knew. They say it looks like the wolf itself is losing its hold on him, faster than old age alone should account for. I don't know what this means, or whether it connects to anything you and Nyra might understand better than our own pack healers do, but I didn't know who else to ask.I read it twice, my stomach tightening with an unexpected complexity of feeling, because whatever cruelty Alpha Cross had shown me, whatever fear and ambition had driven decades of watc

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 48

Elara's POVWord of the curse breaking spread through Nightfall Hollow before the sun had even fully risen, servants and guards alike unable to contain their disbelief and joy once Nyra confirmed what she'd witnessed, and by midmorning, the castle had transformed into something I'd never quite seen before, genuine, unrestrained celebration replacing the careful, watchful tension that had lived in these halls for as long as I'd known them."A hundred years," Soren kept repeating throughout the morning, shaking his head like he still couldn't quite believe it himself, pulling Kael into a rough embrace that had nothing formal or careful about it at all. "A hundred years, and it took one omega from a small pack barely six months to undo what every healer and scholar in three kingdoms couldn't manage in a century.""She's not just an omega," Kael said, though there was no correction in his tone, only warmth, and pride, and something achingly soft as he looked at me across the room. "She's

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 47

Elara's POVNyra found me in the library on a bright, unremarkable afternoon, several weeks after Selene's sentencing had finally closed that long chapter of fear, and the careful, thoughtful expression on her face told me immediately that whatever she'd come to discuss carried real weight, even if the danger behind it had nothing to do with old enemies or ancient conspiracies."I want to examine the mark again," she said, settling into the chair across from mine. "Properly, now that things have quieted enough to actually study it without the pressure of an active threat clouding every observation. I've been curious for weeks whether the bond has changed since the wedding, now that the vows are fully sealed."I held out my wrist without hesitation, watching her turn it carefully in the afternoon light, tracing the familiar crescent moon and thorns with the same careful attention she'd shown that very first night in the cottage, though her expression this time carried curiosity rather

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 46

Elara's POVThe ride back to Nightfall Hollow felt entirely different from the tense journey north, the guards moving with visible relief despite the exhaustion carved into every face, Selene and her remaining followers bound and escorted at the center of our group, and though the danger that had shadowed us for weeks finally felt like it was loosening its grip, I found myself watching her carefully throughout the ride, unable to fully trust the quiet resignation she'd shown in the ruin."You keep looking back at her," Kael observed quietly, riding close beside me as the first real light of morning spread gold across the frosted fields."I keep waiting for it to feel finished," I admitted. "We caught her. She surrendered. And yet something in my chest still feels like it's bracing for one more thing to go wrong.""That's fair," he said. "We've been bracing for months. It doesn't simply stop because the danger has passed. Give it time, Elara. I imagine it'll take both of us a while to
