Chapter One

Cara'S POV

"You fucking bitch!" Mateo snarled, shoving me hard against the wooden counter. His eyes were afire, his lips twisted in a mean snarl.

"You're nothing but a fucking burden! If it weren't for you, we wouldn't be stuck in this goddamn mess!"

I gritted my teeth and said nothing. It wasn't new.

For months, ever since I came to Shadow wood pack, Mateo had been spewing this same bullshit. But today, his anger was worse. More venomous.

"Say something, bitch" he spat, grabbing my arm so hard I knew it would bruise. "Or are you gonna keep standing there like a fucking mute?"

Before I could respond, a loud crash echoed from outside.

We both turned toward the entrance just in time to see my uncle, his hands shaking, staring at a pile of fallen boxes. The truck that had whizzed past was now parked a few feet away, sending up clouds of dust.

And then, a man stepped out.

Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dangerous:

He’s the Alpha’s eldest son. Richard.

His face contorted in anger, he bullied his way toward my uncle, his hands reaching out to grab him by the collar, yanking him forward. "You dumb bastard!" he roared. "You don't have a single idea how much that shit costs?"

"I-I'm sorry," my uncle stammered, bowing in submission. "It was an accident-"

"An accident?" The man scoffed, shaking him. "Do I look like I give a fuck about your excuses?

I took a step forward. "Uncle-"

He gave a look

I know what that means…. Don’t….

I clenched my fists. After the previous alpha, Caleb's father, was defeated, my father went with him as his warrior to build the new pack, but my uncle.

He surrendered instead of following them. From a respected beta to nothing. Just a man running a cafeteria to make his living. And three months ago, I came to him, dragging my own load of problems with me.

So no, we couldn't afford trouble.

Then another car door opened.

And everything around me disappeared.

The pull hit me so hard it was like getting slammed in the chest.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw him. His eyes locked on mine, and I felt my soul wake up. It was like we were meant to be together. Our hearts beat as one, connected by a special bond.

Liam Wilson , Alpha's favorite son. We faced each other many times in battle before I was 18. But by the time I turned to an adult, something had changed with Cornell,my wolf. And Liam's never seen "Alec" in human form. He shouldn't recognize me as Alec, I thought

The moment he stepped out, my body went rigid. His presence was fucking suffocating-dark hair slightly tousled, sharp jawline, piercing eyes-a predator locked on its prey.

His whole aura screamed dominance, like the freaking world owed him something.

And, damn, his scent.

It wrapped around me like a noose, suffocating, intoxicating.

Mate.

I bit my tongue, forcing Cornell down. Not now. Not now.

Liam's eyes latched onto mine.

Did he feel it too? Or worse—did he recognize me?

Mateo murmured "This wasn't even our fault," he whispered, like a coward.

My uncle sighed heavily, turning to his son. "Enough,Mateo. Apologize."

Mateo bristled but complied, his tone oozing reluctance. Richard snorted, too, but he stepped back.

“Alpha doesn't like to wait, even if we are his sons” Richard said.

Liam didn't say a word. His eyes remained with mine, like weight and fire searing my skin alive. Then he finally turned to one of his men.

"Pay them," he said. "Let's go.

The car drove away. Everyone went back to what they were doing, except Mateo.

The moment we were alone, he spun on me, his face contorted in anger.

"This is all your fault!" he snarled, pushing me so hard my back hit the counter. "You're a fucking curse! If you weren't here, none of this shit would have happened!"

I didn't bat an eye. I'd heard worse.

His lip curled. "One of these days, I swear, I'll skin you alive."

Then, as if to prove his point, he slammed his fist into my shoulder before stalking off.

"Rip his fucking throat out!" Cornell murmured

"No, Cornell, calm down. No one needs to know I'm a warrior. The wound will heal."

"But what about ? How is this possible? Liam's our enemy, and now... he's your mate?"

"I don't know, Cornell. But even if he knew, he'd never accept me. I've already prepared myself for rejection."

