Evelyn

I did not stop running until the house was several streets behind me. My side pulled with every hurried step, the healing incision protesting the sudden strain, but the need to put distance between myself and that living room was stronger than the discomfort.

The residential streets eventually gave way to a quieter, less maintained stretch near the edge of the neighborhood. Streetlights were fewer here. I didn’t realize how far away from the house I was already.

I slowed, one arm wrapped

DorisI sat down. Everything hurt. My lip was split. My shoulder throbbed. There was a scratch along my collarbone that itched me. Margaret remained standing for a moment before returning to her chair. I looked toward the ICU doors. “How bad is he?” She cleared her throat. “He arrived unconscious.” My stomach tightened. “They had to intubate him. There is bleeding in his head and damage to his chest. The doctors are still working.” I swallowed. “Will he survive?” Margaret looked down at her hands. “They keep using the word critical because they do not know yet.” She paused. “They won't tell me whether he will wake up.” I sat back. For the first time since I had arrived, there was no anger left in me. Only fear. “Can I see him?” “Not yet.” She glanced at my face. “You should clean yourself up.” “I

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    What He Was Assigned

EvelynThe side of my face was still burning when Kendall got me into the car. She slammed my door shut, walked around to the driver's side and got in so quickly that I barely had time to fasten my seat belt before she started the engine. For the first few minutes, neither of us spoke. I kept looking back through the window at the hospital until the building disappeared behind us. Then Kendall hit the steering wheel with the heel of her hand. “She slapped you.” I swallowed. “I know.” “She actually slapped you.” “Kendall.” “She has some nerve.” “Kendall, please.” “No.” Her grip tightened around the steering wheel. “I wanted to turn around. I swear to God, I wanted to go back in there and… but you asked me to get you out.” She glanced at me, furious. “If we had stayed another thirty seconds, security would have dragged all of us out of that hospita

Doris“Evelyn, you being his wife is only on paper.”“Yes. On paper.” She didn’t make any attempt to argue with that which only irritated me the more.“You have been trying to get away from that piece of paper for months.”She stared at me.“You do not get to decide whether I should come in.”“I think I get to have something to say about it.”Kendall stepped between us.“You have said enough.” She said.I moved around her.“No. I have spent too long keeping my mouth shut.”Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.“You slept with my husband.”The accusation landed exactly where she intended it to.“I know what I did,” I said. “And oh, just how sweet and lovely it was having him go in and out of…”It seemed impossible but the sharp feel of pain that tinged my senses as my ears rang made it believable that Evelyn had slapped me.“Then stop pretending this is about loving him.”I felt my face burn as I chuckled while her vain friend held her back.“You do not know anything about me.”“I know you stayed be

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    The Confrontation

DorisAdrian’s parking space in the basement had been empty.I noticed it as soon as I turned into the row. His space was right where I expected it to be, concrete on three sides, an oil stain near the front tyre mark and the faded number painted on the wall behind it.He had only just taken his seat back, and normally he would have been upstairs before most of us, already moving through the office and making everyone aware that he was there.Instead, there was nothing.I sat in my car for a few seconds with both hands resting on the steering wheel. It was none of my business. That was what I told myself.Adrian had made that very clear the day before. In the meeting room near the lifts, he had looked straight at me and told me he did not love me. He had not even tried to soften it. He said he needed me because I knew how to handle certain clients, to flaunt my body to his prospective investors, and because, when he did not want to go home, having me around made things easier. Then he

EvelynKendall was still so into it. “The man looks like he has never lifted anything heavier than a file, and then suddenly he takes his shirt off and—” She waved a hand vaguely. “Shoulders. Arms. Stomach. The kind of body that makes you wonder why men bother wearing clothes at all.” “Kendall.” “You asked.” I was laughing louder now. “I did not ask for a medical examination.” “I am giving you a public service.” She shifted closer. “And he was so polite at first that I thought I had completely misread him. Then we got upstairs and discovered that Raymond has a personality.” “That sounds ominous.” “It was educational.” I laughed harder. She pointed at me. “Do not judge me. You were not exactly behaving responsibly last night either.” “I was not trying to be responsible.” “Exactly.” For a while, that was all we talked

  • Rejected By My Husband, Desired By My Doctor    Breakfast In Bed

EvelynI woke to sunlight across the sheets and the smell of coffee drifting into the room. For a few seconds, I had no idea where I was. Then I shifted beneath the covers, and the soreness between my thighs brought everything rushing back.I closed my eyes for a moment, not because I regretted any of it, but because remembering it this clearly this early in the morning made my face warm.Is this how my life is finally falling into place? The bedroom door opened.Damien walked in carrying a tray and, apparently, had no interest whatsoever in getting dressed before breakfast.I stared at him, up to down at his tailored frame, much of which was always hidden under his lab coat most of the time.He smiled.“Good morning.”“How did I get home?”“You were all sleep yesterday night so I just helped you all the way into the car and drove you back.” He crossed the room and set the tray carefully over my lap. “I thought it would be rude to disappear before you woke up.”There were two mugs of