Chapter One Hundred and Ninety-One: Almost HeardSophia's POVI stood in front of the mirror, gazing at my reflection. My eyes were tired, my complexion pale. Yet there was a gentleness to the way I pressed my hand against my stomach, the way my fingers lingered there. I could sense something within me… something new… something alive.I was pregnant with his child.I tried to smile, but the ache in my chest wouldn't allow it.I was happy, yes. But I was also afraid.I walked over to the chair and sat, folding my arms around my body. The house was silent. So silent. Nobody had been to my door since yesterday. Not Damon. Nobody. But I couldn't fault him. He had too much to deal with. Cara was everywhere. The elders. The whispers. The shame.Still… I had my right. I had my side of the story. I had my baby.I stood up again. Walked towards the door. Legs were shaking. But I move. I needed to have my say. I couldn't wait any longer.I took in a deep breath and stepped into the corridor. Th

Chapter One Hundred and Ninety: A Flicker of LightSophia's POVThe atmosphere in my room tonight was heavy, as if the mourning had crept into the walls like dust.I sat on the floor in front of the window, knees pulled in to my chest, eyes puffy and red from silently sniffling. I had given up trying to hold back the tears. I was alone now. No one to pretend for. No one to be strong for.The packhouse was empty. An eerily beautiful empty space that once held laughter and promises and kisses that went on into the night. Now it was as if all the hallways whispered secrets that taunted me.And the worst part—Damon didn't arrive. He hadn't turned up last night when I cried myself into bed. He hadn't turned up when I locked myself away and missed every single meal. He hadn't turned up even when the quietness was beginning to asphyxiate me.I rested a hand on my belly as a strange nausea rolled over me once more. My heart thudded with unease.I lurched towards the bathroom, making it only t

Chapter One Hundred and Eighty Nine - The Cruel VisitSophia's POVI sat on the bed, the room filled with silence. The echoes of the elders' words still resonated in my mind. I could still see Elder Myra staring at me—one of disappointment. A Luna with no child. A woman not enough. And I could still see Damon, torn between his duty and the chaos he helped, standing and watching me walk away but not attempting to hold me back. His silence was louder than the roar.My hands trembled in my lap as I gazed down at the ground, my thoughts a raging storm of anger. I had given everything to this pack. My loyalty. My strength. My body. My heart. I had made it through war, betrayal, torment. I had stayed faithful to Damon when even he did not deserve it.And now?And now I was pitied Luna. The one being covertly asked to step back. Not for another leader… but for a uterus. The door creaked open.I didn't have to look up. The scent told her in a moment. Sweet, with the subtle condescension that

.Chapter One Hundred and Eighty-Seven : The Broke Brothers' DiscussionDamon's POVThe evening descended dense over the pack house like a tempest waiting to break. Clouds rolled in above the sky, blanketing the previously golden air with a dim gray hue, reflecting the churn in my belly.I leaned over the edge of my office couch, knees supported by arms, head dipped. The quiet was oppressive. The house was too full — too full of tension, memory, watching eyes, waiting for me to take my next move. And yet it was empty. For Sophia wasn't there with me.I had seen the tears well up in her eyes when the elders had spoken.I'd seen the agony she fought to hide behind those steadfast shoulders. And I'd seen Cara standing there, shining like she was the Queen of Everything. Like she was the Luna, when in fact even I'd known — she couldn't be.The door creaked open inch by slow inch.Lucas entered. He didn't knock. He never did. We'd known each other too long. Fought together. Bled together.

.Chapter One Hundred and Eighty Five : The Gathering Sophia's POVThe morning sunlight streamed into the pack house like an intruder — warm, golden, and piercing beautiful. I was standing at the window, my hand on the curtains and the other clamped hard to my chest, trying to hold everything together that was falling apart.Last night had not been pleasant. Damon had tried to comfort me, saying the things I so wanted to hear — but his caress, though gentle, was detached. I knew his heart was being tugged in too many directions, and Cara… she was playing all the strings.I didn't blame the baby.I didn't blame Damon either. But Cara? She had known what she was doing. She had always known. And now, she was here in this house — under the same roof — breathing the same air, contaminating it with her presence.I moved away from the window and let out a sigh. The silence in the house was broken by rapid movement outside the door. Damon sneered at me—his eyes stormy, guilty, baffled—and for a sickening instant, I believed he'd choose me. That he'd stay. But he didn't.He left. And I was alone in the hallway, the echo of her shriek louder than my own heart pulses.I didn't get it. I couldn't.
